Clambering down the rope as quickly as he's able, Rogur hits the slippery roof and immediately steps out of the way in case that goliath decided to drop down next.
He pulls back his cloak and draws a short, slightly curved sword, aged but well cared-for. Turning in place to scan the skyline, he catches raised eyebrows from a commanding-looking Eladrin, who asks, "Well met, sir. Who are you and what were you doing up there? Are my companions safe?"
"Right," Rogur replies, "proper introductions later, but I'm Rogur, I'm thankful, and I'm pretty sure we're all under attack by those flying beasties. If you've got a sword, this would be an excellent time to draw."
"As to 'safe'," he continues, wiping rain from his eyes and shielding his face with his free hand, "that is very much an open question. I heard the elvish bloke up there give a shout, in any case."

Noticing that the drakes have calmed down a bit and the person they came to get out having made it safely out, Karu slings her axe across her back again and rappels down to the roof below.

"Alas, we have neither swords nor armor," Ariellana replies. "We had to check them at the gates of the city. The guards assured us this was a safe place and we were unlikely to need them." Ariellana snorts at this. "Ha! How did you manage to acquire weapons and armor? Are citizens allowed to have them, and only visitors are disadvantaged?"
Ariellana steadies the rope for Karu while keeping an eye on the drakes.

Rogur laughs and says, "No, like you, I had to pay a surety for my armor. I was glad enough to do it, having been in far too many 'safe places.'" You can practically hear the irony dripping over the rain.
"Small swords don't attract the eye of the town guards, though. They let me in without comment."

"I believe it would be wise to pay the surety for our armor and weapons." Myn says matter-of-factly. He then looks up at the tower, "After we resolve our current problem, perhaps."
"I think that myself or Tanglar might be able to unlatch the door without the drakes' interference, so long as we're careful. Should we attempt that?"

Acqua Alta Main Post #36
This is the thirty-sixth Acqua Alta main post. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Saturday, August 1st. The next main post will appear by 11 am, Monday, August 3rd.
Some of the ortalans begin to fly towards the cries that Akaysha causes to emanate from the west. As they do so, Tanglar reaches upwards with his hands and lets out an eery shriek repeatedly. The ortalans, both inside and outside, cease their own cries, and the ones in flight dive down towards the street below.
"The leader of a flock can compel obedience from time to time," Tanglar says by way of explanation, "but I doubt it will be enough to counter whatever training they've received, especially if their nests are there" he continues after hearing more of the situation.
"If we wish to enter through this way, we will either have to fight them, or lead them so far away that they cannot be aware of what's happening in their nests. Some will always stay behind as guards when it comes to a rookery." he concludes.

