    Exit Visa, fifth session

The next game is scheduled for Sunday, May 20th, to begin at 4:00 pm PDT, with game-play to start no later than 4:30 pm. We will be meeting in the Pen and Paper Games chat room to conduct the session.

The in-game session will start around 1200 (21:00 local time -- mid-evening) on Wonday, 016-1102, immediately after the party has passed through customs at Zjazd Down starport, on Casimir.

Please note that there is no large-scale gravity control in cities on Casimir. Planetary gravity is 0.625 G, so make appropriate carrying capacity adjustments. (Your carrying capacity increases by 60%.)

    Synopsis
The group decided to accept Ilya and Omar as part of Armand's entourage. Lathander O'Toole was denied boarding when he showed up running a high fever and tested positive for an infectious disease. The voyage to Casimir was peaceful.

Armand's household staff at his noble estate in Kowal City have arranged for a chartered flight to take the group from Zjazd Down to Kowal. However, payment for the flight is Armand's responsibility, as well as for any transportation and lodging prior to arrival at Kowal.

Two unusual events occurred at customs in Zjazd Down. One of the passengers who entered customs before the group was arrested for possession of contraband. The passenger immediately behind the group is wearing a vacc suit.

    Current PC Roster:

    • Niles, playing Baron Niles Draconia
    • Palpatim, absent
    • Seadogstyle, playing Varian Vaughn
    • Yasul, playing Count Armand Hieliger
      • Expenses
        • TAS-Grand Roue Down, room service - 80 Cr, paid
        • Warehouse storage on Zjazd Down for 1 ton of pipes and fittings - 10 Cr plus 30 Cr per week, all payable in advance
        • TAS-Zjazd Down, accommodations and meals for five, one night - 100 Cr, payable at checkout
        • Chartered suborbital flight, departing from Zjazd Down Airport at 0300/017 (09:00 local -- dawn), arriving in Kowal City Airport at 0618/017 (04:18 local -- early pre-dawn) - 500 Cr, payable by 029-1102

Sunday's game session will coincide with the solar eclipse where I live. I will still be running the session as planned, but if the weather is clear then I intend to take three or four two-to-ten minute breaks to play around with my pinhole camera.

    Exit Visa, sixth session

The next game is scheduled for Sunday, June 3rd, to begin at 4:00 pm PDT, with game-play to start no later than 4:30 pm. We will be meeting in the Pen and Paper Games chat room to conduct the session.

The in-game session will start around 1400 (23:00 local time -- early nighttime) on Wonday, 016-1102, as the party plans the rescue of Omar MacMannon.

    Synopsis
A schizoid crowd of well-wishers and protesters approached Armand's entourage. Among them was Varian Vaughn, hoping to find employment with his old contact, Marlon. Niles, Omar, and Ilya turned aside and left the concourse, accompanied by the man in the vacc suit.

Outside the terminal, Niles and Ilya were overpowered, and Omar was kidnapped. Regrouping at the TAS hostel, Varian demonstrated his ability to flush out information. A contact revealed Omar's location: a mostly-unguarded, recently rented-out mansion. However, he left with them with an unexplained warning to accomplish Omar's rescue within the next two hours.

    System Overview (Falu/Sabine 0103-LGP-W-G)
Falu's primary is a relatively rare, white main sequence star. These stars are very young, hot, and large. This star, Magnus, is 75% more massive than the Sun, and has a 60% greater radius. It is still surrounded by the remnants of its protoplanetary disk, forming numerous gas giants, planetoid belts, and dwarf planets. In this case, there are no less than four hot gas giants orbiting Magnus at distances ranging from 0.1 to 1.3 AU. Named Punamalta I-IV, their atmospheres are all infernos, and they are consequently unsuitable for starship refueling operations. However, there is one Jovian-sized planet orbiting 40 AU away, a distance at which even Magnus is just a faint, dim orb.

Daylam (G00040B-E-R) is a relatively distinct planetoid belt at 1.75 AU from Magnus. It is home to a xenophobic, ultra-militant, monastic order, reckoned to be around 16,000 in number. Consequently, it is designated as a Red local travel zone.

