    Worm Delve Main Post #1
This is the first main post for Worm Delve. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Tuesday, June 24th. The next main post will appear by 11 pm, Thursday, June 26th.

    Eight days after Midsummer
The party, as a whole, starts. Something soundless, as loud as any howl, echoes through the forest in your mind. Looking around, the physical forest surrounding you seems at peace, dank and humid in the still air, even as you imagine it being inundated by the psychic gale. Pradize searches too, as unsettled as the rest of you.

"They've done it," she says at last. "The barrier to the Montane is no more. We still have a day before we reach the Izzmarg Flow, another before we leave the forest. Let's hope whatever is coming passes us by."

Rogur quashes a moment of uneasy guilt. Haven't I already shed more than my share of blood for this damned place? If that witch Cresta doesn't want to stick around and do something to stop Katyrein, I can't see how it's any of our concern either. Realizing that he's using Cresta as a model for his own actions does nothing to quiet his unease, so he grits his teeth and follows resolutely after Pradize.

"Should we not be concerned about warning the people who are 'down river'? Were you not charged with preventing the Montane from shedding it's barrier, or was that what Katerin was supposed to be doing?"

    Worm Delve Main Post #2

This is the second main post for Worm Delve. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Saturday, June 28th. The next main post will appear by 11 am, Monday, June 30th.

"Yes, that is what Katyrein was supposed to be doing while she was engaging in the opposite activity," replies Pradize. "As for the rest of us, it was simply common sense. If I did have any obligation to warn about the Montane, I have already done so: over the past several weeks, anyone entering the forest was attacked. Most people have no idea what the Montane is or what dangers it represents, but everyone now knows that the forest has become hazardous and menacing.

"I don't rightly know what's coming out of the Montane, but I doubt it's something you can outrace. It may already be between you and Beilston. Cresta, Zephyr, Varis, or Sai might be able to warn them, but there's no time left for you to do so. Do you intend to try anyway? If so, let's say our goodbyes here. I don't think I will see you again, in this realm, at least."

    Worm Delve Main Post #4

This is the fourth main post for Worm Delve. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Saturday, July 5th. The next main post will appear by 11 am, Monday, July 7th.

The rest of the day is spent moving at a hurried pace. You stop for the night well before sunset, when Yrisz timidly suggests that with two days left in the forest, a forced march will only fatigue everyone should you encounter the menace that everyone senses is closing about them. She picks at her strips of dried food and stares at the ground that evening, until finally admitting that she's reached the end of her rations.

The night passes in tense watches. Every sound and every interval of quiet seems more suspicious than the last. Sleep comes with difficulty, and everyone draws upon their personal discipline to allow themselves to rest, save for Pradize. This is the first night she stays to accompany the party, and in the darkness, standing perfectly still holding her scythe, she melts into her black robes and seems transformed into a grim, inexorable presence. Yrisz, as she drifts off to sleep, imagines Pradize not standing guard but simply watching over her, silently counting down the minutes remaining in her life.

When dawn comes the next day as a pale light shining through clammy, humid mist, you hurriedly gather your belongings and break camp. While you travel, the oppressive atmosphere almost becomes unbearable. Making an effort to break the spell, you begin to speak in normal tones, asking Pradize to share her tales with you. She answers readily for the most part, but even she is on edge, and occasionally snaps or lapses into a sullen quiet.

The sound of rushing water around midday brings a sense of cautious relief. You hurry toward the noise and reach the edge of a fast, foamy river, perhaps a hundred yards from bank to bank. From that point on, you travel upstream, keeping the river on your left. By now, the fog has mostly burned off. Pradize indicates that the water is palatable, and you fill your skins again.

A few hours later, you are attacked. First, you smell them. It's not an animal smell, but a thick, earthy, musty odor that reminds Rogur and Yrisz of the tunnels of the Woerd. It is alarmingly different enough from the regular forest odor that everyone has time to draw forth their weapons and implements

Pradize faces away from the river, with her back toward Yrisz. For the first time since you met her, she grips her scythe like she intends to use it. Turning around, she catches Yrisz's glance.

"Don't heal me with your prayers," she mutters. Then they are upon you. Thick-legged, stalk-trunked, club-fisted gray, crimson, and brown mockeries of the humanoid form: they look like elongated, walking toadstools. Jack-o-lantern-like faces are imprinted on the mushroom caps that pass as their heads. They shamble into view, stirring up clouds of purple spores, broken roots, and decayed leaves.

