    (22 Weeks, 13 Sessions)
    Domo Onigato, Mr. Fiendato

In the previous session, the party went to see Celebrezrum give another enchanting concert in the great amphitheater of the main temple of Apollo in Apopolis on the evening of September 14, 3035. Celebrezrum made a joke about the Graikoí gods sleeping around that implied that Thór night be related to them. Celebrezrum got Thórsljón to do some aerial acrobatics, dubbed Yamirus the unofficial Volencian ambassador to Apopolis and introduced Luthia to the crowd as his daughter. Celebrezrum sang a song the party hadn’t heard before, about a secret meeting of good dragons in the year 2774, called the Convocation of Great Wyrms, where the golds advocated a war against evil dragons, but the silvers proposed negotiations. Mal chortled at a silver dragon singing about dragons in front of people who didn’t know he was a silver dragon.

In the following session, Malthengil cast celerity, then time stop, and then used his two standard actions per round and his Multipsell feat to cast 20 delayed blast fireballs, which is a bit of a pity really, as this is Farming Club.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKw2O...id=P-dMxee1pLc

Luthia insisted on going backstage to see her father after the concert. To the guards she said, “Good evening gentlemen, could you tell my father I’m here to see him?” She was so diplomatic (Diplomacy check 48) that one of them escorted her and the rest of the party to Celebrezrum immediately. Mal, meanwhile, musing on a time-travel spell he’d been coveting recently, said, “I would love to see the Convocation of Great Wyrms.” (Dominic, realizing that Pallas is still dead, as it’s the same day that the hoary hunter of Kaldrnáma killed him so that Hrothgar hasn’t had time to memorize a true resurrection yet, cracked about “Weekend at Bernie’s.”)

A priestess of Apollo greeted “Ambassador Yamirus” and offered him some wine. Yamirus said, “I’m happy to see you again,” and then quietly to Adelpha, “but not too happy,” so that she wouldn’t get jealous, at which Adelpha smiled. Mal asked when Adelpha was expected back home. Adelpha replied that midnight is her usual curfew, but that Grandpa Themis gives more latitude when Yamirus is in town, especially when they’re with his freakishly powerful allies.

Luthia gushed over her father. “I bought myself a lyre. I even wrote a song”, she said, and then proceeded to sing:

    Bravely bold Yamirus,
    Went forth from Vo-len-shuh!
He was not afraid to die,
    Oh brave Yamirus!
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in Castorian ways!
Brave, brave, brave, brave Yamirus! …

Yamirus rubbed his eyes. Celebrezrum, however, said to her, “You show promise. If you ever get out of the hacking up monsters business, I’d be happy to teach you a thing or two.”

“Speaking of ‘Brave Yamirus,’” Celebrezrum continued, turning to Yamirus, “I have something you might be interested to see.” Hrothgar and Thórsljón decided to stay with the priestesses of Apollo for another “interfaith exchange” while Celebrezrum lead Yamirus, Adelpha, Luthia and Mal to a beautiful set of frescoes along the western wall of the amphitheater. The first fresco showed a woman wearing a ring with a yellow gemstone shooting a yellow beam and killing a man wearing a ring with a green gemstone. In the next panel, the man’s gemstone stopped glowing, and a second man grabbed his ring and vanished. In the next fresco the second man appeared at the main temple of Apollo in Apopolis [where the party was looking at the frescoes] with the ring glowing very faintly. In later panels the second man mediated in the sun in an atrium of the temple for 7 days. On the 7th day, a titan with golden laurel crown reached from the heavens and touched the ring on the second man’s fingers, making the gemstone glow brighter.

