    Umi,

Depending on how this IC conversation plays out Noxias may wish to perform a coup de grace on the unconscious dwarf or at least feign that he will do so (or maybe just talk about doing so). So please consider my post in #132 to be tentative until then. Where is the dwarf's position in relation to my own? I can strike diagonally, correct?

I realize that the Matchless dwarf and that Roszroon and Roti may be totally unrelated but, not sure if Nox has really thought about it.

Also, if anyone would like to object, feel free to join in the IC thread!

The plot thickens with the return of our 'good' old 'friend' Roszroon. I do recall she did some pretty awful stuff back at the Garden, unfortunately as my character isn't overly fond of grudges I didn't take proper note of them at the time...

Umi, sorry but I realized that the character sheet I sent you did not reflect Yrisz 3rd level re-training where she replaced Life Transference with the much better (in my opinion) Cure Light Wounds.

You can refer to this page for confirmation of that fact:
    http://www.penandpapergames.com/foru...ussion/page214

I have update her in the Character page to reflect her re-training changes, sorry.

That said, her actions are probably thus:

    Move: Shift (why not) SW
    Standard: Cure Light Wounds Zephyr
Minor: Look at Roszroon in baleful dismay.

    Hi Umiushi,

I apologize for missing the posting deadline. If you're favorably disposed to allowing a late post for Rogur's actions, one follows. If not, then I'll play it that Rogur has been watching the conversation before continuing his assault.

    Rogur, Round 6 (provisional)
    Minor: None
    Free: Reload sling
Move: No move. Use Stealth to hide from enemies.
    Standard: Sly Flourish vs. Roszroon
    * Rogur - Stealth *
    * Rogur - Sly flourish ranged vs. AC *
    * Rogur - Ranged damage *
    * Rogur - Sneak Attack damage *

    Dice Result History - [Hide]
    04-04-2012 06:32 AM
    Rogur - Stealth: 1d20 (3)+ 11 (11) = 14
    Rogur - Sly flourish ranged vs. AC: 1d20 (9)+ 9 (9) = 18
    Rogur - Ranged damage: 1d6 (1)+ 7 (7) = 8
    Rogur - Sneak Attack damage: 2d8 (1,7 = 8)

I think that's Matchless Gang speak for authority or the authorities. To put it in modern english Rosz points at Konstansz and saids, "Hand over the cop so we can keep things quiet for a few days and there's no need for a fight."

As I don't think any of us are so foolish to trust to Rosz's or the Matchless Gang's benevolence, the fight is probably still quit on....

Why does Konstansz appear to be cop-like?

I should let Cutopia or Umi answer this and cop might not have been entirely accurate, perhaps official might be a better turn of phrase. I'm basing all my assumptions on Konstansz's entrance description:

Her reddish black hair has been blown about and her skin is flushed, but she does not appear particularly winded despite having just been running.
Indeed, her voice is fairly steady as she says, "This building is under attack by thugs of the 'Matchless Gang'. Are you with us or with them?"

Impressive critical reading skills! I assumed thete was some kind of vulgar contraction of tiefling or something. I was prepared to say that your reasoning was a bit of a stretch but now i am not so sure.

Konstansz is an investigator, but more one of the beaurocratic sort. She generally wouldn't do the enforcing or arresting herself... more just the information gathering to build a good case for someone else to base legal actions upon.

---------- Post added at 11:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:59 PM ----------

Her technical title is rebus legothete, hence the contraction.

    Didn't they already attack us?
I figure a fight is pretty much inevitable.

OOC Post #10 for Acqua Alta Finale

This post complements the tenth Acqua Alta Finale main post. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Saturday, April 7th. The next OOC main post will appear by 11 am, Monday, April 9th.

Next week, I believe I will have more time to be able to catch up on some bookkeeping and working with some of the PCs that I had been putting off, previously.

The dwarf fell one square south of Roszroon's current position on this map, so out of Noxias's reach.

In general, diagonal squares are considered to be just as adjacent as two squares that share a side. Sometimes, hard corners will work to generate cover or preempt diagonal movement.

Coups de grace have similar alignment considerations as the treatment of prisoners.

Feigning a coup de grace has the same requirements as a coup de grace for it to be convincing, but instead of a strike, a Bluff Check is made.

As can be seen below, there's no difficulty accepting Rogur's round six actions today. I am of course a few hours late with my own posting period, this time. For completely different reasons, I wish to delay Konstansz's turn until the top of round seven. She is currently going last in the round because of her readjusted initiative from having her readied action triggered.