Before Pradize even finishes, Rogur loads his sling and flings a bullet at a nearby foe. The bullet does no appreciable damage while the rest of the party reacts slowly compared to the swift movements of Rogur and Konstansz. Rogur manages to get several paces away before Konstansz is able to begin her attack. Their bodies move with a practiced rhythm without thinking as they try to flank and attack.

Yrisz is next to grasp the situation but before she can take up an offensive posture she is slapped with a giant ruddy orb. In obvious pain, she still manages to create an Astral Flare which befuddles many of the gargantuan toadstools around her.

Pradize spends a moment to asses the odds and decides to throw her lot in with the party rather than watch the fight unfold and return later. She casts a horrendous glance at a fungus and it shudders in terror as she swings her blade at it's comrade. Her unbalanced swing misses the mark completely; she fades from view with a last glance of warning to the cursed foe.

Meanwhile, Nox is beside himself with anticipation. It has been several days since he was last able to utilize his Arcane muscle. He spies a perfect location to retreat to which will allow him to direct his malicious spells. He recalls the words to draw forth his most powerful spell and places them on the tip of his tongue; not noticing a nearby monster blending in with the trees and grass. He jukes away from it's ugly visage, prematurely ejaculating the incantation of his Flaming Sphere. He reaches out, trying to draw back in the words, but the damage is done. The sphere springs to life in a clumsy mass burning friend and foe alike. A large gout of arcane flame splashes against the beautiful Tiefling, and some hits that sailor guy too. Two of the enemy wither into charred masses and are no more.

Rogur twists away from the flame cursing the moronic wizard. Drawing his sword he charges at the enemy attempting to support Konstanz and help her flee from the inferno.

Konstanz slaps at the flame on her clothing with no effect. She moves quickly away from the fire and flame, the rage building inside. She spots a nearby enemy and lets her anger fly cursing the plant thing with Eldritch fury.

    Worm Delve Main Post #16

This is the sixteenth main post for Worm Delve. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Saturday, August 16th. The next main post will appear by 11 am, Monday, August 18th.

There are two distinct groups of the fungoid creatures. Three of them look slimier and less colorful, with glistening streaks running down their bodies. The other four have trunks that shade to brown, bright red spots along their bodies, and have dark gills under their mushroom-like caps that exude dark, wispy trails of spores.

They all move purposely towards the party with their arm-like appendages raised in a threatening manner. As they do so, the spotted ones start to collect and throw clumps of spores into the ground around them. They quickly fester and sink into the earth. Moments later, other toadstool-like creatures, pale thin ones this time, rapidly rise from those spots.

Some of the newly-formed monsters emerge close to Noxias's conjured ball of flames. Those that do shrivel and burn away immediately. The rest advance on the party to join in the melee.

Pradize literally flickers around the battlefield. Like Konstansz, shadows seem to follow her movements, but in her case, once they deeply envelope her, she immediately emerges someplace close by, and retains a dark transparency for several moments thereafter. Her scythe, that she seems to wield effortless, leaves thin, nearly undetectable wounds, but where it lands, the flesh rots and quickly sloughs off.

Everyone had separated by this point, each moving to engage the enemy in their own way. However, as the creatures are joined by their reinforcements to fill up the gaps between people, you quickly come back together. Noxias and Yrisz finds themselves back-to-back in a clearing, while Pradize, Rogur, and Konstansz cluster around some stands of tall grass, seeking an advantageous position against the horde.

The toadstool creatures press the attack, and soon the three spellcasters find themselves mercilessly pummeled when they try to work new magic. Despite the beating which staggers him on occasion, Noxias stays on his feet, aided by one of Yrisz's healing prayers. He sends his flaming sphere circling around the besieging party, shooting jets of fire in their midst and burning to ash the weaker monsters as they spring up from the dirt.

As the fight continues, the first seven monsters prove to be hardy indeed. In front of your eyes, their wounds close and new, spongy "skin" froths up to replace burned tissue. This, combined with their utter silence, gives them a fearsome comportment. However, as Rogur determinedly tests them with one feint after another, he finds they do not fight as skilled warriors, but as brutes relying on raw strength and resilience. Soon, he is laying wounds upon them faster than they can recover from.

Finally, one of the creatures the first emerged from the forest lingers by Noxias's conjuration for too long. It loses its strength and stumbles, one of its sides roasted and covered with popping blisters. The creature bursts with slime and spores as it falls. The spores shoot forth in a cloud covering most of the melee. Glistening new buds and growth emerge to cover the wounds of the fallen one and it struggles to get back to its feet.