As this odd group makes its way down from the roof to the sodden ground, Rogur reflects briefly on luck and how much of it he'll need to find his flask.
Not much, as it turns out. The flask lies in the mud a few paces away. The silver leaf has torn slightly, revealing the underlying copper, but the crest of the Jewel of Imareska is thankfully undamaged.
His spirits lifting, he turns back to the group and says, "Well met, and you each have my thanks for your assistance. The--crag nesters, I believe you called them?--would probably have made short work of me if they had decided I looked tastier than their normal morning victuals.
"I am Rogur Kalor, former sailor from Imareska, and lately come to Beil to seek fortune, among other things. However, I'm somewhat short of fortune at the moment, so I'll thank you for your forgiveness that I don't immediately repay your kindness with a few rounds of ale at The Little Ortalan here in town. When I do, however, we can raise a glass and toast the coincidence of circumstance and tavern name."
He glances toward the tower and, for the first time, hesitates briefly. "While I'm much obliged to you all for retrieving me, it seems a bit unlikely that you went out of your way simply to haul a wayward sailor down from an ortalan rookery. I have business to conduct in that tower, and was wondering if our purposes might align further. I have some skill with a blade and crossbow, and would happily travel with you if you are making your way further in. Plus," he adds with a wink, "I've yet to meet a door that I couldn't persuade open with a little patience."
His grin broadens, and he addresses himself to the Eladrin woman whose bearing and demeanor mark her as a leader. "What say you? Room in your band for another wayward soul?"
07-31-2009, 07:48 PM
Ariellana smiles. She had been feeling at loose ends, alone for the first time in many years. And yet she is finding a new purpose, a new set of companions. It feels right. (She ironically considers that this may be a flaw in her, that she has developed the habit of not being alone and is too cowardly to change her habits.)
"I would be pleased to have your company, though I will reserve final judgment until we get to know each other better. Although our interests may align for now, we may find that they will diverge later. Or we may find ourselves squabbling over minor issues that make it difficult to travel together. We'll see. But no point in borrowing trouble! Welcome, both of you, to our little group."
She turns to Karu. "You had mentioned a task? While we are waiting to work the ritual, perhaps you could explain more?"
"Rogur, I do have a question, which you have so far avoided answering. Why were you stuck up there in that tower room in the first place? I find myself quite curious."
08-01-2009, 09:58 AM
Rogur grins sheepishly. "I've avoided answering because I have no good answer to give you. I've been in Beil for several days, meeting with little success in my search. As the saying goes, 'Time takes its toll on your silver and gold,' and soon I found myself with no leads and little money left to continue my search." He rubs his unshaven face ruefully.
"Then, just as I was about to give up hope, I saw a woman who seemed like she might be able to lead me to information I desperately need. She made her way to this tower, with me following at a discreet distance. I assume I made my way into the tower after her, but things are a bit fuzzy at this point. The last thing I remember is her voice saying something like 'Find my apprentice,' as if she was commanding a hunting beast."
He sighs and concludes, "And the next thing I know, I'm waking up with a lizard staring me in the face and you fine people making your way into the tower room."
He pauses for a moment, scanning each of the others' faces in turn. "Now, I don't know why you are attempting to make your way into that tower, but," here his face hardens, "it's very important to me to get in there and have some words with that woman. I believe our purposes align at least that far, yes?"
08-01-2009, 10:00 PM
Ariellana is intrigued by Rogur's tale.
"How very curious! I now find myself with more questions than before. So, yes, let's go find the lady you're seeking. I'm Ariellana, by the way.
"And if you don't mind and feel like you can tell us, someday I'd like to hear the entire tale. Including what you came to town to seek, the appearance of the woman, who the apprentice is, and everything. Perhaps our paths will align."
08-02-2009, 01:52 AM
"Tanglar, I came to find you and your friends because Hieromonk Krushevx has set me with a task. He suspects that the Matchless Gang will be attacking the Garden of Preparation. My task is to extract his daughter before the Gang attacks. Krushevx gave me a map of a tunnel that leads to the Garden, but he said the way might be dangerous as it hasn't been used in some time."
08-02-2009, 06:19 AM
Tanglar's thick brows furrow as he regards Karu. "I was planning to speak to the Hieromonk personally today, as it turns out. My sleep has been plagued with visions of white moths, an omen of death.
"That the Matchless Gang is going to attack the Garden does not seem like an unforeseen conclusion. Why should we not simply escort her off the premises directly, rather than slinking about in a tunnel?" he asks, "Also, if he was concerned over her welfare, for what reason is she still at the Garden?
"You aren't at the Garden. You could have brought her with you, could you not? Please don't be offended at my questions, but there is much about this situation I do not understand."
08-03-2009, 09:12 AM
Rogur nods politely to Ariellana and says, "It is a tale worthy of telling, m'dear, and I am happy to regale you with it when the time presents itself. In the meantime, I feel that I could do with a spot of breakfast, and it never hurts to keep an open ear before braving unknown territory." He glances significantly back at the tower, now shrouded in rain.
"What brought you to the tower? Is it common in these parts to ward a door such that you have to use magics to unbar the way?"
08-03-2009, 10:57 AM
"A most excellent question! We were here on other business. We were to be introduced to someone, but that person seems to be on the other side of the warded door. I have no idea what's going on, but for various reasons, it doesn't seem right to just walk away. So we will do what we can to help.
"Same with you, Karu. The Hieromonk impressed me last night with his acumen. And of course I'll help with his daughter. I can't guarantee that I'll want to help with fighting off the Matchless Gang, but we shall see. The more I'm hearing about that gang, the more it becomes apparent that something must be done. Though your fellow acolytes are excellent defenders, and I can't imagine we'd make much difference in that particular battle.
"Why is she in the Garden of Preparation? Where does the Hieromonk wish us to escort her after we find her? Is there anything else we should know to make this task easier for both us and her?"
08-03-2009, 11:49 AM
"And how old is the lovely lass?" Rogur chimes in.