    Round Seven Summary

    Yrisz (Initiative Count 27)
Expended: sun rod, 2 healing potions, Cure Light Wounds, Healing Word (encounter - once), 1 healing surge
    Hands Free: one
Held: everburning torch, holy symbol (worn)
    Status: non-lethal attacks
    4 temporary hit points

Move Action: shift southwest. (Cost 1; shift - SW.)

Standard Action: cast Cure Light Wounds on Zephyr. (Melee Touch targeting Zephyr, who heals 12 hit points.)

    Rogur (Initiative Count 26)

Expended: 7 crossbow bolts, 22 sling bullets, 1 healing surge
    Hands Free: one
    Held: sling
    Status: total concealment, non-lethal attacks
    4 temporary hit points

    Free Action: reload sling

Move Action: hide from enemies. (Rogur is trying to hide.)

Standard Action: shoot Roszroon with a Sly Flourish. (Ranged Sling vs. AC with Cover and Combat Advantage at distance 3 - hits. Roszroon loses Battle Vigor and her temporary hit points and takes 8 points of damage. Rogur is no longer hiding.)

    Marc (Initiative Count 13)
    Expended: none
    Hands Free: one
    Held: longsword
    Status: non-lethal attacks
    18 points of damage
    1 temporary hit point

Move Action: Marc is already adjacent to Roti.

Minor Action: issue a Divine Challenge to Roti. (Close Burst at distance 1. Roti is marked.)

Standard Action: attack Roti. (Bolstering Strike. Melee Heavy Blade vs. AC - hits. Roti takes 9 points of damage. Marc gains 1 temporary hit point.)

End of Turn: Roti remains marked.

I have Marc's damage from a Bolstering Strike as 1d8+3. If the +8 isn't simply a typo, let's discuss how we came to our respective numbers.

    Zephyr (Initiative Count 9)
Expended: rope, sun rod, Acid Orb (encounter), Action Point (encounter - none remaining), Arcane Prodigy (encounter), Escalating Violence (encounter), Flame Spiral (encounter), Life Thane Rage, Roar of Triumph (encounter), Savage Growl (encounter), Second Wind (encounter), 2 healing surges
    Hands Free: none
    Held: heavy war pick
Status: non-lethal attacks, Rage of the Life Thane, Savage Growl, marked (Roti)
    9 points of damage

Start of Turn: Second Wind effect ends.

Move: shift southeast. (Cost 1; shift - SE.)
Roti's Immediate Interrupt (trigger - Zephyr shifts from a threatened square) Combat Challenge. (Melee Basic Heavy Blade vs. AC - hits. Zephyr takes 10 points of damage.)

Standard Action: Life Thane Rage versus Roti. (Melee Pick vs. AC - hits. Roti is bloodied by 22 points of damage. Zephyr spends a healing surge and regains 12 hit points.)
Rage of the Life Thane: until the rage ends, any ally who starts his or her turn within 3 squares of Zephyr gains 3 temporary hit points.
Thaneborn Triumph: the next attack roll against Roti gains a +3 bonus.

Free Action: Savage Growl (trigger - Zephyr hits but doesn't down an enemy) Roti is now marked by Zephyr.

Free Action: spend an action point.

Standard Action: strike at Roti. (Melee Pick +3 vs. AC - hits with Savage Growl. Roti takes 17 points of damage.)
Howl of Fury (Close Blast 3. Thugs #8 and #11 are downed by 6 points of thunder damage.)

    Noxias (Initiative Count 6+)
    Expended: Shield
    Hands Free: one
    Held: staff
    Status: sustaining Flaming Sphere
    3 temporary hit points

Start of Turn: Noxias gains 3 temporary hit points from Zephyr's Life Thane Rage.

    Minor Action: sustain Flaming Sphere.

Move Action: navigate flaming sphere west of Roti. (Cost 6; normal - 2xE, SE, S, SW, NW.)

Standard Action: attack Roti with the flaming sphere. (Melee Fire vs. Reflex - hits. Roti is slain by 11 points of fire damage.)

End of Turn: the Shield Spell ends.

Matchless Gang Thug #7's Initiative Count set to 6
#7- Matchless Gang Thug (Initiative Count 6)
    Expended: 2 quarrels
    Held: crossbow
    Status:

Move Action: dart across the room. (Cost 5; normal - 5xW.)

    Minor Action: reload crossbow.

Standard Action: shoot at Noxias. (Ranged Crossbow -2 vs. AC - misses by 2.)

