Having defeated the ghost ship, Marvos Drakon o and its crew of undead, the party decided to follow Luthia's suggestion that the party dive in search of treasure. Thalassa, revealing her good instincts as a mother, suggested the party get spelled up with swim and water breathing spells before diving. Yamirus wholeheartedly agreed. Lindir volunteered to stay with the Spathi crew and guard them, suggesting that if the party actually found any treasure they could use Yamirus's message spell to call for his help. That way they could spare the spells Thalassa would otherwise need to cast on him. Even without casting a swim spell and a water breathing spell on Lindir, Thalassa cast five spells on the party to prepare them for the dive.

Spelled up, the party swam out from the
Delfini's beach. Thórsljón led the way, followed by Hrothgar, Yamirus, Caerwyn, and Elvira, with the heavily-armored Luthia in her natural dragon form guarding the rear. They followed the bottom outward into the lagoon as the bottom gently sloped downward. Hrothgar, the only human in the party, exclaimed, "By Thór's beard, I can't see down har!" Thórsljón replied, "Vould thu like me to make daylight?" Yamirus agreed with the idea. "On whom?" asked Thórsljón. Yamirus suggested that since Thórsljón could best survive attacks, he should put the daylight on himself to attract any attacks they might face. Thórsljón replied excitedly, "Ja! I vil draw the attacks!" and lit himself up with daylight.

In the area where the scyllan had attacked
Thórsljón, the daylight revealed a round hole, about 60 feet in diameter, forming an almost perfect circle in the lagoon's floor. Yamirus noted that it looked too perfect to be natural. Caerwyn, however, said that it looked like a lava tube. Yamirus said through his message spell, "It's not going to erupt and spew out lava, is it?" Caerwyn pointed out that since Mt. Aetna, had recently erupted and hadn't sent any lava through the tube, it seemed unlikely. Thórsljón noted that the scyllan, an evil outsider, does not have the fire subtype so it probably wouldn't lair in an active lava tube. Yamirus joked, "If I were a sea monster this is would I'd make a nest."

The party descended at a rate of 40 feet (Luthia's swim speed with the
swim spell) into the lava tube. They could see in the daylight that undersea plant life had grown inside the tube to some degree, so that the tube obviously hadn't carried lava from the latest eruptions of Mt. Aetna. The party descended 200 feet before the tube forked, with one fork heading north and the other south. In the daylightThórsljón could see that the southern fork turned west within 30 feet. Yamirus suggested they look around the bend in the southern tube first. Thórsljón, using his armor's freedom of movement ability, flew around the bend.

Suddenly two long tentacles swept out of the darkness, slamming Thórsljón and grabbing him. A monstrous creatures waited in the black water, its upper body a mass of lashing tentacles surrounding two fearsome claws. A toothy maw gaped in its fishlike head. It had wings that were wide and sleek. Its scales gleamed like liquid metal, catching the reflection of Thórsljón's daylight. Strong as he is, Thórsljón failed to break the hold of the tentacled creature. Having grabbed Thórsljón in a tentacle, the gleaming monstrosity transferred him to a claw where it began to constrict him. The party had forgotten to heal the minor damage that Thórsljón took from the undead of the ghost ship, and now that the gleaming monster has done four times as much damage, Thórsljón has already taken more than a third of what he can survive! Worse yet, as the session ended, the monster rolled an initiative score of 30--the first time in our six years that anyone has rolled so high--beating even the fastest party members.

Can Thórsljón survive a full round against the horrible, gleaming monster? Will the party find treasure, or will its dive have been for naught? Tune in next week and find out. Same Thór
    time, same Thórstation! :-D

Some truely nasty opponents. Then when most of the party is level 20 or higher, they can't be expected to be fighting ordinary foes.

I advanced the effigy from CR 17 to CR 20, but I really should have advanced it into epic levels, maybe 22nd or 23rd, or even 24th, the level of the highest-level character. I probably should have advanced the ragewind from CR 19 to maybe CR 21 or CR 22. Thórsljón took out that ragewind in one or two rounds with no problem. The ragewind managed to seriously harm only the lowest-level (13th level) NPC.

Still, I have to say that the incorporeality of all the undead (except for the ragewind) gave the party fits and starts, and the mere threat of the undead draining ability scores or inflicting negative levels scared the bejezzus out of the players, which is half the excitement for them.

It also helped that the effigy managed to inflict two negative levels on Yamirus. If Yamirus had missed his Will save like he missed his Fort save (much less likely for a wizard) the effigy would have infused itself into him. The holy aura that Thórsljón had put on Yamirus would have prevented the effigy from controlling Yamirus, but the effigy would still have automatically inflicted two negative levels per round with no saving throw. The effigy would also have inflicted 2d6 points of fire damage, but Yamirus had a protection from energy spell enabled by a contingency spell, so the effigy would have killed Yamirus by inflicting 24 negative levels long before it inflicted enough fire damage to overcome the protection from energy.

In the last update the party, having defeated the ghost ship Marvos Drakon o and its crew of undead, decided to follow Luthia's suggestion that the party dive in search of treasure. In the part of the lagoon of the Isle of Aetna where a scyllan had attacked Thórsljón, his daylight revealed a lava tube, about 60 feet in diameter, in the lagoon's floor. The party descended into the tube about 200 feet before it forked, with one fork heading north and the other south. Hrothgar stopped the party to cast a bear's endurance on Thórsljón, since Hrothgar's mass bear's endurance had expired. Hrothgar also has a fortunate fate on Thórsljón, figuring that if anyone would take massive damage and need an immediate heal spell to avoid death, it would be Thórsljón.

    In the
daylight Thórsljón could see that the southern fork turned west within 30 feet. The party had forgotten to heal the minor damage that Thórsljón took from the undead of the ghost ship, and after the gleaming monster did four times as much damage, Thórsljón had already taken more than a third of what he can survive! Worse yet, as the session ended, the monster rolled an initiative score of 30--the first time in our six years that anyone has rolled so high--beating even the fastest party members.

In the sessions that followed, the gleaming monstrosity, a gargantuan chromium half-dragon (fully-advanced) scyllan continued constricting Thórsljón and beat him with multiple tentacles and another claw, nearly killing him before he could even react. Caerwyn recognized the monstrosity as a scyllan, based on the merely huge scyllan the party had fought at the surface of the lagoon, and told Yamirus through Yamirus' message spell. Yamirus relayed the knowledge to the rest of the party. Luthia warned Yamirus that a chromium dragon has immunity to cold, and Yamirus again used the message spell to tell the rest of the party. Yamirus exclaimed, "By Jupiter's bolt, it looks like it has fast healing!"

Caerwyn opened with a volley of arrows that all found their mark. He whispered through the
message spell that the monster had fast healing when he saw the damage start to heal immediately. Elvira reacted by casting a celerity spell on herself and then hitting the monster with a maximized disintegrate spell. Yamirus too cast a celerity and then hit the monster with a polar ray. Luthia tried to move forward, but the monster lashed out with a tentacle and grabbed her, transferring her to a claw and constricting her too. Although Yamirus worried for her, her occupation of a claw and absorption of its constriction damage, along with the bear's endurance Hrothgar had cast on Thórsljón, probably saved Thórsljón's life. Hrothgar moved forward to cast a mass heal and a mass cure serious wounds, preventing Thórsljón from dying. Thórsljón flew into a rage and used his feat of strength as a cleric of Thór, but could not burst forth from the monster's grip.

    The monster grabbed
Caerwyn, and in its tentacle he was powerless. The monster also grabbed Hrothgar, rendering him too powerless. Elvira, still invisible from the fight with the Marvos Drakon o and its crew of undead, bravely teleported right next to Hrothgar (and the creature), touched Hrothgar, and teleported the two of them back out of range of the monster's tentacles, after using the message spell to have Yamirus use the message spell to tell Hrothgar not to struggle, so that she would have a better chance of touching him. The creature swallowed Caerwyn, and started digesting him, although he pulled out the +5 deadly precision cutlass he'd gotten from Captain Andreas of the Spathi, and proceeded to cut his way out--which he did just in time to avoid death by digestion!

(I have here a note about Yamirus and a maximized split ray
disintegrate, but I wonder if maybe Elvira cast it?) Yamirus summoned a water monolith right next to the monster, and the monolith started pounding the stuffing out of it. The monster made a terrifying noise that weakened Elvira with fear, but which all the others (including the monolith) resisted, and then tried to slow the monolith with a control water, but the monolith resisted that too. Thórsljón, unable to break out of the monster's grasp, remembered that he was wearing a pair of masterwork gauntlets, and started pounding the monster with his fists, doing a surprising amount of damage through the monster's damage reduction despite not being able to use his +5 holy great hammer. Elvira cast a celerity on Hrothgar, who cast an assay spell resistance and then a righteous smite, which did enough damage to the monster to knock it unconscious. Thórsljón, free from its mighty tentacle, took out his frustration at not being able to break free by performing a coup de grace with his +5 holy great hammer, sending its brain matter spewing forth in a great dark cloud that filled the lava tube.

Yamirus suggested that the party move further along the lava tube in hopes of finding the monster's lair. Luthia, however, insisted on searching the monster first, and found a
pale green prism ioun stone that she had spotted orbiting its head up toward the top of the lava tube. Then the party went further into the tube. They went another 100 feet or so and found the tube blocked by a cave in--and the floor littered with small objects that glittered and sparkled in Thórsljón's daylight. Yamirus said, "Caerwyn, use your keen Delnon eyes to see if it's treasure or certain death." Caerwyn saw the floor of the tube littered with coins, gems and jewels. As they began to collect the treasure, they heard a terrifying noise, similar to the one the chromium half-dragon scyllan had made, coming from the darkness in the direction from which the party had come.

Before the party could react, another gargantuan scyllan, this one not a half-dragon, shot up to them out of the dark and struck
Thórsljón, who was standing behind the party guarding them as they grabbed treasure, a mighty blow. This time he managed to just barely free himself, as the chrome scyllan's mate wasn't quite as strong as it had been. He smote it four mighty blows with his +5 holy great hammer. Elvira cast a celerity on herself and then hit the scyllan with an empowered polar ray. It shot away into the darkness. Elvira, who could see the scyllan in the dark with her 120-foot darkvision, hit it with a glitterdust spell, but without any light to reflect off the glitter, the spell did not reveal the scyllan's location to those would couldn't see it in the dark. She also tried to hit the scyllan with a split ray disintegrate, but neither ray overcame its spell resistance.

Thórsljón followed the scyllan, tumbling through the water with his freedom of movement spell like an acrobat, but the scyllan managed to strike him anyway, and this time he couldn't stay out of its grasp. His daylight spell, however, lit it. Caerwyn fired a volley of arrows, but at the great distance the current swept them far away. Yamirus, however, hit it with apolar ray, almost as powerful as Elvira's even without empowering it. The polar ray did enough damage to knock the scyllan unconscious, and Thórsljón, freed from a tentacle once again, gave this scyllan too a coup de grace with his +5 holy great hammer.

