Dispositio Diabolum

The kick-off to the Dispositio Diabolum campaign will begin at 2:30 pm PDT on Saturday, August 20th. Game-play will begin no later than 3:00 pm. We will be using version 1.3.b86 of MapTool.

The game will begin in the environs of Fell's Holdfast, in the county of Gwyren Ogleth, in the portion of the Bright Kingdom administered by the Kingdom of Elveald. It is early spring, close to four and a half years after the party recovered the Prism Ostracon. On this day, Chant is paying one of his frequent, extended visits to Fell, when Kathra and Orthrum come trudging up the unpaved trail leading to the keep from the south. Both are passing through on different business, but their paths crossed in the town of Eskaton.

Prominent NPCs of Fell's Holdfast
Depending on the character, these NPCs may be known personally (Chant), met in passing (Kathra), or the names have been heard spoken of (Orthrum).

• Billiaz of the Cordillerons - Former archivist of Norin Trugvad. By tradition, the archivist must belong to the ruling clan, so she left and took up residence in Fell's Holdfast when the colony was transferred to the Pteorthoirns.
• Ersius - An elf, and a prominent artist. He's worked on many notable buildings, including the Temple of Urien, in Eskaton. Fell hired him last summer to manage the decorations of the interior.
• Gastont of the Cordillerons - A dwarf, he works as a paid guide or bodyguard. Between contracts and during winter, he stays in Fell's Holdfast as part of the castle guard.
• Girain Sundrynice - Captain of the Guard. He was the leader of a mercenary band which was bought wholesale by Fell and settled here with a very long-term contract.
• Hurrog, the Grove Father - A goliath, he's the high priest of the Drywkirdara in the Holdfast. He was the settlement's priest from long before Fell's arrival. Normally, the Drywkirdara priesthood are all women, and Hurrog was just conducting ceremonies based on the local, syncretic hodgepodge. However, with the construction of the keep, Hurrog got co-opted into the official hierarchy of the All Seasons Church.
• Miraolf Skyarc - The keep's majordomo, he's equally famous for his noble surname and his pet panther.

Synopsis of Exordium, Third Session
From a tunnel leading into the great, underground hall, an insect-like stone golem emerged: a slaughterstone slicer. These animated statues were the primary defense of the outpost, but seem to have been compromised, or just berserk. Towards the end of the fight, a dwarf emerged from the shadows and slipped past Chant, to disappear into the courtyard.

After destroying the slaughterstone and fruitlessly searching for the dwarf, the party made camp. Thankfully, the bone pile didn't reanimate that very night. The decision was made to return to the depths. The one untouched room in the complex was the chapel dedicated to the gods Corellon and Moradin. The party also discovered a large collection of treasure, including the circlet worn by the leader of Norin Trugvad, collected in the council room, presumably after the fall of the outpost.

Finally, the party made its biggest discovery in the ruin: a partially mined-out lode of Lapideon ore, the condensed arcana of stone. The mysterious tracks that led from the outpost originated in this location. With no sign of the dwarf, and no further survivors to be found, the party set out to follow this trail that very obviously turns west, towards the Devilswood.

Synopsis of Exordium, Fourth Session
The trail seemed to be made by a vehicle unlike a regular wagon. It may have been something with massive, spiked wheels. Also, something had pushed aside minor obstacles with great force, allowing the trail to be nearly straight along most of its course. When it did curve, it did so very slowly. In any case, it led straight into the midst of the Devilswood.

After traveling for the entire day, the party encountered a group of sidhe, the belgoi, and a giant, armored centipede called a cilops. Hostile and unreasoning, they tore up the horses and then set upon the party but were outfought. The belgoi were known to be proud, musical wanderers, and far removed from this desperate, crazed mob.

The party continued into the middle of the night to put some distance between themselves and the remains of the battle. By now, they were entering the heart of the forest, further than any had penetrated in years.

The next morning, they found a dwarf standing in their path. Hambi, a senior member of the Pteorthoirns, whom Kathra had last seen when she left the clan holdings in the northwest, was the dwarf who had led the caravan that was forced to turn back...but had been reported coming to Norin Trugvad days earlier. He was in the company of devils.

First, he shouted at the party to turn back, all the while seeming more and more enraged without much in the way of cause. When he recognized Orthrum to be of the Cordillerons, it was then that he and the devils attacked. During the fight, he claimed to be the one who caused the slaughterstones to run amok in the outpost, but his behavior is more like that of a deranged lunatic than a bragging villain.

The fifth session of Exordium is still being scheduled.

The game will begin in combat with Hambi and the devils. Note that Hambi is definitely not the dwarf who rushed past Chant in the third session, unless he dramatically altered his appearance. That dwarf was a young woman; Hambi is a man of later years.

Some generalized locations described in the book, such as fey-crossing hamlets, may be used.

Hamadryads and satyrs may be used as written.

The Signs of Influence optional class feature will henceforward be used for Bards if the player has access to the Heroes of the Feywild rules. If the player does not have access to those rules, the class feature may be implemented at my discretion as part of the general campaign narrative.

Some of the "subclasses" introduced in this book may be used for new characters in the campaign:

• Berserkers are a subclass of Barbarians. Berserkers in Dispositio Diabolum may only take the Temperate version of the Heartland class feature.
• Skalds are a subclass of Bards. They may be used as written.
• Protectors are a subclass of Druids. They may be used as written.
• Witches are a subclass of Wizards. They may be used as written, but it is important to note that a character of the Witch subclass is not the same as a True Witch, such as Glatisant from The Autumn Knight.

The expanded list of familiars may be used by characters with familiars.

Feywild adventuring gear may be purchased. Please note any adventuring gear that comes from this rulebook for my ease of reference, though.

Feywild magic items may be used for the magical items given to PCs.

Not Implemented
None of the specific locations described in this book are applicable to my campaign.

I have some difficulty with the rules as given for the pixie race, so I will not be offering it up to player characters.

I am not happy with the "Character Themes" rules in the book, and will not implement them. Characters may not use character themes, nor may characters use feats, paragon paths, or epic destinies that use these themes as a prerequisite.

The character upbringing rules, while interesting, rely on locations that do not exist in my game setting and will not be implemented.