Yamirus, seeing the first fresco, breathed deeply, sighed and said, “That’s Castor killing Cato.” Mal said, “Great workmanship.” (Mal said something about the ring of Cato that I can’t make out. Oh, could it be, “Drums, drums in the deep?” Oh, wrong illegible script. :-D It looks something like, “of the ring of Cato here.”) Yamirus replied excitedly, “I recognize this as my ancestor, Marcus Julius Brutus, and the ring of Cato.” Mal pointed to the titan and said, “And this is definitely Apollo.” Celebrezrum said to Yamirus, “I thought you might find this interesting,” and grinned. Adelpha said, “Mr. Celebrezrum, thank you for ‘the ambassador.’ It really raised Yamirus’ standing.” Yamirus thanked Celebrezrum too. Celebrezrum bowed his head briefly and said, “It’s the least I could do.” Yamirus, reflecting on the frescoes, said, “I should talk to the high priest about doing the ritual here at the temple, but I don’t have time now.” [Note: Dominic and I could do the ritual to enable the lesser powers of the ring of Cato while Brady’s gone, perhaps after the Kaldrnáma rematch, or even before. Dominic, let me know when you want to do the second ritual so that I can make up something.]

As Celebrezrum led Yamirus, Adelpha, Luthia and Mal back to Hrothgar and Thórsljón, Yamirus raved about Celebrezrum’s songs. As they returned and Hrothgar saw them he said to the priestesses, “Vell ladies, ve’d love to stay the evening but duty calls in the morning.”

As the party left the Temple of Apollo, Elvira found herself walking next to Hrothgar in the middle of the party. (At some point after the 8/31/2013 session I sat down and wrote the following conversation between Elvira and Hrothgar as something that would have happened between leaving the concert and meeting Onigato.) “Do you know what Celebrezrum meant about Thór’s father Ódinn having a visitor from the Graikoí Islands the night Ódinn fathered Thór?” she asked him. Hrothgar shrugged his shoulders. Elvira said, “Who is Thór’s mother?”

Hrothgar replied, “A goddess named Jörđr” (pronounced YER-ther, where the –th is soft as in “there”).

“Could she have come from the Graikoí Islands?” Elvira asked.

Hrothgar shrugged his shoulders again. “Suure. Ódinn sleeps vith many goddesses. And wymen. And giantesses. And…vell, thu get the idea.” (“Sure. Ódinn sleeps with many goddesses. And women. And giantesses. And…well, you get the idea.”)

Elvira smiled. What is Jörđr like?”

“Hmm…. Vell the stories don’t say much about her, other than giving some confusing genealogy. She’s supposed to be a giantess.”

“Does Jörđr’s name mean something in Northern Blóthfólk?” Elvira asked.

“Ja. It means the land below us,” he replied.

“Do the Graikoí have a goddess for the land below us?” Elvira asked.

Hrothgar thought a moment. “Vell the priestesses of Apollo invoke Apollo’s great-grandmother Gaia as a goddess of fertility. The Volencians call her Terra, the goddess of the land, but I don’t think they vyrship her much anymore, at least not in Maralig.”

“Could Gaia be the same goddess as Jörđr?”

Hrothgar considered for a moment. “Suure, I don’t see vhy not. She slept vith her brothers Ouranos and Tartarus, and her son Pontus, and her grandson Zeus, so vhy not vith Ódinn?”

Mal suggested that everyone should learn Fast Healing before the party goes to rescue Yamirus’ mother so that they won’t need to use up any healing magic outside of combat if they’re stuck in the Labyrinth for long and perhaps can’t recover spells.

Luthia had been humming quietly to herself since they’d left the amphitheater. As Hrothgar and Elvira grew quiet, she lifted up her voice and sang,

    Bravely bold Yamirus,
    Went forth from Vo-len-shuh!
He was not afraid to die,
    Oh brave Yamirus!
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in Castorian ways!
Brave, brave, brave, brave Yamirus! …

Just then Yamirus saw an old companion, Onigato, the Nintonese half-celestial monk, standing in the street ahead. Oni waved and did his little knee bend and prayer-hands combination in greeting. Yamirus noticed the presence of deeper darkness spells (Spellcraft check 90!) both up and down both a cross street the party was passing. Yamirus waved and pulled out his rod of metamagic, crying out, “Someone cast deeper darkness down the cross street! Incoming!!” Fake Oni, whom Yamirus immediately dubbed as “Foni,” charged Thórsljón (who was at the front the party) and sneered, “Tell Onigato that Ares says hello!”