After the fight with the second gargantuan scyllan, Yamirus made sure to get everyone healed up. Only
Thórsljón had taken damage, and Hrothgar healed him completely with a cure critical wounds and a cure moderate wounds. The party gathered the treasure, and Luthia once again found a pale green prison ioun stone, which had been orbiting the scyllan and which everyone had seen in Thórsljón's daylight.

Yamirus wanted to return to the surface, but Luthia reminded him that the lava tube split off, and suggested that the other branch might lead to yet more treasure. He agreed, and they swam back and into the other branch of the tube. It led them out to the sea, where the roof of the tube had collapsed leaving the bottom half as a long trench that ran a thousand feet along the sloping seabed. The party followed the trench, spotting a few wrecks, mostly fishing boats, along the way. Yamirus suggested checking out one of them, and the party found it empty of both humans and valuables. Luthia spotted marks made by the anchor chain along its hull, and Yamirus deduced that one of the scyllans has probably pulled the boat under. Yamirus felt sick when he realized that the scyllans had probably eaten the boat's humans.

After exploring the one wreck, the party continued to follow the trench. As they got closer to what turned out to be its end, they started to see statues, mostly of Graiko
í men, in strange posses, and as he and Luthia examined the statues carefully, Yamirus speculated that the statues had started out as men whom some creature or spellcaster had turned to stone.

As the party moved forward, they could hear a chorus of beautiful, unearthly singing, and could see that the trench ended
in a rock face that rose about 100 feet from the trench floor. In the rock face, aligned with the trench, they saw a faintly shimmering circle, 60 feet in diameter. Before the shimmering circle floated a gargantuan creature, a twenty-one-headed serpent, the unearthly music coming from its serpentine mouths. A fierce human-like face with large, closed eyes sang too, from where the serpent heads joined its body. A blue glow emanated from the impossibly deep eyes in its serpentine heads, its body wreathed in both red and violet flames despite being underwater.

As the serpent heads continued to sing, the mouth in the human-like face said, "Greetings, mighty adventurers, you have come far through much to get here. What brings you here?"

Yamirus explained why they'd come, seeking to free his mother, but the creature asked why they'd come before it. Yamirus replied that they were exploring the lava tube. Luthia said, "That's a sisiutl, but I've never heard of one before with more than two heads!" to which it replied, "I am
The Sisiutl, the original, and all the others descend from me." Yamirus asked whether others would grow more than the common two heads, and it replied that they would if they grew old and wise enough.

The Sisiutl said, "I assume you have killed the family of scyllans that were eating up my food supply." (I forgot to mention that it also said that local fisher folk made sacrifices of food to it, and that the scyllans had scared most of them away.) When Yamirus replied that they had killed the scyllans, the Sisiutl said that the party had done him a small favor. When Yamirus, fearing the worst, asked what the Sisiutl eats, but it said fish and other sea creatures, and Yamirus noticed that, even as they spoke, fish, attracted by the light of the Sisiutl's flames, repeatedly swam close enough for one great head to swoop forward and swallow them. Yamirus felt relieved.

Yamirus asked about the glowing circle and the statues, and Sisiutl explained that he guarded the portal to the frozen ocean in Stygia, the 5th plane of the Nine Hells. There Zeus has bound Typhon, who had castrated him, and the Sisiutl now guards the portal to make sure none enter who might, either deliberately or inadvertently, free Typhon. The Sisiutl explained to the Yamirus that it had killed Heracles, who at the time was still mortal, because Heracles foolishly disobeyed his father Zeus and sought to kill Typhon. The statutes had been people who had foolishly sought to challenge the Sisiutl in order to get through the portal. In response to a question from Yamirus, the Sisiutl explained that because of the volcanic Mt. Aetna, the Material Plane and Stygia actually lie close to one another in the region.

Yamirus expressed awe that the Sisiutl could kill even the mighty Heracles, and asked why anyone would
want to go to Stygia, and the Sisiutl told him that most go in search of treasure, but some few do wish to free Typhon. Unless I miss my guess, as we ended the last session Yamirus prepared to ask the Sisiutl for information which could help the party on its own quest to rescue Yamirus' mother.

    Update and Experience
    12/20/08

In the previous session the party continued underwater, following an old lava tube as it lost its top half and turned into a trench that went out from the Isle of Aetna into the Graikoí Sea beyond. At the end of the trench they found a 21-headed sisiutl, or The Sisiutl, as it informed Luthia, as it is the progenitor of the entire race of sisiutl. Yamirus asked The Sisiutl if Asterios (The Minotaur) has any particular vulnerabilities, and The Sisiutl informed him that impatience had always been Asterios' vulnerability, "although he's had a millennium to learn patience, whether or not he's taken advantage of the opportunity." The Sisiutl mentioned the Spathi, and Luthia incredulously asked The Sisiutl how it knew about the Spathi. It said, "Oh, I'd been watching Andreas and Adelphos for a little while, a while in your terms, when they attacked you. Since you defeated them, I've been watching you from time to time too." When Yamirus asked more about Asterios, The Sisiutl replied that Asterios had great appetites, for food, "reproduction," and other things. Yamirus shook his fist and trembled thinking of his mother subject to Asterios' "appetites."

The Sisiutl informed the party that in return for killing the family of scyllan, which had become a minor annoyance, eating his food supply and chasing away the fisherfolk who used to make sacrifices of food to him, it offered them a benefit in return: The Sisiutl would grant one party member either a permanent (inherent) bonus of +5 on Charisma or +4 on any other ability, or a temporary (5-day) +20 (enhancement) bonus on one ability score. The Sisiutl told them that they didn't need to decide right away; they could come back for the benefit at any time.

    Yamirus thanked
The Sisiutl, whom he said must be busy, although it insisted with a laugh that "I have nothing but time down here," and the party returned along the trench. Looking at the statues of the people who had foolishly tried to challenge The Sisiutl to get through the portal, Yamirus asked Caerwyn to estimate how long some petrified Castorians had been down there. By Caerwyn's estimate, it had been at least a decade since the most recent petrified Castorians had come there. Yamirus speculated that the Castorians might have wanted to go through the portal as a way to get to the Dru (Druaga), although Thórsljón pointed out that the Dru doesn't live on the 5th layer of the Nine Hells, where the portal leads, nor is the Dru aquatic, while the 5th plane is a vast ocean. Yamirus decided that none of the Castorians had come recently enough to know anything about current plans to bring back the Dru. Yamirus though speculated on whether the Castorians might just have been seeking any entry into the Nine Hells as a way to get to the Dru.

As the party continued swimming back toward the Isle of Minos, Yamirus went to answer a call of nature, and Elvira asked Caerwyn if he needed to restock his arrows.
Caerwyn said that he did, and suggested returning to town to restock. Yamirus and Caerwyn spent the rest of the swim back discussing whether to return to town and if so which one.

Back in the lagoon at the
Delfini, Elvira suggested finding some way to lay to rest the spirits of the dead crew of the Marvos Drakon o. When Yamirus asked how the party might lay the spirits to rest, she suggested first telling them in their language (which she doesn't speak) that the party had defeated their killers, Andreas and Adelphos, and then that Hrothgar and Thórsljón say some prayers. So Yamirus told the spirits, and Hrothgar and Thórsljón said blessings to Thór for a good half hour. A pressure or tension seemed to ease out of the night air over the lagoon on the Isle of Aetna, and the party returned to get what sleep they could before the morning of August 25, 3035, dawned.

    Update and Experience
    1/2/09

I'd like to offer my best wishes for a happy and healthy new year for everyone.

In this week's session we spent some time discussing what new spell Luthia should learn, and finally settled on
nerveskitter. Nerveskitter allows the caster to grant a +5 bonus on initiative to one target within short range (30' currently for Luthia). The caster can cast nerveskitter not only as an immediate action, but even if she remains flatfooted. We figured that nerveskitter will often allow Luthia to grant someone the opportunity to go before an enemy, which the party members agreed would probably help a great deal.

We also discussed Thórsljón's new feat, and I ultimately decided to go with Improved Initiative over Power Critical, as Improved Initiative not only allows him to react faster on the first round, but serves as a prerequisite for two epic feats, Superior Initiative and Dire Charge. Superior Initiative grants yet another +4 to initiative rolls (actually a non-stacking +8, which has the same effect as adding another +4 to the +4 that Improved Initiative grants). Dire Charge, as I've updated it to match the 3.5 version of the pounce special ability (it previously matched the 3.0 pounce ability), allows the character to take a full attack action at the end of a charge.

I had trouble deciding between Improved Initiative and Power Critical. Improved Initiative helps only on the first round, because after that combatants simply go in the same order, one after another (unless Luthia improves their initiative by +5 with
nerveskitter on a subsequent round!). Power Critical, by contrast, helps with every roll to confirm a critical hit. Thórsljón has a decent critical threat range (17-20) and a good multiplier (x3), and a special ability he can use twice a day on a confirmed critical hit (whether or not the target takes extra damage). Later, too, I plan to have him take Overwhelming Critical and Devastating Critical, which would make Power Critical even more valuable. A character uses Improved Initiative, on the other hand, at least once in every combat, while a character might go through multiple combats without scoring a threat of a critical hit. Marc sided with Improved Initiative (which, ironically, moves Thórsljón from having the second-highest initiative bonus in the party after Caerwyn to having the highest initiative bonus), while Dominic sided with Power Critical. I suppose I could just have him, as some point, take two more levels of fighter (he has 4), and take Power Critical as his 6th-level fighter feat.

I'm thinking about perhaps either retraining Thórsljón under the
PHB II to swap a feat (possibly Great Flyby Attack, which he hasn't used for many a moon) for Power Critical. As another option, I could just let him use an epic feat slot to take Power Critical after he gets Devastating Critical (which forces the target to save or die).

On the morning of August 25, 3035, the party discussed returning to town. Hrothgar wanted to return to Maralig to visit the temple of Th
ór he recently opened there, the first in Maralig. Yamirus asked Lindir if he would stay to guard the Delfini and crew, but Lindir demurred, saying that if they were returning to town then he wanted to go deal with his business interests in Maralig. Yamirus asked Captain Kostas if he needed more time to fix the Delfini, and Kostas said, "Where have you been, boy?! What do you think we were doing yesterday?!" With the Delfini ready to set sail, Yamirus informed the captain that the party needed to return to town to prepare for the dangers ahead. Kostas said that the party seems pretty well prepared already, but Yamirus insisted that they needed to get even better prepared. "Well that seems wise," replied Kostas, "you seem to know your business of monster-hunting, lad."

So the party teleported back to Maralig. At the East Gate Yamirus went in to see Colonel Katel. From Katel he heard a rumor ("which you didn't hear from me") that the King's Council had split over whether to grant Yamirus his requested audience at all, and if so, whether to do so openly or in secret. It then occurred to Yamirus that the King of Maradenne meeting openly with a Volencian criminal might provoke the Castorians into war, although Colonel Katel pointed out that Yamirus' own intelligence reports indicated that the Castorians not only weren't massing troops along the border with Maradenne, but mostly had given up trying to control the whole western part of Castor. As Yamirus turned to leave, Katel smiled and said, "Good luck finding your mother, and don't start any wars!" a reference to the party's attack on the maug mercenaries hired by the State of Castor while the maug remained on Castorian territory.

