As a player, I like to start from scratch and earn everything-obviously with 4E, that's difficult for defenders, among other roles. I like to know approximately where I am in the world, and to run oddball races (I currently have a Githyanki who escaped the Illithiuds who is Good.)
But any 4E game I can just be a player in would be fine. After over 20 years, I'm tired of always being the DM.
As a DM I also like to have the players start from scratch, (or at least use borrowed stuff until they get their own.) I like different backstories, and the PCs having occasional squabbles and not always being do-gooders (tho' my characters are always eager to help those less fortunate.)
I started D&Ding in the late 70s-I got a 2/2 F/M to start and the DM sent an Ogre Mage against me. Naturally I was killed and the DM went on the run the rest of the party without me. But I knew I liked the game anyway. I have a weekend group that's been playing almost every weekend since the mid-80s. We gab as much as we play, and have music playing (all kinds) while we play.