A brief, nasty fight ensued. Thórsljón reacted first, enlarging himself, casting celerity on himself, drawing his +5 holy surge evil outsider bane sacred greathammer, and using his supernatural ability of daylight on it. From where Thórsljón was standing, the daylight revealed two of the three Oni Zens (Evil Onigato Monk 10 Zen Master10 Tattooed Monk10 ECL 34 hp 460 like Foni himself) hiding north on the cross street in the deeper darkness and two of three Oni Ragers (Evil Onigato Monk 10 Zen Master10 Tattooed Monk10 ECL 34 hp 460) hiding south on the cross street also in deeper darkness. With the bonus from charging, Foni barely managed to hit Thórsljón and didn’t do much damage. Mal hit the two northern Oni Zens with greater dispel magic, dispelling their divine favor, and then placed a quickened wall of force across the northern part of the cross street, cutting it off from the Apollian Way on which the party stood. He then cast a mirror image on himself—which proved fortuitous, because Oni Zen 1 flew over the wall of force and tried to stun Mal, but took out one of the mirror images instead. Oni Zen 2 also flew over the wall of force, attacking Caerwyn, who used an action point to successfully resist the Oni’s stunning fist. Oni Zen 3 joined Foni in attacking Thórsljón, but proved unable to hit Thórsljón’s mediocre armor class even once.

Yamirus used his vest of the archmagi to recast the mass celerity and greater teleport he’d used earlier in the day fighting the hoary hunter, and teleported himself and Adelpha back to the Apollian Way Inn. Elvira cast two forcecages, one each on the enlarged Oni Ragers 2 and 3. Luthia moved 10 feet closer to the Oni Ragers and breathed her paralyzing cone of gas breath weapon (her first use of paralyzing gas in the whole campaign) but all three Oni Ragers made their saving throws. She used her celerity action to ready a bite attack. Oni Rager 1 tried to tumble past her attack of opportunity, but rolled poorly (8 versus her counter-tumble roll of 32) but if I’m reading my notes correctly, she missed both the attack of opportunity and her readied action. Oni Rager 1 used his smite good ability on his first attack and scored a critical hit, doing a respectable but not impressive 50 points of damage. Luthia easily saved against his stunning fist. He hit her twice more but not for much damage.

Oni Ragers 2 and 3, trapped in Elvira’s forcecages, used spell-like abilities of unholy blight and blasphemy on nearby party members. Everyone saved against the unholy blight and took only 7 points of damage. The blasphemy had no effect on anyone except Luthia, who became weakened. Caerwyn took a 5-foot step back toward Luthia, and used Blinding Speed to shoot arrows at one of the Oni Zens, but failed to hit.

Hrothgar took a 5-foot step next to Mal, pulled out his rod of maximize spell, raged, and spontaneously cast the sanctified spell hammer of righteousness, using the rod to maximize it, and hitting Oni Zen 1 for 256 points of damage. Hrothgar used his celerity action to rinse and repeat on Foni. (I later ruled that as a 3rd-level spell, even a spell with a sacrifice component, hammer of righteousness should have a dice limit of 15.) Njord turned into werebear form, raged, and dire-charged Oni Rager 1, hitting him for 138 points of damage (even after subtracting the Oni’s damage reduction). As the first round ended, Adelpha, now safe at home, thanked Yamirus for rescuing her.

At the start of the second round Thórsljón cast earth hammer, and used a feat of Strength and Hyper Rage. He smacked Foni, previously wounded by Hrothgar’s hammer of righteousness, for 165 points of damage on a critical hit, killing him and cleaving through to Oni Zen 1, also previously wounded by Hrothgar’s hammer of righteousness, for 166 points of damage on a second critical hit, killing him too and cleaving through to Oni Zen 2, who he hit three times, including another critical hit, for 135, 139 and 318 points of damage, killing him three. Thórsljón then took a 5-foot step to bring him within range of Oni Zen 3.