The party walked uphill from East Gate to the Merchant Quarter, and there Yamirus went into the Royal Inn to check for messages. The proprietor, an Annonid woman named Gilvara, greeted him pleasantly, offered the party its usual rooms, which Yamirus declined, and gave Yamirus a note that, as it turned out, Maria had left for him. Yamirus met Maria, you might recall, at Benedictus' tree caf
é, and ended up spending the night with her. Maria wished him well in his quest to find his mother, and asked that he say hello when he next stopped into town. Yamirus smiled a very satisfied smile, and tucked the note in his pocket.

Please note that next week we will start two hours late (8 PM) because Dominic's mother will visit him in honor of his birthday and his wife Emily's baby shower. I hope you'll all join me in wishing Dominic a happy birthday!

    In this week's session we
had a visit from an old friend, Seth, who used to play MacGrćdh, a Cedic sorcerer who joined the party and escorted an elven woman, Melia, and her daughter Luthia, from Volencia to Maradenne, as they'd been expelled along with many other foreigners as a reaction against the party's earlier killing of Castorian wizards, and the continuing attacks by two centaurs and a devilish-looking man on Castorians in the countryside. (The centaurs were the PCs of another former player, Bill, and the devilish-looking man was a NPC with a long story whom the PCs got to know along their journeys.) S'slith, who also sent the party on its mission to Maralig, asked MacGrćdh to protect Melia and Luthia on their way to Maralig. MacGrćdh reacted with great chagrin when he discovered the Melia and Luthia were really silver dragons! (Or perhaps it was Seth who reacted with great chagrin. :-D ) So we spent much of the session catching up with Seth, who has applied to Ph.D. programs in history. I'm sure that Seth will ace his comprehensive master's exams with flying colors. Good luck, Seth!

In the previous session the party had teleported back to Maralig to cash in on the treasure they got from the scyllans and upgrade the party's equipment. The party spent most of the session deciding what items to buy, sell, and enchant. Yamirus already had a list of items he wants to enchant for Luthia, with transforming her
+3 cloak of resistance into a +5 wild cloak of resistance that melds into her form when she switches from humanoid to dragon while granting her the resistance bonus on saving throws. I think as the next item for Luthia Yamirus plans to upgrade her +4 belt of giant strength to a +6 wild belt of giant strength that will benefit her in dragon form. I seem to recall too that Yamirus at least considered selling her +3 amulet of mighty fists and replacing it with a +5 amulet of might fists (a fairly pricey item). I don't know for sure if he decided to do it or not. (Yamirus could save himself some experience here by simply selling her +3 cloak of resistance, buying a +5 cloak of resistance, and adding only the wild ability.

Caerwyn, who has a +11 Dexterity bonus, has seriously outgrown his
+4 mithril chainmail, which allows only a +4 Dexterity bonus. Yamirus plans to take Caerwyn's greater bracers of archery and add to them a -8 enhancement bonus to AC as from +8 bracers of armor so that Caerwyn can get out of his chainmail, which the party will the sell to help defray the enchanting costs. Caerwyn, I believe, also plans to sell his +4 ring of protection and get a +5 ring of protection. (Marc, if you have other items you'd like improved, you might want to let Yamirus know. If you have other items you'd like to buy or sell, please let me know.)

For Hrothgar, Yamirus plans to enchant his
gauntlets of ogre power with a +6 enhancement bonus to Dexterity. While Hrothgar uses his +8 bracers of armor at sea, the +6 enhancement bonus to Dexterity will raise his AC by +3, and at all times will improve his relatively poor Reflex bonus by +3 as well as his relatively poor Reflex save and initiative bonuses. For when they reach the Isle of Minos, Yamirus plans to enchant a mithril breastplate to +5, and put on it major resistance to both fire and electricity. The +5 greater electricity resistance greater fire resistance mithril breastplate won't give Hrothgar quite as large a bonus to AC (+10 total) as his +5 lesser electricity resistance lesser fire resistance full plate (+13 total), but it will allow Hrothgar to use all +5 of his new Dexterity bonus instead of the +1 he can use with the full plate. At some later date, presumably after going to the Labyrinth to rescue Yamirus' mother, Yamirus plans to raise Hrothgar's +4 amulet of natural armor and +6 periapt of Wisdom to grant a +5 enhancement bonus to natural armor. Hrothgar also needs to sell his +3 cloak of resistance and buy a +5 cloak of resistance.

For Thórsljón Yamirus plans to enchant his masterwork gauntlets with a +6 enhancement bonus to Dexterity, as well as with a +5 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls and the holy special ability. (Thórsljón also suggests selling his regular masterwork gauntlets and buying adamantine gauntlets for Yamirus to enchant in their place. The adamantine gauntlets can absorb more punishment if anyone tries to sunder or otherwise damage them, and can overcome the damage reduction of most constructs.) The +6 enhancement bonus to Dexterity will improve his Reflex save and initiative bonuses, although in his celestial armor he's already at the maximum Dexterity bonus, so he won't get an increase in his AC until Yamirus improves Thórsljón's celestial armor. Yamirus plans to improve the celestial armor both by raising the enhancement bonus it grant to AC from +3 to +5, and by adding the nimbleness special ability, which will allow Thórsljón to gain the full benefit of the +9 Dexterity bonus Thórsljón will get when he replaces his current +4 gloves of Dexterity with the +6 enhancement bonus Yamirus plans to put on his gauntlets (or a new pair of adamantine spiked gauntlets). (Thórsljón wants to know if there's any chance Yamirus will add the keen special ability to the gauntlets too, which would cost Yamirus an additional 1040 experience. Thórsljón figures that he'll use the gauntlets mostly when something that's so big and strong that even he can't break its hold has grabbed him, so it's best to maximize their damage potential. Thórsljón understands, however, if adding the keen ability just uses up too much of Yamirus' power.) At some later date Yamirus plans to upgrade Thórsljón's+3 amulet of natural armor and +4 periapt of wisdom to a +5 amulet of natural armor and +6 periapt of wisdom.

Eventually Yamirus plans to upgrade Elvira's
+3 twilight mithril shirt to a +5 twilight mithril shirt, but for now she will just sell her +1 amulet of natural armor and buy a +5 amulet of natural armor. (For that matter, simply buying Elvira +10 bracers of armor would increase her AC by 3. Elvira now suggests that she could add the wild ability to a +5 cloak of resistance and a +6 belt of giant strength that the party buys for Luthia. Luthia could actually contribute up to 75% of the 640 experience points, leaving Elvira to contribute only 160 for each item. That would allow Luthia to have both items before the party enters the Labyrinth, and free up Yamirus to enchant more items for the rest of the party in the remaining 5-8 days before the party goes into he Labyrinth.) Elvira might also like to get a magical weapon. She's been walking around with a masterwork hand crossbow and a masterwork rapier, and although she has rarely used either, it might be nice for her to have magical ones just in case.

Elvira has reached 22nd level now, by the way, and gets her first 9th level spell. Does anyone have any suggestions for what 9th-level spell she should take?
Meteor swarm comes to mind, as does coherent light, a Nador spell that can be used either to do one big pulse of light damage to a target all at once, or to keep a continuous beam on the target wherever it moves (within the long range of the spell), doing a little damage each round but allowing even combatants who can't see the target to target it themselves with attacks. She would need to buy the expensive material foci for coherent light, but since the party has returned to town anyway, that probably wouldn't present much of a problem. I know though that there are all kinds of other cool 9th-level spells, not only in the PHB, but in the Spell Compendium, and maybe even in the PHB II.

Somewhere the Powers of Goodness are smiling on Yamirus for his willingness to sacrifice so much experience for the benefit of other party members. :-)

(Note for potential new players: I'm sort of snowed under with work (and a recent illness) right now so if I'm slow at responding it's not because we're not interested. I promise I'll get back to you. )

We had a short session this week in honor of Dominic's birthday. Happy birthday! I believe too that today is Marc's birthday, so happy birthday Marc!

In this week's session we mostly continued our discussion about which magic items to buy, sell and enchant. Meanwhile, back in town, Lindir wants to upgrade his equipment since the party attracts dangers substantially greater than he anticipated, so he wonders if the party plans to sell all the gems, or keep the diamonds for true resurrection, revenance and the like. He's OK with not selling the diamonds, so long as the party will cast a true resurrection on him if he dies while working for them. He's also eager to sell all the items from the scyllans' treasure hoard (many of which came from the Marvos Drakon o), so that he can see just how much he has to spend for upgrading his items. He plans to replace his +4 belt of giant strength with a +6 belt of giant strength, and his +1 deadly precision rapier and +2 deadly precision cutlass with a +5 deadly precision cutlass. He might like to get the new cutlass make from adamantine, and possibly with another enchantment or two that would increase the damage he can do. He'd also like to get better bracers of armor.

We have to skip this coming week because Dominic has a work engagement. In two weeks I promise to have every balrog in the mutliverse attack the party for a change of pace! :-D

    1/31/09 & 2/7/09

We skipped 1/24/09 on account of a commitment of Dominic and class preparation by me. As you know, I don't like to miss a week, but sometimes we just can't avoid it.

We've been joined by a new player, Brian. Welcome Brian! Brian's character, Njord Bjornsson, hasn't met the party yet, so I won't give away any of his secrets. I will just say that Njord is on his way to Maralig, the capital of Maradenne, the Delnonid (half-elven) kingdom.

Last time the party returned to Maralig in order to sell all their loot from the family of scyllans, and to buy better equipment for the party. This week Yamirus identified all the magic items and tallied up much of the loot (when Luthia heard that the two tomes enhanced intelligence, she called dibs on them), then went to Benedictus's Tree Café in the Volencian Quarter, and there bought a +5 cloak of resistance for Luthia and +10 bracers of armor for Elvira. (Dominic, don't forget to sell Luthia's old +3 cloak of resistance and Elvira's old +5 bracers of armor. Although actually Thórsljón has +3 bracers of armor, and could use the +5 bracers of armor to have a better incorporeal armor class. So maybe sell his +3 bracers of armor instead. He also has an old +2 ring of protection, so go ahead and add that to the items to sell as well. While we're at it, let's buy Thórsljón a +5 cloak of resistance and sell his +3 cloak of resistance; he might as well have the extra +2 on his saving throws when you face Asterios. I reference to our discussion of cold iron and the order of enchanting items, I recall now too that Yamirus is planning to add an armor bonus to Caerwyn's bracers of archery, and maybe enhance the natural armor bonus on Elvira's necklace.)

On the way to the café, Yamirus asked Luthia if she wanted a pretty one, or just a serviceable one, and she said she wanted a pretty one. At the café, Yamirus ran into Robertus (Benedictus' grandson) who let him know in confidence that there's a pool going on the outcome of Yamirus' quest to rescue his mother, in which Robertus bet on Yamirus. Yamirus asked the odds, but Robertus would say only that if he won, he'd win big. Robertus also said, "You know what they say about Volencians: if all of us were dead, we still couldn't keep a secret!" Inside the café, Yamirus noticed the elders giving each other sly looks. Benedictus asked him how the quest was going. Yamirus bought both the cloak and the bracers from Benedictus, who gave him a discount. Then the party planned to head over to the Merchant Quarter and see Khonifer, the surly old dwarf who makes fine magical weapons and armor.