    S - Roszroon (Initiative Count 6-)

    Expended: Bull Charge
    Held: light shield, mace
Status: Battle Vigor, Rain of Steel, Shielded Sides
    15 points of damage
    8 temporary hit points

Start of Turn: Roszroon takes 7 points of fire damage.

Minor Action: Rain of Steel. (Enemies who start their turn adjacent to Roszroon take damage.)

Standard Action: take a huge swing at Zephyr. (Bull Charge. Melee Mace vs. Fortitude - hits. Zephyr takes 7 points of damage, is pushed E, and marked. Roszroon shifts NE and attacks again.)
Secondary Attack: Roszroons slams her mace down on Zephyr. (Melee Mace vs. Fortitude - misses by 2. Roszroon gains 8 temporary hit points and Battle Vigor.)

Minor Action: Shielded Sides. (Roszroon's defenses increase, and she does not grant combat advantage from being flanked.)

    T - Roti (Initiative Count 5+)

    Expended:
    Held: light shield, long sword
    Status: dead
    59 points of damage

    No Actions.

#11 - Matchless Gang Thug (Initiative Count 5)

    Expended: 1 quarrel

#10 - Matchless Gang Thug (Initiative Count 4)

    Minor Action: reload crossbow

    Held: javelin
    Status:

    Move Action: stand up.

Standard Action: throw javelin at Noxias. (Ranged Heavy Thrown Spear -5 vs. AC at distance 7 - misses by 7.)

Minor Action: wield a new javelin

#8 - Matchless Gang Thug (Initiative Count 2)

    Expended: javelin
    Held: javelin
    Status: unconscious
    6 points of damage

    No Actions

#6 - Matchless Gang Thug (Initiative Count 1+)
    Expended: 2 sling bullets
    Held: sling
    Status:

    Move Action: stand up.

Standard Action: shoot slingshot at Noxias. (Ranged Basic Sling -5 vs. AC at distance 7 - misses by 14.)

    Free Action: reload.

Due to the change of initiative order that occurs on a triggered readied action, Konstansz presently goes last with an initiative count of 1. I would rather she skip this round and go first in Round Eight with an initiative count of 28.

It is fine, but shouldn't I know the conditions of a mark when "marked"? I.e. if I was a fighter and I had combat challenge on a baddy, they would know "shift or die."

I had to shift to get into position, but I am just curious if I get to know the conditions of the mark so they can be avoided.

In any case, I guess Roti is already unconscious?

Well... Let's give ol' Ros a recuperating strike

Std: recuperating stk vs. Ros AC

    * recuperating stk vs. AC *

    Tentatively

    Nox's Turn

    Minor: Sustain
Standard: Thunderwave vs. Roszroon, hopefully this will avoid the rain of steel. If hit, should move Roszroon 3 SW adjacent to 10.
Move: Sphere Adjacent to wherever Roszroon ends up
    Free: Use action point
    Standard: Sphere attack Roszroon

Let me add some rolls in my next edit after I double check some stuff.

    * Thunderwave *

    * Thunder Damage *

    * Sphere Attack *

    * Fire Damage *

    * Adjacent Fire Damage 10 *

    * Extra Adjacent Fire Damage Roszroon (maybe) *

    * Extra *

If Roszroon is killed or unconscious before my action point then I would like to go after 10 with the sphere attack and damage.

Although the question of whether Zephyr actually violated his mark instead of simply running afoul of Roti's Combat Challenge ability is ambiguous, I am willing to provide information about what happens when a character violates a mark if asked in advance. I am hesitant to do so as an automatic inclusion in the combat round summary, as it is something that could potentially add to the already-extensive time involved in its preparation. Combat Challenge is an ability common to Fighter-based NPCs, so for this particular fight, it's safe to assume that Roszroon can do the same thing to opponents that she marks. In general, marking belongs to a class of actions that, while relatively innocuous on their own, can lead to any number of unexpected situations. Other actions in this category include granting combat advantage or bloodying an enemy. Regularly stating conditions like, "if you grant combat advantage to so-and-so, she will do massive damage and knock you prone if she hits you with her arrow," is really not something I want to get into the habit of doing. It may be a little cruel, but I'd rather have the PCs experience the results first-hand.

Roti is not just unconscious; he's dead.

Is there some kind of system where a mark if more than just -2 can be "marked". Maybe like:

    Conditions:

    Zephyr is marked* by Roti

That way you don't have to write a lot, and we can be aware that there is more to the mark than a basic one? Just a thought