Mal too stepped closer to Oni Zen 3 and cast a maximized greater shout, but since Oni Zen 3 had mettle his successful save avoided damage altogether. (I messed up here, as it’s the Oni Ragers and not the Oni Zens that have mettle, so Oni Zen 3 should have taken half damage, which I believe was 60). Mal then cast forcecage on the defense, trapping Oni Zen 3. Concerned about public opinion in Apopolis turning against the party if people perceived the party as engaging in butchery (and either consciously or unconsciously emulating his father, Arandor), Mal said, “This is your opportunity to wait for the authorities.” Oni Zen 3 responded by casting horrid wilting on Mal for 80 points of damage, and then vanishing. Mal called out, “He just shadow walked into the Plane of Shadow!”

Meanwhile, back at the Apollian Way Inn, Yamirus gave Adelpha a quick kiss on the cheek and said, “You’ll be safe here…baddies to fight,” and once more used the vest of the archmagi to recast greater teleport and transport himself back to the spot from which he originally teleported to the Apollian Way Inn. Seeing his draconic companion and familiar, Luthia, threatened by Oni Rager 1, Yamirus cast a maximized energy drain (out of a 13th-level slot!) at him, but having mettle, Oni Rager 1 took no damage on his successful save.

Elvira caste a haste on all the close party members—Caerwyn, Hrothgar, Luthia, Njord and herself—moved 60 feet, and cast a maximized split ray coherent light at one of the caged Oni Ragers, scoring one regular hit and one critical hit, doing a total of 386 points of damage.

Luthia cast wraith strike, then using Power Attack for 10 points messed up Oni Rager 1 for a total of 201 points of damage—even after subtracting damage reduction! Oni Rager 1 responded by tumbling away (Tumble score 51 versus Luthia’s counter-tumble score of 39), flying over the nearest building, and fleeing south down the cross street past the deeper darkness.

Oni Ragers 2 and 3, still trapped in Elvira’s forcecages, each hit Caerwyn, Hrothgar, Mal and Thórsljón with a horrid wilting. Everyone took 95 points of damage except for Thórsljón, whose mettle ability allowed him to avoid damage entirely. Caerwyn managed to spot the fleeing Oni Rager 1, and hit him with one arrow from his +5 evil outsider bane holy prismatic burst sacred burst slow burst variable strength mighty composite longbow. Caerwyn scored a critical hit, and Oni Rager 1 managed to dodge the prismatic burst and ignore the slow burst, but still took 99 points of damage.

Mal was looking horribly wilted after taking damage from three horrid wilting spells, so Hrothgar cast a mass heal on Mal and himself (and I think Caerwyn, although if so I forgot to write it down), and then cast a lion’s roar (which I think Oni Ragers 2 and 3 avoided because of their mettle ability) which gave everyone in range 25 temporary hit points as well. Njord, with no targets he could currently reach, moved up to the closest forcecage (containing Oni Rager 2) and said, “Who’s the zoo exhibit now?”

At the start of the third round, Thórsljón dire-charged the fleeing Oni Rager 1 and splattered him across two rooftops and the cross street between them, just as he spotted (Spot roll 65) two enlarged Oni Singhs (Onigato Monk10 Singh Rager19 Sohei1 ECL 34 hp 787) hiding in the rooftops’ shadows. “Thar’s two more out here!” he bellowed to the rest of the party before tumbling right up next to Oni Singh 1 (Tumble roll of 62 beat the Oni Singh’s counter-tumble roll of 55). Back on the Apollian Way (the way, not the inn J), Mal heard Thórsljón and cast a maximized time stop. During the five round of the time stop Mal flew about 450 feet to within 10 feet of Thórsljón, and cast greater blinking, two spheres of ultimate destruction and a Bigby’s crushing hand, all three of which he placed right next to Oni Singh 1. Yamirus moved 50 feet, cast a fly spell on himself, and then flew 80 feet “forward” (by which I think I meant “toward Thórsljón”). Elvira also cast a fly, flew over the same building over which Oni Rager 1 had flown, and then toward Thórsljón as well. To put Thórsljón between himself and Mal’s spheres and hand, Oni Singh 1 tumbled over Thórsljón, who won the opposed Tumble check and took his attack of opportunity for 108 points of damage. Oni Singh 1 managed to do 81 points in return.