Oh on the subject of using Power Attack with gauntlets, I think that although you can use Power Attack with an unarmed attack (as well as a natural weapon), that you can't use it while punching with gauntlets because gauntlets are considered weapon attacks rather than unarmed attacks. I would make sense, stepping out of the game rules, however, that if you could use Power Attack punching barehanded, you could use Power Attack when punching with gauntlets, and I might make that a house rule after I give it further thought.

    A Dragon Valentine's Day

In our last session the party teleported back to Maralig to sell a large hoard of treasure they took from the family of scyllans it fought, and to improve their magical equipment. At Benedictus' tree café Yamirus got a discount from Benedictus--the mentor of Yamirus' mentor, his uncle Marius--on a fancy +5 cloak of resistance for Luthia and some attractive +10 bracers of armor for Elvira.

This week a group of elven refugees arrived from the city Volencia at the east gate of Maralig, the capital of Maradenne, the Delnonid (half-elven) kingdom. An elven woman named Melia and a redheaded Northern Blóthfólk man named Njord Bjornsson led the group. Njord noticed a Delnon looking at the line of travelers through a large gem, and soon the dwarf Sergeant Sarkax asked the Njord and Melia to step out of line and follow him inside the bole of the great mithrilwood tree through which the dwarven road runs into Maralig. They complied, as did Njord when Sarkax asked him to leave his greataxe with some guards they met as Sarkax lead them deeper and higher into the tree.

Inside, Colonel Katel, who commands the East Gate, met with them, and asked them their business in town. He didn't seem hostile, but rather thorough about questioning visitors who appear other than they really are. From what Katel said, it was obvious that he knew that Melia was really a silver dragon, and that Njord was a werebear. When they assured him that they meant nothing ill, and Njord told Katel in a vague way his business, Katel wished them a pleasant stay and let them go. The guards returned Njord's greataxe to him.

Melia offered to help Njord find his way around, and he confided in her that his mission involved finding a Volencian wizard named Yamirus. She smiled in recognition at the name, since she had once traveled with Yamirus and the party. Melia took Njord to see Galvora, the owner of the Royal Inn (and granddaughter of the owner Melia had known when she'd last been to Maradenne some two centuries earlier), who said that Yamirus had been through earlier that morning, and might have gone to the Volencian Quarter. Njord tried to tip Galvora, but she suggested he go to Arandor, a moneychanger in the western part of the Merchant District, and get some Maradenne money. Melia offered to show him to where she thought they could find it based on Galvora's directions.

Meanwhile Yamirus, with an assist from Luthia and Thórsljón, continued to calculate the value of various parts of the treasure hoard. While valuing a gold dragon comb from the treasure, Luthia remarked that she thought people should value representations of dragons more. Luthia also took a +6 belt of giant strength from the hoard, and tossed in her +4 belt of giant strength for Yamirus to sell.

The party went to various magic shops and arms and armor shops around the Merchant Quarter, selling the many weapons, pieces of armor, and assorted magic items that the scyllans had taken from the wreck of the Marvos Drakon o after the Spathi burned it to the waterline in the lagoon of the Isle of Aetna. Thórsljón remembered to purchase +5 cloaks of resistance for both himself and Hrothgar, and asked if Caerwyn needed one; the two gave their old +3 cloaks of resistance to Yamirus to sell. The party went on to the tree shop of Grinkmoor, the pleasant dwarven diamond merchant, and he treated them to refreshments and charged them only a 2% fee for exchanging their gems for money. The party didn't sell either of the large diamonds from the hoard, one worth 6,000 Accylig gold federals and the other worth 7,000, but gave them to Hrothgar to add to his stash of diamonds reserved for true resurrection spells, bringing his total to 93,000 Accylig gold federals worth of diamonds, nearly enough to cast four true resurrection spells. Thórsljón pointed out that one of his party bags of holding contains a pouch holding 20 diamonds worth 5,000 Accylig gold federals each, for a total of 100,000 gold federals worth, enough to cast four more true resurrection spells. Yamirus, however, wanted Thórsljón to keep the diamonds as a reserve at least for the time being.

Next the party headed to the tree shop of the moneychanger Arandor, whom Yamirus suspected of being Arandor the gold dragon whom the party had helped against the green dragons who had come in search of Melia, a silver dragon and Luthia's mother. Arandor the gold dragon, you might recall, took the shape of a Volencian and joined Yamirus, Benedictus and Marius in Apopolis for the Apopolian award ceremony to honor the party. When the party entered the shop, Arandor greeted Yamirus as "Mr. Antonitus" and Yamirus winked to let Arandor know that Yamirus knew, or thought he knew, that Arandor the moneychanger was also Arandor the gold dragon. Arandor charged the party a 1% fee for exchanging various foreign coins (mostly Graikoí) for Maradenne platinum trees, gold seas, silver plains and copper forts. Just then all hell broke loose. As I promised in a recent Update and Experience, every balrog in the Abyss attacked the party in Arandor's tree shop.

Seriously though, just then Melia and Njord entered the shop. Yamirus recognized the elven woman as none other than Melia the silver dragon, in the guise she had long taken when she and Luthia first traveled with the party. Before Yamirus could react, however, Luthia cried out joyfully, "Mom! I mean Mother!" and she ran to Melia and they embraced joyfully at their reunion. It soon turned out that Melia and Arandor knew each other, and indeed quite intimately at some time in the past, but that Arandor's parents hadn't approved of intermarriage (between a gold dragon and a silver dragon). Arandor, however, pointed out that it was Melia who'd left, even though he'd said he didn't care what his parents thought. Melia though said that when push came to shove he never would have gone against their wishes.

At first Yamirus wanted to bolt before the two dragons got more hostile, but soon he found himself wanting to bolt in embarrassment as the two dragons got romantic and a bit lewd. Arandor arranged a dinner date with Melia for that night, and Luthia asked Melia to stay with the party for a while, and Melia agreed.

Melia introduced the Northern Blóthfólk man as Njord. Njord said that he'd come looking for Yamirus with a message from S'slith. Yamirus welcomed Njord and agreed to Njord's request that they go somewhere and talk, after verifying that Njord actually had come from S'slith, because Njord knew about the first time that S'slith had met Yamirus and charmed him to make sure he wasn't really an agent of the Castorians. Yamirus suggested that Njord accompany the party as it ran the rest of its errands around town, and Njord agreed. Yamirus warned Njord that the next merchant the party planned to see, Khonifer, was bad-tempered and that Njord should be on his best behavior lest Khonifer throw him, and perhaps the whole party out. Khonifer had one been so irritated by the insane nymph that briefly joined the party that he'd banned her from his shop. Melia suggested that she and Luthia take on dwarven form, and Melia turned from an elven woman into a dwarven woman, while Luthia turned from a Volencian girl into a dwarven girl. So with a last smoldering look between Melia to and Arandor, the party plus Njord and Melia left Arandor's tree shop.

Yamirus gave Lindir his share of the treasure, and Lindir went off to use his own contacts as an importer and exporter to buy a +6 belt of giant strength, +10 bracers of armor and a holy surge greater deadly precision +5 rapier. He had originally thought to get a holy greater deadly precision shocking +5 rapier, but after listening to Thórsljón talk about the benefits of a holy surge weapon against the sorts of enemies the party seems to typically face (i.e., evil enemies), Lindir opted to replace the shock by upgrading the holy to holy surge. Lindir had to sell his old +4 belt of giant strength and +8 bracers of armor, use his entire cut of the treasure from his travels with the party so far, and throw in another 36,000 Maradenne gold seas to pay for it all, but he wanted to make sure that he would be able to contribute more to the defense of the party against the terrible dangers that it somehow seems to attract like iron filings to a magnet.

The party went to Khonifer's ground-level establishment, where the real action actually takes place below ground. The dwarves on the ground floor, knowing the party by now, directed the party downstairs as usual, with a bit of a joke about the bad moods of "the Old Man." Khonifer, however, greeted the party almost pleasantly, called party members some of his best clients, and applauding their replacement of a crazy nymph with two dwarven females. Yamirus, indeed, began to get embarrassed again (but after all, it WAS Valentine's Day, so love, or something, was in the air in Maradenne! Just be glad you weren't on the Delfini in those cramped quarters with a married couple, Psari and Thalassa!)

Yamirus told Khonifer that Thórsljón wanted to buy a high-end magical cold iron gauntlet. Knonifer had four nice gauntlets, and using most of his own wealth and a decent chunk of the undivided remaining party wealth, Thórsljón bought an evil outisder bane holy keen +5 cold iron spiked gauntlet with +6 enhancement bonus to Dexterity and a swift true strike once/day, for a price of about 270,387.5 Maradenne gold seas. (By the way, that actually means that Thórsljón has a regular masterwork spiked gauntlet on his other hand, as he never sold it.) Probably no other shop even in a metropolis could have had such an expensive weapon for sale (outside of a planar metropolis or equivalent Material Plane cities like Traimic, the capital of the Empire of the Eastlands, Accylig, the capital of the Republic of Greater Accylig, or Gonific, the capital of the Pirate Kingdom on the Mithril Sea). Khonifer might be intolerant and rude, but he does good work. From Khonifer the party also bought greater electricity resistance greater fire resistance +5 mithril breastplate for Hrothgar. Hrothgar spent most of his own wealth purchasing it, with some of the party's undivided wealth going to cover the rest. (Reminder to Dominic: we forgot to sell Thórsljón's +4 gloves of Dexterity and Hrothgar's electricity resistance fire resistance +5 full plate. I calculate the gloves at 8,000 Accylig gold federals or 10,000 Maradenne gold seas. I calculate the plate at 31,325 Accylig gold federals or 39,156.25 Maradenne gold seas. The two combined will bring in 39,325 Accylig gold federals or 49,156.25 Maradenne gold seas.) Thórsljón sold an old +2 ring of protection and some old +3 bracers of armor.

Seeing almost everyone else get nice new equipment, Yamirus, sounding a bit like Luthia, said, "I want something new!" He later decided, however, that the party could no longer afford to get him +10 bracers of armor. Elvira, however, suggested that since she hadn't had to spend any of her own wealth to get her +10 bracers of armor, she would be willing to contribute a substantial sum to getting a pair for Yamirus. Hrothgar suggested that Yamirus could sell Hrothgar's +6 bracers of armor to help defray the cost of the +10 bracers of armor. Since Hrothgar's mithril breastplate has no armor check penalty, he can swim it just as well as with no physical armor, so he also suggested that Yamirus could give his +6 bracers of armor to Hrothgar, who would then sell is own +8 bracers of armor to help defray the cost of +10 bracers for Yamirus. Selling the +6 bracers of armor would provide 18,000 Accylig gold federals or 22,500 Maradenne gold seas. Selling the +8 bracers of armor instead would provide 32,000 Accylig gold federals or 40,000 Maradenne gold seas. (The +10 bracers that Yamirus would like go for 125,000 Maradenne gold seas. Selling Thórsljón's gloves and Hrothgar's plate armor will provide 49,156.25 Maradenne gold seas. Selling the +6 bracers would bring the total to 71,656.25 Maradenne gold seas, reducing what Yamirus needs for the bracers to 53,343.75. Selling the +8 bracers instead would bring the total to 89,156.25, reducing what Yamirus needs for the bracers to 35,843.25.)

