Your comment just abruptly cuts off but that's a good sample of what you're doing. I'd agree, unless you wanted to add in something to introduce randomness, maybe just for an event that happens, simple choices are probably the best and that looks like a good start. You'd want to plan out your...

I still lean toward suggesting you at least looking at Wushu (linked above), if for no other reason than to get some ideas of how it approaches play - it is a free, very simple (for them, but really for the GM too) system with just a few main traits the players can create themselves and no...

What do you mean by "all descriptive solutions" or a "way to be not so linear"? I mean I can understand you mean you don't want it to be railroady, but teaching people a language through the medium of gaming has different rules (in my opinion) because like math is a universal language, so too is is...

Another way to do this is almost a Matrix meets Shadow World meets Call of Cthulu scenario. Joe and Jane average _KNOW_ that magic and monsters and stuff is bullcrap, impossible, AND just the stuff of stories. Those few (Neo and crew) that have been unplugged start out with the knowledge that...

I make my players roll LOTS of perception checks... just to keep them on their toes. If you don't, and then, from out of the blue, ask them to roll a check, they suddenly get mega-curious and it ruins any idea of surprise. By making them roll 40-50 a session, they then stay curious... or not... but...

The websites are great, but my favorite reference is always the local gaming stores. Just ask the geek at the front counter about local groups that play and if there is a gaming bulletin board where the groups advertise for openings in their groups. MANY stores allow gaming IN the store - and...

I've run both - and can say from personal experience that "fate" is nothing more than railroading on a grand scale. I run a sand-box style campaign, and that means that while I may present wonderful adventure hooks, it's up to the characters to make their own decisions and "choose their own...

I'd agree with the above posts. Not a fan of d20 myself anymore but my first purchase and game was '88 redbox, and having played AD&D2E, 3x and 4, I have to say I would prefer original '88 redbox with some better rules for separate races and classes and skills.

Hi there, very cool to see some game design around here. =) I like your start and overall the rules and definitely the feel, simplistic and reminiscent of, to me, 8 bit console RPGs like Final Fantasy and Zelda. One thing offhand is you could mock up a character sheet and maybe a list of your...

I find the second sentence hard to believe. The DAY BEFORE 4E was dropped, Wizards issued yet ANOTHER press release and spammed their forum boards with, "There is no new edition in any stage of development. Stop asking." Then, the next day, they had the unveiling of 4E. They ticked me off -...

That is certainly clarified. XD I do like Psionics in 3.5. I never really looked them over in 4e, though I know the Monk was converted to a Psionic based class, which I'm actually ok with. It's a better excuse to give them slightly supernatural powers than "Spiritual Enlightenment" so I'm all...

I used to do ESP tests to myself as a kid all the time. It started to bother my teachers when I'd pretend not to know the answers to problems, but rather be reading their minds to tell them what it was. XD I disagree about D&D doing psionics well. I think they could have been handled much better...

That's a pretty good concept. Why do you love Psionics so much?

    Hi Jenn,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Has anything changed with the times your available to play? Mondays and Thursdays might be hard to swing. I'm trying to get together a group that could play either Friday night, Saturday afternoon/evening, or Sunday anytime.

    Thanks,
    Tom
