Malruhn replied to a thread [Gear (General)] Deceptively useless Magical "Artifacts" in Campaign Resources
Indeed! I remember racing into battle with "cursed" versions of my character's main weapon in hand - to "trip" and drop it accidentally as I was almost engaging the enemy. Invariably, one of the folks in the enemy party would pick it up and attempt to use it against us. (insert insane giggling...

Mr. Al Gore - THANK YOU for inventing the internet. Stupidly simple problems have been vexing me, and because of your invention, people on the other side of the country have been able to lend their assistance! Okay, from Word, I was able to export my Primer as a .pdf - and went from 40mb in a...

Yeah, Adobe starts at $299... I'll pass on that because I'm cheap.

Okay, I'll put a ToC up as soon as I can get to it. Now for tech questions: 1. I use GiMP to edit pics - which leaves them HOLY CARP big in size. Even when I export them into .png files, they are still usually 12+mb in size. Is there a better way to do this? 2. I use CutePDFWriter to "print"...

Tes, are you looking for a "Table of Contents" type outline, or something more? I can do either/both, but will need more specific request/directions for the "more" stuff. Oh, and I will NEVER do a dump - once finished, it becomes public domain. I have WAY too much plagiarized stuff in there to...

Which is why I'm putting it all down on (e) paper. My Primer is in final edit stage, soon to be playtested, and my full phreaking TOME of the Known World is about 90% complete for the rough draft. After forcing myself to make 10-12 page descriptions fit into a one-column/half-page note, I've found...

Malruhn replied to a thread [DM / Player Tools] It's the Law in Campaign Resources
In my campaign world, each nation has their own laws. Some places are quite similar to others... and there are those that are WAY out there. I have them codified, and if players are smart, they can speak to the first guards they meet about the easiest ways to be thrown in prison or executed. I'm...

I disagree, Tes. I think we were endangered when the first modules were printed, but enough of us out there LIKE to wing it that we aren't that endangered. Or at least that's the reality that I'm clinging to...

Malruhn replied to a thread Why Fantasy? in Fantasy Discussion
I'll toss my ten cents in (because my two cents are free), and I apologize in advance, because I may piss some folks off. Playing games is a time sink - a total waste of time. This leads me to genre. I can envision myself in EVERY other genre out there: I can see myself with a hat and six-guns...

Oh. My. FLYING UNICORNS!!! The amount of butthurt is AMAZING for this - both in and out of game!! We have a player that recently was caught fudging dice rolls - he was a 4th level thief doing upwards of 60 points of damage on a sneak attack - even when he rolled 1's and 2's on his dice. When...

My GMing style can be harsh at times but that is life. I don’t like to waste time looking up rules, if it isn’t too important I will just make something up. If you feel that the players are always right and things should always go their way then you are the not the right gamer for my group. I have my own children and don’t need to cater to players that whine when things don’t go their way.

TRUE roleplayers deal with the situation that unfolds and plays accordingly. I use a cause and effect style of GMing. From a players point of view it may appear as railroading, but that is impossible because I tend to make up my games on the spot based on character actions. My usual game preparation is to simply write down an encounter on a note card. If the players lead the story into a direction of a card then I run that encounter.

About Me
Biography:
I prefer more details on your characters actions. I don't like it when players simply state I roll my intimidation skill. Play your character, not the stats. As a GM I grant bonuses to rolls done in this fashion. I've been playing RPGs for 10+ years and running them almost as long due to no one wanting to be the GM. The main game that is played in my group is Star Wars Saga. I have run EVERY version of Star Wars, almost every version of D&D, Ars Magica, Marvel Super Heroes, and have played in many more. I also created my own Transformers system that I would like to test one of these days. As of now the group is rotating locations from Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Naperville as well as playing PC games and board games as well. We are a diverse group that could always use more players.

Control - You must learn control!

Some GM/DM/ST Advice:

The Monolog

There are times when you are running a game, and you set up the great encounter facing the big bad evil guy and the guy is about to spill the beans on his master plans. Cliché to the max but it happens. Ok there is always one smart ass player that will want to shoot him before he is done. As a rule of thumb just ask to not attack until after the monolog. This will solve a lot of issues.

I've come to the recent conclusion about my own styles lately.

I'm a dice chucker and this is why. If there were no stats there would be no dice and there wouldn't be a game. It would only be an interactive story. During yesterday's chat room game Dan/Sabby was facing an angry mob of 38. For the purist role player he played his character. He decided to retreat back into the store front and talk with the people. The clues that were presented to him (getting shot at 38 times and only