This is for everyone, but for Brian I want to say that occasionally when I get the motivation I'll do an online role-playing email. If you'd like to have your character respond to things in the email, even if you just write what your character is thinking about them and don't have him say or do anything visible, that's great! I give out experience for it. Dominic usually writes with Yamirus' response if the email involves Luthia, although with the baby on the way he might be too busy right now. Anyway though, you're welcome to respond. If you don't have time to write anything, that's OK too.

    David
    --------------
Melia said, "So let me look at you, Luthia. How have you been doing?"

Luthia transformed into a large silver dragon. "Look Mother! I've grown a LOT! I'm now bigger and stronger than everyone in the party!" Luthia looked over at Thórsljón with a petulant little frown on her face, "Well bigger, anyways. And I'm the hardest to hit because my scales have gotten so hard already!"

Thórsljón and Hrothgar guffawed, and even Elvira let a small smile play about her lips. "Yes, dear," said Melia, "you HAVE grown! I'm very impressed. Living with humanoids has accelerated your growth nicely. Don't forget, however, that just because you're bigger and stronger doesn't make you invincible, Luthia."

"Yes, Mother," replied Luthia, a bit petulant again at being told what she was sure she OBVIOUSLY knew already.

"So dear, how has Yamirus been treating you?" asked Melia, distracting Luthia from her petulance.

"Oh, Yami is GREAT! Look at all this treasure he's given me!" she exclaimed happily. "Of course I earned it," she added hastily. "I'm sure you did," agreed Melia soothingly. Luthia started pointing out the magic items still functioning in her dragon form, one at a time, as Melia nodded and expressed approval of each one. When Luthia got to her +4 ring of protection she said, "And here's a powerful ring of protection, that makes me harder to hit, except, um... ."

    "Except what, Luthia?" asked Melia.

"Except that, well, it's the weakest one in the party now. Everyone else has a better one now, even Care, and he doesn't even get into fights." Luthia frowned.

"But dear," said Melia brightly, "didn't you say you're already the hardest one to hit in the party?"

Luthia replied hesitatingly, annoyed that her own bragging had dug a hole for her, "Well, um, that's true... 'cept that I'm easy to hit with touch attacks because they ignore my scales and stuff. And now that I'm bigger, it's even easier to hit me with touch attacks, like disintegrate and stuff!" she finished with a flourish, pleased with her ability to talk her way out of the hole she'd dug.

Thórsljón smiled and interjected, "Vel I'm suure, Luthia, thaat if ve haf any treasure left after buying Yamirus' bracers ve vil buy thu a better ring." Luthia snorted, so Thórsljón said, "Kom now, Luthia, thu vouldn't vant some nasty Castorian varrior skewering Yamirus' tender skin when he couldn't even dent your hard scales, vould you?"

"Of course not!" she exclaimed. "But, um, well they don't usually go after Yami because I'm in the way! And, um, you too."

"Luthia," asked Melia, "has Yamirus given you any coins?"

"Um, well, I guess so," said Luthia, all too sure where THAT kind of talk was leading.

"Well then, dear, perhaps you could use some of the coins to help defray the cost of a better, ring, after selling the one you have now," concluded Melia with an indulgent smile.

"Ja, Luthia," jumped in Thórsljón before she could reply, "ve could get 20,000 Maradenne gold seas for thinn ring, and that vould go a lang vay toward paying the 62,500 gold seas ve need to get thu the better ring."

Luthia saw Melia nod her head in approval. "Yeah, I s'pose so, Thórs," replied Luthia with resignation--just before she realized she needed to sharpen her claws on the nearest mithrilwood tree.

Thórsljón carefully considered the two new spells he might memorize regularly, one at 2nd level and one at 3rd level. Since Hrothgar's mass bear's endurance lasts only 21 hours, Thórsljón decided to memorize his own 6-hour bear's endurance. Thórsljón knew that Hrothgar memorized a 21-hour bear's endurance, as Hrothgar had cast it on Thórsljón prior to their encounter with the chromium half-dragon scyllan, Thór be praised! Thórsljón thought having two spare bear's endurance spells rather than just one, however, might stand the party in good stead at some point. If nothing else, memorizing his own bear's endurance would enable two party members to benefit from the extra fortitude during the 3 hours a day when Hrothgar's mass bear's endurance did not cover them all. If someone dispelled Hrothgar's mass bear's endurance during a fight, moreover, Thórsljón would have the ability to give himself back the increase to his fortitude right in the middle of combat without having to rely on Hrothgar to get to him at a time when the party probably needed Hrothgar to cast a mass heal anyway. So for 2nd level, bear's endurance it was!

Reviewing all the 3rd levels spells for which he might pray to Thór, Thórsljón considered first mass aid. At his low caster level, Thórsljón would be able to grant only 1d8+6 (average 10.5) temporary hit points, barely better than what he could grant with his celestial spell-like ability of aid, albeit to the whole party instead of just to one member. With mass aid Hrothgar, however, could grant 1d8+15 (average 19.5), or nearly twice as much protection. Thórsljón thought that sonorous hum would also benefit Hrothgar, as it would allow him to cast summon elemental monolith but not have to concentrate on it, and would thus free up Hrothgar to cast healing spells or fight in place of concentrating. "Hey Hrothgar," Thórsljón said, "Haf thu thought about memorizing mass aid or sonorous hum at 3rd level?

"Ja to mass aid," replied Hrothgar. "I used to memorize it regularly, but I haf been memorizing a vater breathing in its place. I vil return to mass aid before ve go into the Labyrinth, if I haf time, and Thór villing ve ever get thaat far. Sonorous hum, though, nei, I haf neinn thought about thaat. Uffda! By Thór's rauthr beard thaat ert an excellent idea! I vil drop minn holy storm, vhich has such a limited area and does such limited damage, and take sonorous hum instead. Vel said, Thórsljón!"

Elvira spoke up, even though nobody had addressed her first, which was unusual. "Gentlemen, I believe that sonorous hum is also an arcane spell. I really have little use for it, as I know no spells that require concentration. Perhaps Yamirus could learn it, however, and memorize it on those days when he also memorizes a summon elemental monolith spell. What do you think, Yamirus?"

"Thaat ert a goth idea, Elvira!" replied Hrothgar. Thórsljón smiled and nodded approval, and then returned to considering his own spell choices. At 3rd level he considered girallon's blessing, which would give him an extra pair of arms, but as it wouldn't allow him to make weapon attacks, he dismissed it. Ah, but in the light of the recent combat with a ship full of incorporeal undead, Thórsljón settled upon ghost touch weapon, which for a minute per level would give his hammer or gauntlet the ability to strike an incorporeal creature without the usual 50% miss chance. Thórsljón frowned unaccustomedly for a moment, recalling that fighting giants required no such magic, but just clean, honest killing of evil creatures, the thought of which brought the usual smile back to his face.

Hrothgar continued speaking about his spell choices. "I haf been memorizing four endure elements spells at 1st level," he said. "Now that I vil be vearing the armor vith fire resistance at sea, I vil not need an endure elements for minnself. So I vil only haf to memorize three endure elements spells..."

"Oh!" exclaimed Luthia excitedly. "That reminds me! Now that I'm older, the heat doesn't bother me anymore. So I won't need an endure elements spell anymore either. Thanks Roth!"

"... make that only TWO endure elements spells," continued Hrothgar without missing a beat. "And thu ert velkom, Luthia. So I think I vil return to memorizing a comprehend languages and an obscuring mist. I think ve all haf the same deflection bonus thaat the shield of faith spell vould grant, so I think I vil skip that von. So unless anyvon has any other suggestions, I vil memorize comprehend languages and obscuring mist tomorrow instead of endure elements." [Actually with Njord joining the party, Hrothgar will probably memorize three endure elements spells and comprehend languages, but Hrothgar doesn't know yet as of this conversation that Njord will join the party out at sea. The shield of faith spell can grant a +5 deflection bonus, which actually exceeds Luthia's current bonus of +4 and Njord's current bonus of +0, so actually two party members could benefit from shield of faith at the moment. I think that Luthia probably will just buy herself a +5 ring of protection as that seemed to be the hole she dug for herself in the last role-playing email. I think too that the party might end up springing for some sort of ring of protection for Njord too once he actually joins the party, but the party might not be able to afford a +5 ring, and if not, Hrothgar probably will memorize a shield of faith for Njord instead of the comprehend languages until such time as the party gets Njord a +5 ring of protection.]

The ghost touch weapon spell reminded Thórsljón of the 2nd level ghost touch armor spell, which for a minute per caster level would make his armor effective against incorporeal undead too. Hmm. Ghost touch armor, he thought, or bear's endurance? That was a tough choice. Thórsljón spoke his thought aloud to the party. "The ghost touch veapon spell at 3rd level reminded me of the ghost touch armor spell at 2nd level. Should I keep bear's endurance at 2nd level or memorize ghost touch armor instead? Incorporeal creatures can touch me mikill easier than corporeal creatures (his incorporeal AC is 9 worse than his regular AC), but ve haf encountered incorporeal creatures only vonce since I haf been vith the party, or tvice if thu count vhat happened between vhen thu rescued me and vhen I returned to help thu combat Elvira's friendly family." Thórsljón grinned and winked at Elvira, who very nearly giggled. "Ve regularly combat, on the other hand," Thórsljón continued, "corporeal creatures thaat inflict massive damage, and sometimes vhen Hrothgar's mass bear's endurance has ended for the day. So I er thinking of sticking vith bear's endurance. Vhat do thu all think?"

"Bah!" exclaimed Hrothgar. "Stay vith bear's endurance. Ve bashed those incorporeal undead just fine vithout ghost touch armor, and vith a ghost touch veapon thu vil be able to bash them even better, by Thór's hammar!"

Elvira spoke up again. "Gentlemen, weren't those undead relatively weak? What if we encounter much more powerful incorporeal undead that we can't kill with a single spell or round of melee attacks? Might not Thórsljón be better off protected by ghost touch armor?"

"I still say stay vith bear's endurance," concluded Hrothgar. Having said her piece, Elvira said nothing further.

"Maybe you or Hrothgar could memorize ghost touch armor and cast in on me?" Luthia asked hopefully. "Incorporeal creatures have no respect for dragon scales, I tell you, none whatsoever!"

Thórsljón and Hrothgar, guffawed, much to Luthia's annoyance, but Elvira managed to suppress the smile she felt coming to her lips.