Back on the Apollian Way, Luthia cast blood wind, moved 15 feet, and then took a full attack action against Oni Rager 2, still trapped and using damaging spell-like abilities from within one of Elvira’s forcecages, hitting all 7 times for a total of 92 (after DR). Oni Rager 2 hit Luthia and Njord with an unholy blight, but managed to inflict only 10 points of damage to each. Oni Rager 3 hit Luthia with a destruction spell, but fortunately she made her saving throw and didn’t die. Caerwyn responded by firing 5 cold iron arrows at Oni Rager 2 through the bars of the forcecage, hitting him all 5 times for a total of 177 points (after DR). Hrothgar moved 70 feet toward Thórsljón and cast chant the holy name spell (from Anger of Angels, granting a +2 sacred bonus on AC, saves and checks). Njord remained outside Elvira’s forcecages, readying an attack.

Back over the rooftops down the cross street, Oni Singh 2 pounced for a full attack action on Thórsljón using Hyper Fury and frenzy. Singh 2 initially scored a threat of a critical hit on his first attack, but Mal was in range to use alter fortune make Singh 2 reroll the attack and reduce it to what became one of five successful but non-critical hits. Singh 2 still managed to inflict an impressive 259 points of damage on Thórsljón, even after his damage reduction—by far the best performance of any evil Oni during the encounter.

At the top of round 4, Thórsljón, despite having taken a pounding from Oni Singh 2, concentrated attacks on Oni Sigh 1, whom he’s already wounded for 108 points of damage. Thórsljón used another feat of Strength and Power Attack 10 combined with a full attack action, inflicting a total of 749 and killing Oni Singh 1. (I’m not sure why he didn’t then cleave through to Oni Singh 2.) Mal moved both spheres of ultimate destruction to attack Oni Singh 2, hitting with both spheres, but thanks to mettle Oni Singh 2 took no damage. (I messed up here again, as the Oni Singhs didn’t have enough levels of sohei to get mettle.) Mal also moved the Bigby’s crushing hand to attack Oni Singh 2, but missed. Mal then cast a prismatic spray, getting a blue ray, against which Oni Singh 2 saved, then cast an automatically quickened slow against which Oni Singh 2 saved too, and finally cast an automatically quickened unluck, against which Oni Singh 2 saved yet again.

Back on the Apollian Way, Oni Zen 3, who had used shadow walk to escape from Mal’s forcecage, came flying back and attacked Luthia. He tumbled past her reach but then missed all four attacks. She looked down at Oni Zen 3 punching her thick hide uselessly and snorted in derision. Yamirus flew back in the direction of Luthia and cast a maximized coherent light at Oni Zen 3, causing 150 points of damage. Then he cast a fortified split ray coherent light, but missed with both rays. Elvira followed suit, casting an empowered maximized split ray coherent light, using a special action point for +7 on one attack and her moment of prescience for +25 on the other, hitting for 546 points of damage. (I’m not quite clear if she targeted the returned Oni Zen 3, one of the Oni Ragers trapped in a forcecage, or Oni Singh 2 fighting Thórsljón.) Luthia cast wraithstrike as a swift action, then cast true strike, and managed to hit Oni Zen 3 with 6 attacks, including a critical hit, for a total of 149 points (after SR). The two caged Oni Ragers started casting summon monster IX to summon something that could remove a forcecage or teleport them out. Caerwyn moved 50’ with his celerity action, and then took a full attack, managing to hit him (one of the Onis) twice. Hrothgar continued chanting the holy name with his celerity action, and took a swing at Oni Zen 1, but missed. Njord also attacked Oni Zen 1, but managed to hit only once and not for much damage.

