Thoth, I agree with the Thing. Definately a must see, the other four didn't really do anything for me.
I say the original Exorcist. Oh the terror and psychological trauma that movie caused me during my indoctrination years 5 to 10 years old into Catholicism. I cannot watch it or any of it's sequels to this day...and I'd call myself a really bad Catholic - don't practice, don't care to.
Original Friday the 13th and Halloween. Remakes don't do either one any justice. Of course, seeing them while still just a kid, also makes a big impression.
OK, you can shoot me for this one...Valley of the Spiders with William Shatner...and Arachnophobia - I hate spiders, due to almost being killed by one when I was 2 or 3 years old...still have the scare over my left eye where poisonous frigger tried to suck my brain out through my eyeball. I'm better, but if they see me before I see them, I automatically see them being the size of my fist or bigger. A source of great amusement ofr my friends, particualr with Daddy Long Leggers.
Arachnophobia had potential but failed, IMO. Now, William Shatner's, Valley of the Spiders was a classic; i'll give you that. Original Exorcist was great too.
Here's another classic: Empire of the Ants http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075989/
Except for Alien, which is still perfect in my book, the other flicks i listed deserve a remake. I'd enjoy that. Of course, i wouldn't complain if they remade Alien in the near future.

Alien and the john carpenter's the thing were excellent and highly recommended. Hell House-roddy mcdowell movie is good, Halloween the original is also good. Orginal night of the living dead is the only movie that ever terrified me.
Alien
The Thing
Night of the Living Dead (Original Version)
Last House on the Left (Original Version) *shutters* I actually saw it once and that was more than enough.
Tremors (you never said it had to be scary)
Playing: Pathfinder
Running: infrequent VtM game
"I'm beautifully hideous!" - Sven the Nosferatu
Jaws
There is no path, traveler; the path is made by walking.
-Antonio Machado

American Werewolf in London is right up there on my list of favourites, as is Them!, the original Thing, and one of the best ghost stories ever made into a movie is The Uninvited (made in like 1934). Yeah, I'm an old horror movie geek, I liked it better when there had to be plot and acting ability rather than just special effects. And it was already posted but I have to agree with Jaws, it's consistantly rated in the top five best horror movies for a reason.

There is a "Greatest Horror Movies of All Time" Thread in case you want to look at it.
