some people enjoy feeling weak. others enjoy feeling powerful. that is what it is really about. the rules are changeable and meaningless without the context of an agreement between the players and storyteller. those that do not enjoy feeling weak, or challenged by working around weaknesses (among other reasons) will not like low powered low level characters. those that do not enjoy having options that set them above the rest from the start (among other reasons) might not enjoy playing powerful low level characters. others just want justifiable context. or something. ^^

if you want to be normal and challenged by your weaknesses, then go play a dilbert role playing game. this is heroic fantasy. every player character is supposed to be outstandingly above the rest of the world. then again, on the other paw, it can be a fun change of pace from the high-heroic-fantasy to start off as the normal person put in extraordinary circumstances which helps them rise above the rest.

instead of arguing about it, start up a play-by-post game here and lead by example!!! (and give those of us who aren't playing some great reading material!) =D

Or, as I said in an earlier post Niji, you could discuss it with your GM. In my campaigns, the powerlevel of roughly everybody is fairly close. A 20th level character could very likely get killed by a mob of 20-30 townsfolk, and I'm not joking.
Masaru Academy, a roleplaying experience you'll never forget.

ramblings of the lord of all that is chicken

in my foolish opinion, starting at "dirt level" is a humbling experience players need, when they get to higher levels, they may feel like gods come down from up high(actually am working on a concept for a game like that), remembering that even thought now the players are powerful, once they were weak, and that kid's mom that the players just raped and murdered in front of, might come back in a few years in a pointy blue star hat, with matching robes and dragon mount and long white beard.(he didn't age well)

well, i guess my point is that you may feel weak, but if you survive,(most GM's are nice so theres at least a 17% chance)you can one day be a death from above, and the near at will 0 level spells help raise your survival rate(by around 6%) now its a lot easier for a wizard to fight a peasant mono e mono without worries of being bent over and...enough said(before, if your magic missile did 2 dmg, you might be screwed, especially if that was your only spell)

level 1 is still dirt level, but I like how it seams peasants, experts and nobles have at least a chance not to be that kids mom, especially now that i don't feel its pointless to make more important nobles higher level, so you might find yourself in the above mom/kid situation, good luck.(watch out, the tax collector is a epic lv 20 expert/lv 7 Barbarian with a +5 mace of butt whooping)

well i feel like i just rambled on and on =.= got to work on that