For the top of the fifth round, I have written that Thórsljón charged Oni Zen 3 and killed him. Yamirus pulled out a rod of empowerment and used it in casting a (twice?) fortified coherent light hitting Oni Rager 2 in the forcecage and making him lose his summon monster IX, as well as inflicting 135 points of damage. Elvira followed suit again and cast an empowered maximized split ray coherent light at Oni Rager 3, making him lose his summon monster IX too and inflicting 191 points of damage.

On the sixth round Thórsljón killed Oni Singh 2 (or possibly 3). Elvira killed the last Oni Rager with a maximized split ray coherent light that did an impressive 400 points of damage, and as quickly has it had started, the encounter ended.

Will the party have any time to loot the Oni bodies before the Apopolian authorities arrive? What will the party do with all the information gleaned from Celebrezrum’s performance? Will the party get to meet with Adam, the King’s Sage? If so, will Adam know more about the hoary hunter than Arandor, Celebrezrum and Salvaran? Tune in this week and find out! J

CR 33 x 10 (All using Oni’s stats, half-celestial ability score adjustments but half-fiend supernatural and spell-like abilities): Foni + 3 Oni Zens (Evil Onigato Monk 10 Zen Master10 Tattooed Monk10 ECL 34 hp 460); 3 Oni Ragers (Evil Onigato Monk9 Singh Rager10 Sohei11 ECL 34 hp 610); 3 Oni Singhs (Onigato Monk10 Singh Rager19 Sohei1 ECL 34 hp 787). [I think I really had only 2 Oni Singhs but accidentally gave an Oni Zen the greater hit points of the Oni Singh, so I tossed in another Oni Singh for what was a difficult and complicated combat.]

33rd: Elvira, Hrothgar, Pallas (dead): 14,142
    34th: Malthengil, Thórsljón, Yamirus: 9,714
    (35th: Njord)
    (36th Caerwyn)
    Individual

[I went ahead and removed Caerwyn and Njord. We’re still running Njord and Caerwyn, and I’ve leveled them up to 35th and 36th so that they can help replace Mal, who likely won’t return in time for the rematch with Kaldrnáma, and possibly not for the Great Bridge either.]

[I dropped the per-session experience points for the PCs, at least for now. Originally I started doing per-session experience for party NPCs (Elvira, Hrothgar and Thórsljón) because they didn’t have much opportunity for roleplaying experience while the PCs were getting most of their experience form roleplaying. Then I started giving Caerwyn per-session experience too because Marc was too shy to do much roleplaying, especially over the phone, and Caerwyn, who started out weak compared to most of the rest of the party, started getting even weaker relative to the rest of the party as he lagged behind in levels.

[Later I started giving all the PCs the per-session experience because we so often talk through most of the sessions and I still wanted players to feel a sense of advancement just for showing up. I started giving the party NPCs experience for each week, while PCs got experience only for sessions their players attended, giving a little bit of a needed boost to the NPCs (and Caerwyn who virtually never missed a session) who were starting to lag behind again. For the current Update and Experience, however, the party has gotten a large combat experience award, as well as some decent roleplaying experience, and as the PCs reach the mid-30s in level, it takes me more and more time to set up appropriate encounters. I don’t want simply to use every critter in the Epic Level Handbook, whether its presence makes sense or not (and even they need additions because of my house rules, in particular the feat rule), which means a lot more of opponents with class levels, which get more complicated as they rise in level. While Thórsljón has faired well in experience because of the various analyses for which I’ve given him experience, furthermore, Elvira and Hrothgar have lagged behind, and I inadvertently had the Onigato build-testing encounter take place while Pallas was dead so that Pallas ended up missing out on about 10,000 in experience. So I dropped the per-session experience for the PCs, kept it for Thórsljón, and kept the per-week experience for Elvira, Hrothgar and Pallas, as a result of which Thórsljón should be about even with Yamirus and Mal, Pallas shouldn’t be too far behind them, and Elvira and Hrothgar, who were maybe a level and a third behind, should have caught up to maybe two-thirds of a level behind.]

