jpatterson replied to a discussion Into the Borderlands in group Late night random games
"Hope maybe good shelter and nice people here," mumbles Helgrond to himself as he adjusts his pack's seating on his massive shoulders and lumbers toward the fortified keep, his head drooping slightly in anticipation of rejection from others, even as he tries to reassure himself otherwise.

I'll make a character so there's one there, and will try to play if you get some signups. Map and all overall setup and threads and such look good. Very prepared. Good job, look forward to it.

I always twisted the D&D rule about, "That which is not permitted is forbidden," into, "That which is not permitted is allowed and we'll crunch it out when it occurs."

I agree with that - "sandbox" scenarios and campaigns can be VERY well written... Something a published writer with whom I am friends just suggested was to consider WHY when writing. Also, if it isn't germane to the plot/idea, don't put it in. Nobody cares if the hero likes the smell of oleander...

Stupid spells like this could save a village from starvation and earn SERIOUS reputation bonuses for a caster.

I agree that I also like "ostensibly" useless object, but ones which CAN be useful in the right circumstances. I gave out a pillow that a magic user could easily detect, though he didn't know its nature, so they kept it and traded it around and different people used it each night and eventually...

Looking good, I'll be interested to see how something like this works from scratch, start to finish. Actually giving a little info on each step or how you decide what to include or start would be helpful to some, I imagine. Like for me, I can do this too, come up with, maybe randomly, a basic...

Malruhn replied to a thread [Gear (General)] Deceptively useless Magical "Artifacts" in Campaign Resources
I introduced a bunch of "crap" magical items to a group once that whined and complained about how useless they were. Fast forward a year, the campaign ran its course and a new DM starts a new campaign. Session three, the biggest whiner starts asking the DM how much a Cauldron of Cooking would...

Interesting. I'm not sure how to even start considering the "odds" on this type of thing. I suspect anything deliberately generated is likely, at least more likely than chance, to have at least slight bias, both on the part of the GM and Players, though I don't know if there is often enough...

When you say 2d6, do you mean pool (each individual die is its own result) or summed (2+3=5)? I presume you're talking about dice pools since the rest of your question seems to lean that way. Here is the thing on individual dice rolled in a pool. They each are their own individual objects with...

Well that's a given, all those variables you mention would assume to be relatively even or consistent. And obviously most trials are done in any experiment using in the hundreds or sometimes thousands because probability does seem to "pool" in certain threshholds, and smaller trials (of say 300...

Wow, some people take things way too seriously. I could never torture my dice like that, imagine how poorly they'd roll afterwards?

This makes me want to roll every dice I have with an excel spreadsheet ready to record and find their averages. Which, I guess, means "yes" we believe in diminishing probability? If you have a record of the last 50 rolls of a dice, and are familiar with the results before rolling, and you feel...

I am also not a math whiz and never had a physics or probability or any classes that would be helpful in this example, but I think comparing a coin flip to a die roll is perhaps a flawed analogy because one is binomial and the other has a larger set of results. As you provided, probability is...

Does that actually exist? Well... apparently so. Interesting way to adjust the probability of a roll. But after a few bored moments of staring at d20's I think they're built against that type of thing. The 2 and 8 sides are next to the 20. It might be possible to use Dice Control on a...

    Hi Jenn,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Has anything changed with the times your available to play? Mondays and Thursdays might be hard to swing. I'm trying to get together a group that could play either Friday night, Saturday afternoon/evening, or Sunday anytime.

    Thanks,
    Tom