Stora (Y570000-0-R) was apparently the object of some terraforming activity, the records of which were lost during The Long Night. It possesses a breathable atmosphere, though one heavily contaminated with dust, and at 4.5 AU, is right within the system's Goldilocks zone. Unfortunately, not a trace of water exists on its surface, or under it. At face-value, it seems unlikely that a terraforming project would advance to the point of creating such an atmosphere without at least crashing some comets into the planet to provide an ocean, but the idea that all the water of a planet could be "lost" after terraforming commenced is equally improbable. It is perhaps more fruitful to look at Falu for the answer, another completely dry world with an artificially breathable atmosphere, where the high technology allows for relatively inexpensive water extraction from the planet's crust. The Falu planetary government claims that Daylamites patrol the skies over Stora and mercilessly destroy any trespassers, but it is generally suspected that it is the Falun military who is doing the patrolling. In either case, the Imperium is filled with local anomalies, and it is not curious enough about this one to press the issue. On account of the danger, Stora is also designated a Red local travel zone.

Beyond 5 AU, the remains of the protoplanetary disk are very much in evidence: plains of dust interspersed with stellar ring systems. There is a distinct planetoid belt at 20 AU that has cleared its local orbit of dust. This belt is named Koppar (Y000000-0), perhaps a little too hopefully. It is unexploited, and because historical survey results indicate that it is very poor in economically useful minerals, it is likely to remain so.

Koppar marks the dividing line between rocky celestial bodies and icy celestial bodies in the system. The informal outer bounds of the system occurs at 40 AU, where, as noted previously, the gas giant Dalecarlia orbits and has cleared away the ice and dust. Dalecarlia has one moon, a giant, slushy specimen with a very thin and frigid atmosphere named Siljan (Y722000-0).

Except as noted, the Falu system is a Green travel zone.

World Overview (Falu A250839-E De, Po)
Falu itself is 3.8 AU distant from Magnus, unfortunately a little too close to be thought of as within the habitable zone of the star. Temperatures at the equator can reach the boiling point of water, and consequently its cities huddle together at the two poles.

The planet is moon-sized, actually much smaller than Siljan, the system's one moon. It is a mere 3040 km in diameter. The atmosphere is breathable, if thin, but there is no water to be had outside of the cities.

Falu's population is 126 million, and ninety percent of them live in the polar cities. The rest lurk around the edges of the arctic zones to escape the world's repressive government, the Commerce Council. The Commerce Council prioritizes economic activity beyond all other considerations, generating a great deal of wealth, but doing so in a stifling environment. Although the interior of starships remain sacrosanct, the transportation or possession of any weapon, even a large knife, on the planetary surface, is strictly prohibited.

Falu boasts a top-rated starport, Paviland. Paviland Down, on the north pole, doubles as the planetary capital. The difference in policies between Paviland Down and the rest of Falu creates a huge black market. It would not be an exaggeration to call Paviland Down a smugglers' paradise. With that high of a concentration of people who would ignore planetary laws, a significant subset of people who would ignore Imperial laws also manifests, making Paviland Down the crime capital of the subsector, if not the entire sector.

Paviland also houses the Falun System Navy. Easily the most dangerous, best-equipped local navy in the subsector, it would be more than a match for the Hegemonic Navy. The Falun Navy, however, keeps scrupulously to its own system, protecting Falu from the Daylamites and any outside threats. The Falun are under no illusion that the Imperium would allow them anything resembling the leeway that has been shown to Dragon's Well, given Falu's insular and self-serving policies.

Falu's technology rating of "E" indicates that it is on the upper level of Imperial accomplishment, close to the maximum. It is the most technologically advanced world in the subsector, and a good step beyond the highest technology available to the Dragon's Well Hegemony. Its technological capabilities were jealously safeguarded during The Long Night, even as its culture deteriorated. Ongoing research allowed Falu to continue to advance when it was reabsorbed into the Imperium, using its early technological advantage to bolster its economic strength. In essence, Falu has managed to reap a profit while giving little in return.

Ignoring the smuggling, Falu's trade classification is as a poor, desert world. Legitimate economic activity must involve the Commerce Council at some level, and the Council prefers to contract with corporations, not small-scale traders.
