I'm a lapsed tabletop gamer looking for a new group to check out D&D Next / D&D5E!
I prefer games that meet weekly (I've found that it's difficult to remain engaged if sessions are too far apart), and while I have enjoyed playing pre-planned campaigns (modules, etc.), I've preferred games that are unscripted (and some of my best gaming experiences have been when the group is completely, totally off the "rails").
I gravitate towards playing Clerics or other classes with healing powers, but I'm willing to play any role or class that fits the needs of the party or the campaign.
My first experience with tabletop roleplaying games was D&D4E, which I played for a number of years with a wide variety of groups, players, and DMing styles. I played in campaigns both long and short, completely custom or totally by the book, with groups that remained consistent for years and those that struggled to have the same group of players show up two sessions in a row.
Eventually, I dropped out of a couple of groups because of a growing sense that my character's choices and actions didn't matter (i.e., DM railroading), and then out of my longest-running campaign because after several years, D&D4E combat was becoming tedious (at higher character levels, it seemed like every battle progressed at an interminable pace).
My goals as a player are to develop my OWN character and become a better person (there's something about gaming that manages to strip away all my pretenses and reveal what kind of person I really am—and it hasn't always been a pleasant discovery), and my goals for playing A character is to jump into the campaign with a moderately defined personality/outlook (and enough backstory to support that), and then discover how that character will grow, as events and interactions with the party begin to influence my character—sometimes the most surprising things will happen, and my characters will develop in ways that I never planned or expected!