I’m Alive! (For a Round Anyway)

First I’d like to welcome Brady back from his [classified] service to America in [classified] for [classified] months. Welcome back, Brady! We certainly missed you!

In the last Update, a group of half-fiend monks of the Spears of Ares ambushed the party shortly after midnight on September 15, 3035 on the way back from the party seeing Celebrezrum give another enchanting concert in the great amphitheater of the main temple of Apollo in Apopolis on the previous evening. In less than a minute the party mopped up the Fonis, as Yamirus labeled them when the first one appeared in the guise of the party’s friend Onigato, a half-celestial monk of the Hidden Fists of Athena, whom party members often called “Oni” for short.

The party managed to loot the Foni bodies in literally less than two minutes, before the Apopolian authorities arrive. Caerwyn and Mal, in fact, ran off from the intersection of the battle in different directions hoping to flag down patrols of the City Watch, which both of them did, in order to make clear that the Fonis had instigated the fight. At one point Luthia, elated by being able to use her bloodwind to strike the Fonis in the forcecages who were attacking the party with spell-like abilities (and by getting the Fonis’ treasure) pulled a cloak off of one of them with her mouth. “Look, Yamirus!” she exclaimed, “I’ve got cloak-in-mouth disease!” Then as she pulled the cloak on the ground she exclaimed, “Look, Yamirus! I’m dragon this cloak!”

Yamirus had no trouble dealing with the City Watch after explaining what happened, especially after Councilor Themis showed up with Adelpha to corroborate the party’s story. Yamirus made some small talk with Themis and Adelpha, and later Chief Investigator Krelos interviewed the party members for his report. Hrothgar bragged about someone or other in the fight, managing to make the party look more aggressive than it really had been.

The party rested and regained spells, and Hrothgar cast a true resurrection on Pallas. Mal then teleported everyone to outside the Royal Library in Traimus. The guards pulled their swords at the party’s sudden appearance, but the other members stayed back from the entrance while Mal explained he’d come to visit Adam. The guards didn’t recognize Mal’s name (he’s a professor emeritus at the Imperial University of Magic). Mal went in to wait in hopes of getting an audience with Adam, dismissing the party and directing them to nearby pub that caters to the library crowd as a bit of a joke since the party’s not exactly the type that hangs out there.

As Caerwyn led the way, he, Hrothgar, Luthia, Thórsljón and Yamirus all spotted the outline of an invisible scrying sensor hovering over Caerwyn. It’s actually a second sensor, since the Sisiutl has been scrying on the party since it observed them retaliate against the Spathi weeks earlier. Party members who spotted the sensor were able to respond a few seconds later when a 28-foot-tall silver giant with a huge greatsword appeared right next to Yamirus and unleashed the greatsword, which attacked Yamirus on its own! Thórsljón used his persistent intercession spell to intercede and take the blow himself, putting him in range to attack the silver giant with his readied action. Yamirus cast the energy drain he’d memorizing in anticipation of fighting a wizard, but it had no effect. Caerwyn hit it with a readied arrow, which did minimal damage to the giant’s somewhat fluid metallic substance. Luthia changed to dragon form and flew behind the silver giant. Hrothgar spontaneously cast a warhammer of righteousness spell, which also had no effect on the silver giant.