Should Thórsljón Be a Ninja or a Pirate?; Yamirus Responds to Elvira

As Thórsljón reaches 23rd level and takes his 10th level of the lightning warrior prestige class, I realize that he's got only 19 class levels, which opens a debate about what he should take as his 20th class level the next time he levels up. I see that on my penciled sheet with ideas for his future, I'd started him at either 11th level lightning warrior or 1st level godling at 24th level. Since both are epic levels, however, he can't take either of them until he gets to 25th and takes his 21st class level. So when he gets to his 20th class level, should he take pirate or ninja? :-D

Ok, there actually are pirate and ninja classes in 3.5, but I'm not seriously thinking about either one for him. I have, however, been debating whether he should take a level of barbarian, his first class (and of which he has two levels) or cleric, his second class (of which he has only one level). A third option, pious templar, came to me Thursday morning about 7 AM just after I'd gone to bed. I got up and looked at the prestige class, and to qualify he'd need to drop one of his current feats and replace it with True Believer. (Both the pious templar prestige class and the True Believer feat appear in Complete Divine.) He can qualify for True Believer, which gives you a +2 insight bonus on one saving throw per day. It also allows you to use a relic of your deity.

(Relics appear in both Complete Divine and Magic Item Compendium, but they're all designed for Greyhawk deities, so only the ones for Bahamut and Tiamat really apply to Nador, although some might be easy to convert, like the belt of the champion, a Kord item, which could pretty simply become a Thór item with little or no change [it grants a +6 enhancement bonus to Strength, like a +6 belt of giant strength, and it grants a +4 bonus to grapple and bull rush checks. The Kord item called the sword of mighty thews, a +3 dragonbane greatsword that grants a +4 luck bonus on saving throws against dragon's breath, could become a +3 giantbane greathammer as a Thór item, although I don't know off the cuff what I'd do about the +4 luck bonus, other than perhaps make it a +4 luck bonus to AC against attacks from giants or something. In any case, as you see, these items aren't all that powerful. I could make more powerful relics, and indeed Kord's aren't even the most powerful non-epic ones, but as the party's magic items are generally better than virtually all of the existing relics already, I'd say it's likely that Thórsljón would get little benefit from the True Believer feat. I see that Magic Item Compendium weakened relics from Complete Divine, and made them less expensive. That actually fits with the idea of having relics of varying powers: so the ones in Complete Divine are regular or intermediate relics, the ones in Magic Item Compendium are lesser, and I could make up greater and then epic ones too. Most likely I'll never get around to it though as it's hardly pressing, so Thórsljón's not likely to get much direct benefit from True Believer.)

Most likely if I were going to have Thórsljón drop a feat to take True Believer, I'd have him drop Improved Initiative, as it's his newest feat and one he's never used. I know that Improved Initiative is a requirement for two different epic feats (Superior Initiative and Dire Charge) he might someday take, but I think there are four feats (Epic Rage, Hyper Rage, Overwhelming Critical, and Devastating Critical) he's likely to take before he'd ever take the ones that need Improved Initiative. If he gets that far he could, I suppose, just take Improved Initiative in one of his epic feat slots.

So what's the advantage of taking one level of pious templar? Well it would give him a +2 on both Fort and Will saves (and Will is his weakest save, although Fort is already by far his highest), and he'd have access to 1st-level paladin spells, but the main benefit is the special ability called mettle. Mettle allows you, when you make a successful Fort or Will save against a spell that causes some partial effect on even a successful saving throw, to avoid the effect entirely. So you could make your Fort save against disintegrate, with mettle, and instead of taking 5d6 points of damage, take no damage at all. If you miss your Will save against phatasmal killer but make your Fort save, you don't even take the 3d6 points of damage. Mettle doesn't just apply to hit point damage either. If you make your Will save against antipathy, for example, you don't still take the reduction in your Dexterity of 4 points. Mettle is sort of like evasion but applied to Fort and Will saves instead of Reflex saves. I actually have a family of thunder spells that all grant a Fort save, and mettle would allow you to take no damage instead of half damage from the family of thunder spells.

Here's a brief comparative analysis of the attributes of one level each of barbarian, cleric, and pious templar. Barbarian, ironically, is the only one that would improve his Reflex save (because it's the 3rd level of barbarian).

    Saves Skill
BAB Fort Ref Will HD Points Special Abilities
    Barbarian +1 +0 +1 +1 d12 4 Trap Sense +1; +1 level for improved uncanny dodge
    Cleric +1 +1 +0 +1 d8 2 Spells:1 1st; 3 4th; feat of Str rises from +11 to +12
    Pious Templar +1 +2 +0 +2 d10 2 METTLE; Spells: 2 1st-level paladin

Let me add that the 1st-level paladin spell bless weapon has the great effect of always confirming a critical hit against an evil opponent. The downside is that it won't work on a weapon that already has an effect related to critical hits, like vorpal, keen, or impact (which doubles the threat range on a blunt weapon). So to use bless weapon on his hammer, Thórsljón would have to get Yamirus (or some other spellcaster with Craft Magic Arms and Armor) to strip the impact ability off of Thórsljón's hammer. Thórsljón though has been wanting to get rid of impact anyway, as it doesn't stack with his Improved Critical (greathammer) feat anyway, and so just takes up a magical ability "space" on his hammer. (For that matter he wants to get rid of mighty cleaving, since he already has the Great Cleave feat, and perhaps defense, which he's never used, as it hardly fits with his personality.) Bless weapon lasts a minute per level, so for Thórsljón would last only 10 rounds, although if he got a lesser rod of metamagic (Extend Spell) for 3,000 gp his bless weapon would last for 20 rounds. [You know, if we got Hrothgar a greater rod of metamagic (Extend Spell) for 24,500 gp, his mass bear's endurance would last 42 hours!] I wonder if it's possible to get a rod of lesser metamagic (Persistent Spell), as that would make a bless weapon last 24 hours. I just checked and someone online seems to have done a competent job of calculating the price of a rod of lesser metamagic (Persistent Spell) at 33,000 gp.

Moment of clarity, another 1st-level paladin spell, works like resurgence in that it grants someone who has failed a saving throw against an ongoing effect (like a charm or a wrack), but moment of clarity has the added benefit of having a casting time of an immediate action, meaning that you don't have to waste a standard action (when you could be bashing an enemy) casting it.

Divine sacrifice allows you to sacrifice 10 hit points do to an extra +5d6 points of damage on one attack. Alas it would last only 1 round for Thórsljón, but it could prove handy, especially in conjunction with a true strike, when you really need to do some damage (say to a demigod you can barely hit). Also if it's possible to buy such a thing, a rod of less metamagic (Persistent Spell) would make it last for 24 hours, so he could use it any time he wanted. (You don't have to take the -10 hit points and get the extra damage, so if you make it persist all day, you get to use it when you want, and only when you want.) If the party just got a rod of lesser metamagic (Persistent Spell) for 33,000 gp, Thórsljón could use two of its three daily charges to keep a bless weapon and a divine sacrifice going each day all day. Someone else might be able to use the rod to make another spell (with a fixed or personal range) last on himself or herself all day.

Silverbeard grants a +2 sacred bonus to AC. It too would last only 10 rounds for Thórsljón. Rhino's charge with a swift action casting time and allows you to do double damage when you charge in the same round you cast it. Warning shout, which has a casting time of an immediate action, allows a character to stop all allies within 30 feet from being flat-footed even though they haven't acted yet, and awakens any naturally sleeping ally with in the area too.

Thórsljón can't get access from his clerical spell list to any of the spells I've detailed above. The 4th-level spells to which he would gain access if he were to take a level of cleric include some decent spells, but nothing really jumps out as a must-have, and between his armor (freedom of movement) and his celestial spell-like abilities (holy smite and neutralize poison), he already had access to three 4th-level spells. Taking the level of cleric appeal more for raising the feat of Strength to an even +12 (where it effectively grants Thórsljón and extra +6 enhancement on his Strength since he normally has a +6 enhancement bonus) for one round once per day. Alas it lasts only for one round and he can do it only once per day. (Now that he's leveled up to 10th level of thunder warrior and gotten storm rage, when he rages his Strength will rise to 50, and with the +12 feat of Strength to 56. Keep in mind though that with the +11 feat of Strength his Strength would still rise to 55, so it's almost as good.)

I know that his next level will take a while to reach, but I'd like to decide now before he uses Improved Initiative whether he's going to keep it or drop it for True Believer. I suppose technically under my own rules, which allow the retraining option from Player's Handbook II, he could stick with Improved Initiative now and just retrain it to True Believer when he levels up to 20th if he decides to take the one level of pious templar at 24th (20th class level).

Thórsljón has come up with trick for Luthia: cast a fly spell on her to increase her maneuverability to good. She could still fly at her higher speed, but when she needs to turn or do other maneuvers she could rely on the fly spell to give her enhanced maneuverability.

    Thórsljón
+2,000 discussion of what to take at 20th level, feats, relics, metamagic rods, and many spell choices
+500 idea for Hrothgar to get a greater rod of metamagic (Extend Spell) to extend the mass bear's endurance to nearly two days
+500 idea for Luthia to use fly to gain good maneuverability while flying
    Thórsljón total: 3,000

The player of Yamirus wrote the following:

Yamirus scratched at the piece of parchment. He pondered the directly proportional relationship between the success of the party and the amount of accounting required to manage the inventory of recovered items. As he was comparing the amount of money the recently sold treasure had brought with the expected expenditures for upgrading their equipment, his concentration was disrupted as he heard his name.

"Perhaps Yamirus could learn it, however, and memorize it on those days when he also memorizes a summon elemental monolith spell. What do you think, Yamirus?" "

"Huh? Oh...Sonorus Hum...Sonorus Hum." Yamirus repeated as he searched his memory. "Yes, well, that would be extremely useful in maintaining the arcane bindings which establish the corporal form of a summoned monolith on this plane of existance whilst still allowing the castor the mental capacity to execute other arcane works."

"I regret that no spellbook we have liberated contains Sonorus Hum. Still, we are in a Metropolis. A leafy Metropolis, but a Metropolis just the same. We should be able to find a scroll amongst the plethora of magical merchants. Since the spell is of a modest level of difficulty, we should be able to procure it at a relatively low cost. A fine idea, indeed, madame!" Yamirus bowed his head in acknowledgement of Elivira's good idea.

Yamirus continued, "Now, on the topic of enchanting additional magical items. If you gentlemen, and ladies, would be willing to sacrifice some of the skill you have gained from our many experiences, we should be able to create the items we've discussed while still allowing me enhance my own arcane abilities to better prepare for the oncoming challenges [Yamirus will be able to level up to 25th]."

"Oh!" he exclaimed as a sudden though leapt to his mind, "Raw materials. We will still require raw materials, which implies possessing sufficient funds as to acquire said raw materials in this green city." He bent his head back over the parchment and dipped his pen in the small vial of ink. "Hmm...yes...I think we can barter that down a bit...should not be a problem...surely we can sell a wand or two...yes."

    Update and Experience
    2/28/09 & 3/28/09

Between my throwing out my back in February so badly that Dominic had to go grocery shopping for me for the next week or so (thank you Dominic), and Dominic welcoming a new baby, Sarah, into his life this month, (congratulations, Dominic!) we haven't gotten very far lately.