    Worm Delve Main Post #18

This is the eighteenth main post for Worm Delve. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Saturday, August 23rd. The next main post will appear by 11 am, Monday, August 25th.

By now, only the lesser creatures have been destroyed. The revived one doesn't last much longer, either. Noxias directs a jet of flame from his conjuration that scorches its newly-healed flesh, and it quickly succumbs. Rogur and Yrisz come close to defend him, while Konstansz and Pradize circle around to confront the enemies that close in.

This tactic seems to pay off. Konstansz flickers away in a flash of blue-purple light, and then heads into the trees around the edge of the clearing, sniping monsters with her black bolts. Noxias sends his sphere careening back and forth, torching the weakened and new-formed creatures.

The fight finally tilts to the party's favor. The reanimated creatures are as fragile as the ones that spring up from the ground. Soon they are being felled faster than they can recover. The strong ones are hacked apart by Rogur's blade and Pradize's halberd, as well as Konstansz's spells. The weak ones quickly succumb to Noxias's fires. Meanwhile, Yrisz does her best to keep everyone else on their feet.

A few more moments of effort, and victory is yours. Eighteen carcasses, including the seven original attackers, lie at your feet. The air in the clearing reeks of the smoke of burning spores.

Before evacuating from the site, Rogur prods around the bodies. The parts of them that weren't charred to ash are already deliquescing. He finds that they have no possessions, not surprising since they had no clothing nor so much as a cudgel to attack with.

"I'll keep this thing around a bit longer if you all would like to catch your breath," Nox says indicating his ball of flame. The strain is clear on his face but he looks like 5-10 more minutes of sustaining the spell will not affect his strength.

He looks pointedly at Rogur, "And don't you go complaining that I'm only doing it so I don't have to take first watch!"

    Worm Delve Main Post #19

This is the nineteenth main post for Worm Delve. Players' posts in either thread are due by 11 pm, Tuesday, August 26th. The next main post will appear by 11 pm, Thursday, August 28th.

"We won't be taking first watch any time soon, I hope," says Pradize, examining the blade of her scythe. Unlike Rogur, she hasn't made a move to clean her weapon, but it's managed to remain unsoiled, with its metal shinier than Rogur's sword even after his efforts.

"The edge of the forest is close, and once we're out of it, we might be out of danger as well. At least, we'll be able to get a good look around."

Rogur pokes at the slowly dissolving fungii and tends to his wounds--almost healed now, except for a shiny patch of skin along his right arm and a lingering ache deep in his bones. He works his jaw as if chewing something tough, and as the party mills around making preparations to leave, he ends up beside the Noxias. "I don't much care for wizards," he says by way of a conversation opener. His voice is low, pitched only for the Eladrin, and his eyes scan the area, looking everywhere but at the wizard. "Never had much use for them in any case, but I've had a couple of run-ins recently that...well, let's just say I try to keep my distance." He shoulders his pack and makes a show of adjusting the sword at his belt. "As long as you're fighting with us, I'll keep the peace, but if you pull one of those...tricks...again, you'd better be damned sure that nobody here," his eyes flick to Yrisz, then finally settle on Noxias. "Nobody," he repeats, "gets caught by surprise. Or else we're going to have more than a polite conversation." The man moves lightly away without waiting for a response.

Nox stands there in silence letting the dimwitted sailor have his say. Nox does not move as Rogur walks away. Without thinking he releases his hold on the fireball with a snap. At the same time Nox commands his mage hand to snake out across the ground. He points his finger at a mossy creeper and surreptitiously raises it as Rogur steps over.

Concerned with unfolding the mysteries of using divine light to heal the strange wonder that is Pradize, Yrisz miss much of the early escalation between Rogur and Noxias. The nuances of Rogur's ultimatum to Noxias finally catches her attentions, and though she simply watches, her bitten lip the only outward signs of stress, she seems much relieved as Noxias lets his arcane fire dissipate safely into the ether.

"Rogur, mind the creeper," she blurts out against the mage's instinctual action, and then slightly more calculated tone, "I do fear it might have a mind of it's own," she says giving Nox a clandestine frown.

Rogur pauses, glances down at the ground, and nimbly sidesteps the vine. With a nod of thanks to Yrisz, he continues preparations for the journey.
