    Hunter: The Vigil

    Does anyone know anything about Hunter: The Vigil besides the White Wolf propaganda?

    In particular, I'm curious whether hunters are simply capable mortals, or whether they have their own sets of powers/disciplines/etc. From a brief skimming, I got the impression that Hunter: The Reckoning gave hunters their own supernatural powers ... not that the new game will necessarily have anything to do with the old, as the two Changelings prove.

    I think it will be kinda like the old Hunter or like Second Sight on Steroids, take your pick.

    At this point, nothing I've read really differs from Hunter: the Reckoning, if you played it a certain way. However, if I had to bet, I'd say that they'll have both together this time. Hunters without powers (but with powerful magical items, perhaps) and Hunters with powers (just not all that powerful of powers--like Second Sight, perhaps). They might even have supernaturals as Hunters as the highest tier. That would make everyone happy, presumably. So, I'm expecting this.

    They've suggested several societies, so that's probably how you get your stuff in character creation, by picking a particular type of hunter to be. Still, I really haven't seen anything to make me want to buy it yet, as I've got Hunter: the Reckoning, et al already. But, I'm still watching the White Wolf site for teasers.

    Has anyone bought (or played) this game? How did it go? How do the "Tactics" play out?

    Is Hunter mainly conspiracies and gear, or are there interesting twists or hooks? As someone who doesn't play WOD but is interested in running a game of modern-day monster hunters, would anything in this book interest me?

    1. They offer a lot of organizations to be a part of, if you'd like.

    2. You could play a "loner" type, but s/he generally won't live too long.

    3. Some groups have magic-like abilities, but they are on a level below the supernaturals, generally.

    4. You can play everything from a normal guy that fights against supernaturals in his spare time to a guy who doesn't believe in the paranormal to people who believe they are children of the devil, literally.

    5. I think I liked Hunter: the Reckoning better, but this book is written well AND could be used for NPC help for the STs of WoD games.

    Now I got this idea of nWOD: Vegas, where the casinos are Fae controlled and the Hunters (PCs) have found out about it. Sort of a Changeling/Hunter cross-over

    Slightly off topic but wanted to chime in. If you don't have them already, the Buffy/Angel/Army of Darkness RPGs by Eden Studios are an excellent foundation upon which to build just about any kind of modern-day supernatural game...especially one in the "monster-hunter" vein.

    I've also really had an itch to run/play in a game using Precinct 13 and playing the sort of "X-Files" type campaign where the PCs discover the horrible things that stalk the night.

    Yeah, I found and read the Buffy game (1st edition) not too long ago. (I also bought AFMBE.) It started me thinking about a "battle against the undead" sort of game, although with my own take on vampires, zombies, demons, etc.

    I might also want to move it to the Old West (possibly with PCs as ensouled "Dead Folks" battling the mindless/evil dead) or a medieval world (with PCs as a religious order assigned to slay "false gods" and assorted terrors). In both cases, magic, if it exists, is a slow, sinister, and perilous process ... unless you've already changed yourself into something not quite human. However, particularly in the "Godslayer" variant, humans have developed mundane means to destroy supernatural threats, much like animal control has special tools and techniques for large predators. I may also introduce a concept of "slayers", although perhaps with darker origins.

    Actually, I broke down and ordered a cheap copy of HtV, so I guess I'll see if Tactics and the special weapons mesh with my ideas.