Pallas finally reacted, quick-drawing both gladii and slicing the silver giant 10 times. The gladii didn’t seem to do as much damage against its somewhat fluid substance as they would have against flesh, but did manage to do some damage (126 points). Thórsljón raged and thumped the silver giant for 230 points of damage, his bludgeoning weapon seriously flattening the giant’s substance. Njord quick-shifted into bear form and took a full attack action against it, doing some damage (68) but getting a mouth full of mercury that, thanks to his hearty constitution, didn’t sicken him. The damage did reduce the giant to huge-sized pile of almost-liquid metal. Yamirus took a 5-foot step back, cast celerity on the defensive, and then cast a time stop on the defensive. In the time stop he buffed up and then flew up 90 feet.

The silver giant suddenly reformed as though the party hadn’t damaged it at all. With the silver giant unable to spot Yamirus, it turned to the only other Volencian present, Pallas. First its dancing greatsword hit him six times, and then it sliced and diced with its own appendages, which turned razor sharp. Pallas couldn’t parry any of its attacks, and he went down, wounded almost to death. The silver giant had a few attacks left over which it landed on Thórsljón, who had done the most damage to it. Luthia breathed on the silver giant, and party members noticed that it started to freeze. Luthia called out to hit it with cold. Elvira cast celerity on the defensive, tumbled back away from the silver giant, and then hit it with a split ray twinned polar ray (in an 8th-level slot) and hit it with all four rays for a total of 351 points of damage, freezing it in place. Hrothgar cast an amplified mass heal spell on Pallas, returning Pallas to full hit points. Pallas grabbed his gladii (and I have written that he took an attack of opportunity from the silver giant, but since it was frozen, that can’t be right) and kipped up, exclaiming, “I’m alright!” and slashing the frozen giant with a gladius, hoping to shatter the giant, but only knocking off a chunk of silver ice. Thórsljón used power attack and hit the frozen giant four times, reducing it to a pile of silver ice.

Yamirus, meanwhile, was thinking furiously, trying to pull together scraps of information he’d heard and read over his life. He decided that the huge, the silver giant resembled a mercury golem, and realized that acid would probably do permanent damage to it. He called out, “Hit it with acid,” and “watch out, it’s vorpal” (although it really has the old sharpness ability which isn’t as good as the vorpal ability, but Yamirus thought that party wouldn’t recognize the sharpness ability). Then he cast a greater dispel magic spell on the huge dancing sword (using action points to increase his roll by 13 points) and the sword dropped to the ground, its magic suppressed by the spell (for one round). Elvira hit the mercury sentinel, as it’s called, with two acid-affinity twice-maximized split ray scorching ray spells. Originally I’d rolled critical hits for her, but as a construct the mercury sentinel is immune to critical hits, but I also did inferior acid-affinity twice-maximized twice-strengthened scorching ray spells, so when I redid them as acid-affinity twice-maximized split ray scorching ray spells they did enough damage without the critical hits, 384 points, to destroy the mercury sentinel. Thórsljón picked up the huge greatsword, but since the party had destroyed its user, it did not, upon becoming magical again after one round of suppression by Yamirus’ greater dispel magic, attack him.

After the battle the party stopped to identify the magic items that it had looted from the Fonis (and although we forgot to do it, I’m adding the mercury sentinel’s +6 huge dancing greatsword to the items Yamirus identified). Most of the party’s treasure the party will probably sell, but I think both Luthia and Hrothgar (and possibly Elvira) have their eye on one of the lesser rods of persistent spell. J

The party gleaned a great deal of information from Celebrezrum’s performance, but has the Foni ambush put it all out of their heads? As Mal went to meet with Adam, the King’s Sage, as he father Arandor had indirectly suggested the day before, Mal could no longer even remember what he’d wanted to ask. Will he remember, and if so, will Adam know more about the hoary hunter than Arandor, Celebrezrum and Salvaran? Will the party distribute and sell the great treasure it looted from the Fonis? Will it be able to sell the +6 dancing greatsword it took from the mercury sentinel? Tune in this week and find out! J

We don't play quite as regularly as we used to, but we still do play. We'd start a new character around 34th level now.
