For the commons, i just have them in a box, usually devided by category in plastic bags. Now for my collectibles(defined as pro-painted), i have them separated individually and in a protective case. Yeah, i know, extremes.
Simple question right? Where do you store your miniatures when you are not using them?
I've got me a fancy house with a library and a garage area, but no perfect spot for the mini's. I can place some of the finest mini's that I have out in the library as they are display quality cool -- but I have many more than I can display (or would want to).
I'm looking for your solutions on lower cost ways to store miniatures without putting them so far out of reach that I can't get them easy on game day.

Good extremes though. I never thought of just throwing the plastics in a bag and writing "Orcs" on the side of it.

I use cheap Gladware containers. You can get stacks of them at Wal-Mart for little cash, they stack nicely and are durable. You can line them with felt material or a small wash cloth if you don't want them rattling around. Granted, all my miniatures are the "foldable cardstock" variety, but they take up almost as much space when constructed as plastic or metal minis.

Had a friend who owned a game store for a while about 10 years ago, he gave me some GW cases for helping him move his inventory. Bought another one recently, but if I was going to store long-term or non-mobile storage I'd use this (which I've posted elsewhere):
massive mini storage, holds approx 3000 minis

128 cell tray and #1948 tub, will fit three trays on a layer, looks like you can get 8-9 layers in it. Might have to trim the trays down a little for the lower layers.
A great place to buy miniature cases are from WFB stores. Usually, one can be found in every mall... at least out here on the left coast.
Addendum: I believe the stores i mentioned above are called Games Workshop, or something to that effect.

A couple of the shelves I make serve my purposes well. They keep the minis handy and on display.

I have a tackle bag that you place modular tackle boxes in. The bag comes with 8 boxes in it that stack one on top of the other and allow me to store all man-size and smaller size figures and some large size figures. For the bigger minis, huge and up, I've got a cardboard box that I keep them in for the moment.
I'll have to get a link to the bag when I get a chance and post it, but the bag is at home and I'm at work so I can't look it up because don't even remember what brand it is!
I really want to get some plastic storage boxes and use carpet/furniture foam for padding but haven't started making that system yet.
I've seen alot of players/DM's use tackle boxes. Seems to be the most popular in my experience.

I travel with my minis alot so a tackle box/bag has worked well for me. I have one that I bought at walmart a few months ago. It has plenty of space inside for 4 plastic separated cases, my 3 core books, and a box for my larger minis. It also has nice compartments on the side for notebooks, pens/pencils/markers, maps, and dice bags.
I used to use a duffel bag and this is so much better. It has a nice shoulder strap which helps because with everything in it it's quite heavy. If I ever bought one again, however, I might look for one with wheels.
GW miniature cases work great but can be pricey. The 'Army Transport' brand of cases also rock with foam that can be custom cut to fit your models. They're also a bit pricey. Gun cases can be cheap and work well.