In the Valentine's Day session, the party ran errands around Maralig on August 25, 3033, spending hundreds of thousands of gold pieces buying and upgrading magic items for various party members. In the two sessions since Valentine's Day, the party finished up its errands in Maralig. Since the party funds had begun to run dry, Elvira contributed all of her remaining personal platinum toward getting Yamirus +10 bracers of armor. Elvira reminded the party to get a +5 ring of protection to replace Luthia's +4 ring of protection. The party sold the old ring and bought the new one, bringing Luthia's AC to an amazing 49, a full 12 better than Thórsljón's second place AC of 37 (and in reality, because of rage and a flaw, he has a functional AC of only 33, or 16 worse than Luthia's!).

Yamirus made sure that the party had every last item it needed for the enchantment upgrades they plan to do over the next four days, and when they ran short on coins, they sold an old candle of truth they got from the Castorian base many weeks earlier (in game time, and many years earlier in real time!) but had never used, and Thórsljón contributed the last of his Maradenne gold coins to cover the remaining shortfall.

Luthia and the party said good-bye to Melia, Luthia's mother, who has a date with Arandor tonight. The party returned to the Royal Inn, and found Lindir in the common room awaiting their arrival. When Yamirus asked him how he was, he said, "Well I'm a bit poorer after better equipping myself to deal with the sort of, oh, challenges you seem to attract. So far I've had a net loss for the voyage." Yamirus said, "A net loss?!" in surprise and dismay, and when Lindir confirmed it, Yamirus said, "Well, think of it as an investment." Lindir grinned, stood up, and joined the party. Yamirus considered teleporting right out of Maralig, but Elvira reminded Yamirus that they had never tried teleporting out of the city after teleporting into the city landed them, without magic items, in an anti-magic cell under Eastgate. So the party left Maralig, with the guards smiling at them, and went to their usual place to teleport back to the Isle of Aetna...

...where they arrived just in time to see Captain Kostas and his son and daughter-in-law, Psari and Thalassa, putting out the last fires on the deck of the Delfini. Fire had reduced the Delfini's sail to uselessness, and although Yamirus offered to try to put out the fire and began to wrack his brains for a spell that might help, Kostas told him that they'd already put out what remained of the fire. Yamirus asked if Kostas would need to repair the ship, but he said that most of the fire damage had been superficial and to the desk and its fixtures, not to the hull itself, but he'd need a new sail. Yamirus offered to teleport to a city to buy one, but when Kostas said they could make a new sail out of spare canvas in a couple of hours, Yamirus decided that letting Kostas make a new sail would get the party off of the Isle of Aetna faster.

Yamirus spotted the source of the fire--a dead red dragon wyrmling on the beach. Luthia got irate that Kostas and crew had killed the dragon, but Kostas exclaimed that a half dozen wyrmlings had come and flown around, trying to set fire to the Delfini, and Thalassa assured her that they hadn't attacked until after the red dragons had. Kostas said skeptically that perhaps the wyrmlings would not have attacked if Luthia had been there, but Luthia admitted that, red dragons being what they are, they probably would have tried to burn up the boat just for fun anyway, and that seemed to drain her of her ire at Kostas for killing a dragon.

The party learned from Kostas that once the first wyrmling had died, the others had fled, making a beeline toward the volcano known as Mount Aetna, still smoking from the last eruption (against the Surgeon General's warning). Yamirus said that with wyrmlings around, the mother couldn't be far behind. He worried that the mother might just fly a spiral search pattern out from the island and attack any old ship it found. Thalassa said that she knows the disguise ship spell, but that it wouldn't do much good if the mother red dragon would just attack the first boat she found. Thalassa wondered though how the mother would even know to look for a boat, and Yamirus told her that red wyrmlings, just like Luthia, could speak even at that age and would just tell the mother. (Even hatchling red dragons can speak.)

The party then debated whether to go after the wyrmlings and confront the mother red dragon. Thórsljón had no particular desire to kill the wyrmlings, but loved the idea of going after the mother. Yamirus remembered all he could about red dragons, whom Luthia insisted were generally bad parents, unconcerned about the wyrmlings, and even if still present, as likely to laugh at them for flying around in all their scarlet visibility as seek vengeance upon the killers, chalking off the dead wyrmling as a life lesson learned by the survivors. Hrothgar though too approved of going after the mother red dragon. Luthia insisted that the red dragons probably live right in the volcano, and that the party would, if it went there, have to fight in the lava too, and how would Hrothgar like that?! Hrothgar actually loved the idea of fighting in the lava, and started trying to figure out if he knew a spell to protect against it. Caerwyn said that they should leave the dragons alone as long as the dragons weren't threatening the party. Elvira agreed, saying, "Gentlemen, I believe that discretion is the better part of valor." Yamirus said to the two Thór worshipers, "You know fellows, I appreciate your enthusiasm," but agreed that they shouldn't go after the mother.

Will the Delfini manage to get away from the Isle of Aetna? Or will further volcanic eruptions or a vengeful mother dragon get in their way? Find out next time!

    Hrothgar Reached 23rd & I Didn't Even Notice!

I just realized that Hrothgar has just a little more experience than he needs to reach 23rd, so I leveled him up. I didn't even notice on Sunday that his total experience had gone over the amount needed to reach 23rd. I just noticed it today. 23rd isn't a big level for him. As 23 is a prime number it doesn't get a feat (every three levels) or an ability score increase (every four levels), and 12th level of thunder priest doesn't get a bonus epic feat either. It does get a +1 on damage reduction and another use of rage per day, but I see that I already added the damage reduction accidentally, and the 5th use of rage per day isn't really all that useful when you're adventuring outside. When you get in the Labyrinth, however, it could prove useful.

Speaking of proving useful in the Labyrinth, Elvira suggests that she and Yamirus work on ways they can be useful without using up powerful spells on regular and undead minotaurs of lesser power. She thinks that offensive wands and perhaps staffs might prove useful, as might good old missile weapons. :-)

+500 Elvira for thinking about not using up powerful spells on many weak minions
+500 Elvira for suggesting the use of offensive wands and staffs, and even missile weapons (Elvira is only 2474 from 23rd!)
    -------------------------------------------------------
*A winged monk pops out of non-existence*

A rod of security would also be very useful. If you have depleted all your spells, you could have the whole party rest safely in the rod's "bubble".

    *Pops back into non-existence*

    :-)
    -------------------------------------------------------
Hey, Keith, that's a great idea! The rod of security costs only 66,000 gp. Hey, in case you think you might return to play Onigato one day, you can give him the following:

+500 xp for popping in and out of existence (or for having his ghost whisper advice into a party member's ear, in which case, in whose ear would he whisper?)
+500 for suggesting the rod of security
    ---------------------------------------------------------
I would pick Luthia(sp) because a) it would freak her out and b) she'd love to take full credit for the idea. hehehehehe

    Keith
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    Hee hee! Very good.

    another +500 xp Onigato's ghost
    ---------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I forgot to award some experience for last session:

+400 Yamirus for suggesting that Luthia and Thórsljón fly pattern patrols around the Delfini

Yamirus said, "Luthia and TL, maybe you two, as fast fliers, should fly a pattern patrol around the Delfini while the captain and crew make a new sail."

Thórsljón exclaimed, "Ja! Thaat sounds like a góth idea! Thaat vay if the móthir drakr koms ve vil see it immediately and I vil be able to attack it before it gets to the Delfini!"

Luthia thought that the idea of flying a pattern patrol sounded BORING. Sure, it had been fun when she was just a wyrmling, but now that she had GROWN she thought it sounded dull, dull, desperately dull, like something that would suit a chartered accountant who thought that an anteater was a lion. A nap, frankly, sounded more inviting than flying yet ANOTHER pattern patrol. Round and round the Delfini she goes, and when she gets to sleep next, only Bahamut knows. BoRING!

Then the image of Onigato, the half-celestial Nintonese monk who'd never bothered to tell the party his mission so that they wouldn't know to look for the princess of Cathos in the Labyrinth and unknowingly might leave her behind when they rescued Yamirus' mother, in the unlikely event that Asterios THE Minotaur didn't just gore them all to death, came to Luthia's mind. Now THERE was someone dull enough to fly eternal pattern patrols, Luthia thought. Onigato was BORN to fly dull pattern patrols. For some reason the thought of Onigato gave her an Idea about how to distract Yamirus, who had a kind heart and a genius intellect, but only human wisdom after all, from talk of yet another dull, dull, desperately dull pattern patrol.

"Hey, Yami!" started Luthia brightly in the Annonid language, so that all the party members would understand. "I have another brilliant idea! Why don't we buy a rod of security? It's a neat magic item that opens an extra dimensional space where you can sleep, er, rest and heal up. I don't know for sure if it will work inside the Labyrinth, but we could give it a try. We won't be able to open the Daern's Instant Fortress inside there any more than we can open it on the Delfini. It costs only, oh, 'bout 82,500 gold seas. You and I could teleport back to Maralig to buy one, and maybe take Lindir with in case we have any trouble finding one. He's a good merchant and has Connections," she concluded a bit grandiosely, hoping to flatter Lindir into supporting her idea. Luthia repeated herself in Graikoí for the benefit of Captain Kostas, Psari and Thalassa. After all, it wasn't their fault that humans didn't have racial memories or live long enough to remember the same language after a few generations. And they really should benefit from her brilliant idea too.

Lindir smiled knowingly. "Sure, I'll go back with you if you'd like," replied Lindir in Annonid. "A rod of security does sound like a good idea, and if you can't find one, I'm sure I can track one down in Maralig."

"Ja!" Exclaimed Thórsljón in Annonid. "Vhy don't thu three go back and buy a rod, if ve haf the money of course, while I fly a patrol. Carvyn, Hrothgar and Elvira can stay vith or near the Delfini, and back me up if I get into a fight vith the móthir drakr. Ha, it vould be a glorious battle--me against the móthir drakr!" he concluded, lifting his great hammer over his head triumphantly. "Do not vyrry, Yamirus. I vil remain vithin range of Elvira's lang-distance spells, like delayed blast acidball," Thórsljón said with a smile, looking at Yamirus. "Those spells haf a langer reach than even a huge drakr's breath veapon."

Elvira asked in Annonid, "Is it wise, gentleman--and lady," she said with a nod toward Luthia, "to be out of contact with half the party when we think the mother dragon might come seeking vengeance? What do you think, Caerwyn?"

Psari looked up from his work on the new sail. He said in Annonid, "My wife doesn't like to brag, but since we got attacked by dragons while you were gone, and we had no way to contact you, she learned how to cast a sending spell. When the six wyrmlings came, we saw them coming long before they got here, and we'd probably see a much larger mother even longer before it arrived. If she comes, Thalassa can cast a sending to let you know." Thalassa's olive complexion turned a bit darker, and she didn't look up from her work on the sail, but she nodded in agreement.

