    Travel Time

    I found this:

    http://www.kolumbus.fi/antti.lusila/...galaxymap.html

    ...and about peed my pants.

It shows travel distance and time between one planet to another.

However, I'm not sure it's accurate.

For example, would someone give me an idea of what they list as the travel time from say Coruscant to Hoth would be? For my game, it would be around a week. But according to this web page it's just over a day.

    HOLY CRAP!

    THATS AWESOME!

See my house rules for the travel times I use. Since everyone seems to zip around the galaxy quickly in the movies the travel times I use are quick!

To more directly answer your question and using my formula. Traveling from Coruscant (Core) to Hoth (Outer Rim) you have to travel through 5 regions. The Core, the Inner Rim, Expansion Region, Mid Rim and the Outer Rim. Thats an instant 5 days, 1 day per region. Then roll a d12 and multiply that by the starship's hyperdrive modifier, on most "legal" ships the multiplier is going to be x2. This will give you hours. Then add the days.

So lets say you have a fast ship with a x1 hyperdrive modifier and travel from Coruscant to Hoth. Rolling a d12 you get a result of 8. 8 x 1 = 8 hours. So the trip takes 5 days 8 hours.

    Sound reasonable?

Traveling within the same region is faster. There isn't a day modifier since you aren't crossing any other regions. In this case I use the formula 1d10 hours times hyperdrive modifier. So traveling from Hoth to Tatooine in the same ship as above, would simply be the result on a roll of 1d10.

The thing to keep in mind is that for the average person a starship is going to have a hyperdrive of x2 or greater so travel will be much slower. But for the heroes, they should be zipping around the galaxy!

I'm actually inclined to make the travel time a little longer. It gives the characters time to 'learn' things, build droids, skill stuff, etc. A galaxy is a huge place.

Now, speaking of 'galaxy'. Do you subscribe to the picture's actual layout? Like that's the entire galaxy (spiral), or do you think it's more like a globular cluster? The reason I ask, is because there's only certain areas in our own spiral galaxy that could sustain life, the rest (core) is far too radioactive, and the rim is far too old and diminished.
I consider it more a globular cluster in that picture.

    I have no idea.

I try not to think about "Star Wars Physics" too much because 9 times out of 10 it never makes sense.

So I just stick with the map they give me. I imagine it not spread out like the map shows if thats what you mean, hence the quick travel times in each region. More like if you took that map and folded it in half so that all the regions lined up like this:

    | | Deep Core
    / \ Core
    | | Inner Rim
    / \ Expansion Region
    | | Mid Rim
    / \ Outer Rim

So in a sense the planets are closer together kind of. Does that make sense?

There were some charts in a few of the old WEG sourcebooks, but yeah figuring out nagivation times wasn't ever really an exact science. Spacial distance wouldn't necessarily give you a logical answer, because some areas weren't charted as well as others, so some places that were spacially very close to each other might take longer to navigate to than places that were well charted but several sectors or regions apart...

I didn't bother much with the details of it, and usually tried to make as good of a common sense judgement as I could. "Erm, well the distance you're going is pretty far, but its a well travelled route, so that'd normally be a 3 day trip on a standard x2 hyperdrive. Since you have a x1 it'll take you about 1.5 days..." I'd assign a difficulty number to the astrogation roll, and as long as it was successful, they'd get there in about the estimated time.

As Moritz points out, the "travel time", would usually end up turning into the training sessions, where characters are practicing skills, teaching skills to their friends, repair their blasters or droids or whatever, or trying to resolve a fight they got themselves into with one of their NPC friends...

Sorry it's taking me so long to respond to this thread. I'm still trying to do the math in my head. This and the economy thread. I'm really trying to figure out what I did wrong in both instances. The party was getting to places too fast and making far too much money. I think it was all my fault.