"Bah, vhy don't ve just go kill the móthir in the lava and then go get the rod?!" exclaimed Hrothgar, impatient with all the strategizing. "If ve kill her first, then ve don't haf to vyrry about her coming vhen half the party has teleported avay. Ve can use protection from fire to protect us, and Elvira can cast a fly spell on those who cannot fly or cast the spell themselfes." [Note: that's a deliberate misspelling of "themselves" to show Hrothgar using a harder sound when he says the word.]

Luthia felt surprised and embarrassed that Psari and Thalassa could understand and speak Annonid. She was glad she hadn't said what she was thinking. Her mother HAD warned her never to underestimate humans. She was secretly happy that Hrothgar had mentioned his particularly-boneheaded idea to fight in the lava again, as it would surely distract anyone who might have noticed how much more ignorant she thought the Graikoí fisherfolk were than they really were.

    +500 Thalassa
    +1,000 Psari (WOO-HOO! Psari reached 16th level!)
    +1,500 Hrothgar
+2,000 Elvira (Woot! Elvira is only 474 from 23rd level!)
    +2,500 Thórsljón
    +3,000 Luthia

    Caerwyn Responds, Then Others

Caerwyn responded, "The Rod of Security sounds like a good idea. Based on past experiences, It is always a bad thing to split up the party. We learned it the hard way back in the Wildwood with the giants. As far as going after the dragons in the lava, we don't know what type of defenses are there. Obviously the lava is a good defense. What do we know about red dragons? Also, I can provide two fly spells a day if needed. They won't last as long as those that Elvira can cast, but may be useful as it may free up Elvira to use some offensive spells."

    Caerwyn
+500 being his usual quiet self
    +500 responding to Elvira's question
+500 addressing the rod of security
+500 not splitting up the party
+500 referring back to the party's experience with fighting the giants outside the Castorian Wildwood base
+500 asking about red dragons and their defenses
+500 noting that lava makes a good defense for fire creatures against non-fire creatures
+500 offering up to two fly spells per day if the party does need to fly to the volcano
+500 noting that while his fly spells won't last as long as Elvira's, they could free up Elvira to cast more offensive spells
+500 managing to say so much with so few words
Total Caerwyn 5000 (Score! How close is Caerwyn to 23rd level?)

Thórsljón replied in Annonid, "Ja [Yes], Caervyn, thu [thou, you] ert [art, are] right--the lava ert a very góth [good] defense against us." Laughing, he turned to Hrothgar. "Thu vill [will] find that thinn [thine, your] protection from fire spell vill last a whole 15 seconds in lava--18 if thu ert lucy. Vith thinn greater fire resistance armor, if thu ert raging and haf bjřrnn's endurance, thu vill find then that thu vil last another 50 seconds, 60 if thu ert lucky again. Vithout rage and bjřrnn's endurance, thu von't [won't] last more than about half a minute. Luthia, Yamirus and Elvira vould nei (not) last even half as lang as thu!" concluded Thórsljón laughing.

Luthia giggled, the three Graikoí sailors burst into laughter, and even Elvira could not completely surpress her amused smile. Hrothgar frowned as he listened to Thórsljón, and then scowled when everyone seemed so amused.

"Bah!" exclaimed Hrothgar in disgust, punching Thórsljón, who just laughed harder. Hrothgar continued, "Vell [Well] it vas [was] an idea anyvay. Vhat red drakr [dragon] vould expect humanoids and a silfr drakr to attack them right in the lava?! Ve could haf [have] taken them by surprise! Vait! [Wait!] I haf another idea? Vhy [Why] don't I reqvest [request] a miracle from Thór to make us all immune to fire for tventy [twenty] minutes or so?! That vill vyrk [work]!!" he concluded excitedly.

"Ja," agreed Thórsljón, still laughing. "That er [is] a góth idea. Vhy don't thu safe [save] it for vhen ve need to fight in the lava? Ve [we] do not vant to call on Thór for a miracle needlessly."

"Don't thu think I know that?!" exclaimed Hrothgar, punching Thórsljón again, "thu big, flying fire giant!" Thórsljón flapped his wings and laughed harder.

Luthia smiled, quite pleased with herself for completely distracting the party from the idea of her flying pattern patrols. "Well are we gonna teleport back to Maralig for the rod now, Yami?" she asked hopefully.

It occurred to Elvira that, fire immunity or not, the party probably wouldn't be able to see while submerged in lava, or breath either for that matter, but as she did not want Hrothgar punching her--not that she really thought he would--nor losing more face in front of her friends (as a drow she understood all to well the importance of saving face) she said nothing about the lava. She did say, "Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have little rush to buy the rod. While we travel on the Delfini, we would not want to leave her undefended at night even if we do anchor in a lagoon rather than sailing in the dark."

Captain Kostas cackled, "You got that right, little black elf-lady!"

    +500 Psari and Thalassa
    +1,000 Kostas
    +1,500 Luthia
+5,000 Elvira, Hrothgar and Thórsljón (WOO-HOO! Elvira leveled up to 23rd!)

WOO-HOO! Caerwyn leveled up to 23rd too!!

We've had to miss a couple of sessions because I'm really under the gun teaching six classes, three of them for the first time, including two upper-division classes. We've done a little roleplaying by email to help fill in the gaps. Here's the latest:

The following conversation takes place sometime when the party isn't trying to spell up before getting eaten by a vengeful red dragon, and when the DM isn't trying to prepare a zillion-page tax chapter to present to his students. ;-)

Luthia asked, "So who's gonna get the favor offered by Sisiutl, and which one should we get?"

Thórsljón replied, "Let's vait until right before ve go into the Labyrinth, and get Yamirus the 5-day +20 bonus to Intelligence so the Minotaur er [is] more likely to fail its safe [save] against Yamirus' spells."

Thalassa asked, "Wouldn't doin' the same thing to Elvira's Charisma make 'er better at blastin' the 'ccursed thing?"

Elvira replied, "Thank you, Lady Thalassa," at which Thalassa's olive-complexioned cheeks grew darker. Elvira did not indicate in any way that she noticed Thalassa's embarrassment at the compliment, but continued, saying, "Greatly enhancing Yamirus' Intelligence right before we go into the Labyrinth would serve us well if he has spells that can damage a god and if he can overcome the god's spell resistance. Alas the priestesses of the primary drow goddess kept the weaknesses of the gods from the general populace or even novice priestesses."

Hrothgar asked, "Vhat aboot the priests of the other drow góths?"

"The priestesses of the other drow goddesses kept even more secrets," Elvira replied, the faintest of smiles briefly hovering about her full lips.

She continued, speaking at unusually great length for her. "Ordinarily I would suggest that we give a permanent +5 bonus on Charisma to Thórsljón to make his spell-like abilities harder to resist and to increase by 3 the number of times per day he can use his Feats of Strength feat [which he currently can use 7 times per day, meaning for 7 rounds]. ["3 be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be 3."] To survive the encounter with the Minotaur, however, and seeing as how Thórsljón has no enhancement bonus to Charisma at all, perhaps granting him the temporary +20 bonus to his Charisma, which would allow him to use his Feats of Strength an extra 10 times per day [meaning 10 more rounds, for a total of 17], would give us the best chance of defeating the Minotaur, or at least of keeping him at bay while we liberate Yamirus' mother.

Hrothgar said, "I say ve vait until right before ve go into the Labyrinth, and get Thórsljón the 5-day +20 bonus to Strength so ve haf a better shot at killing the Minotaur.

Luthia said brightly, "I like the idea of granting the temporary bonus to Yami's Intelligence, but Elivra knows a lot about magic for a humanoid, and she's right about lots of spells just bouncing off a Sherta. So maybe it'd be better to give me the +20 temporary bonus to Strength so I have a shot at hitting the Minotaur and doing real damage. That way the burden's not just on Thórsljón!"

Lindir said, "Perhaps we could give the larger, temporary bonus to Caerwyn for his Dexterity, so he could do damage more comparable to that of Thórsljón, which would achieve Luthia's goal of taking some of the burden off of Thórsljón while keeping Luthia out of harm's way. "

Luthia crinkled her little human noise in annoyance. "But someone has to stand up there WITH Thórsljón and take some hits, and I have the best armor in the party! If I can't hit the Minotaur though he's not gonna bother trying to hit me!" she exclaimed in frustration at humanoid obtuseness.

Psari, said, "Wouldn't boostin' Hrothgar's Wisdom grant him more healin' spells? I'ma thinkin' that yer gonna need all the healin' ya can get in there."

Captain Kostas exclaimed, "Yer all blind! Blind I say!" He cackled. "If the Winged Wonder here," and he jabbed his forefinger in Thórsljón's direction, "is gonna get right on up in the face of a god and froth at the mouth, ya'd better boost 'is Con, and wit' the big boost too I say, if ya be wan' 'im to last wit'out Red here," and he jerked his head in Hrothgar's direction, "castin' a mass heal on 'im ever' 6 seconds. 'Sides which, boostin' 'is Con'll let 'im froth longer, ifin' 'e don't die first, acourse," Kostas concluded with another cackle.

Elvira said, "It occurs to me that had not Luthia wished to seek treasure on the bed of the lagoon, and again later in the second lava tube, we might never have met the Sisiutl and gotten offered the favor in the first place. Perhaps we should let Luthia choose. Dragons are wise, and Luthia unusually so. What do you say, Luthia?"

Luthia beamed at Elvira. "Oh thank you, 'Vira!" Luthia exclaimed, as she clapped her hands and did a little dance of joy. She started to think about getting her Strength nearly doubled, even if for only 5 days, and being stronger than even Thórsljón, at least when he wasn't raging. She thought about ripping the throat out of the Minotaur with her very own teeth, allowing Yami to free his mother while everybody applauded her. The Graikoí people would honor her, and news would reach Maralig, where the King would agree to meet with her and take her advice to invade Castor to free the Volencians. Then heroes far and wide would flock to her cause. She would become Luthia the Great, Lord Luthia, THE Luthia, yes, my Preciouss...

Then she had a sobering thought. What if even while raging, Thórsljón could barely hit the Minotaur? Then even with the big bonus to her Strength, she might still not be able to hit the Minotaur at all. Maybe Elvira was right, and Thórsljón should get the big bonus on his Strength. Or what if the Minotaur hacked him or gored him to death before he could attack it? Maybe he should get the big bonus to his Constitution. Um, but Thórsljón was real fast, right? So he could beat a stinky old minotaur, couldn't he? And Care was fast too. Maybe he should get the big bonus to his Dexterity so he could do more damage with his arrows, 'cause he could shoot lots of arrows. Confronted with the having to choose rather than persuade someone else to choose her, Luthia found that the choice suddenly seemed a lot more complicated than it had a moment earlier.

She stammered, "Um, well I don't want to be, um, bossy, ya know. I mean, um, Yami and Care, what do you think?" she asked, looking around desperately at Yamirus and Caerwyn, hoping to get back out of the spotlight she had so coveted only moments before.

    +500 Psari, Thassala
    +1,000 Lindir, Thórsljón
    +1,500 Captain Kostas, Hrothgar
    +3,600 Luthia
+5,500 Elvira (Woot! Elvira is only 1,474 from 24th!)
