DMMike replied to a thread [Kobold Quarterly] Howling Tower: A Need for Speed in News
I like this concept: act quickly on your turn, get more immersion. Let me point some fingers though: if the game grinds to a halt on a player's turn, it's not just the player's fault. The GM is at fault for allowing the game to stop (not skipping over the player), and the RPG is at fault -...

DMMike replied to a thread [Kobold Quarterly] Pulp Sorcery: The Secret Art of Better Spell Descriptions in News
I was hoping this thread was titled, "Pub Sorcery." But I'm considering the implications of spells being listed in the GM's guide, instead of the player's guide...

I don't think the particulars matter anymore. Generally speaking most of the "story games" and "narrative games" et al are lighter in crunch. Simplification and focus seem to be the hallmarks. Traditional games tend to have more crunch and follow some standard design patters. This is not universal....

Yup. Make it explicit. Assume your audience knows basically nothing until you tell it to them. Weighing in is great for the players. In fact, the players should almost be always doing something more than playing just one character (because the GM plays every other character, AND adjudicates...

After petitioning the chat room for some bard-design help last night, this is what I came up with (yes, this is the entire character sheet): Kevwin of Bordrock, bard, level 3Attributes: P 14, M 8, MP 11 Skills: Defend (parry) +7 (+2), deceive +1 Perks: Toughness (18), heroic companion,...

No, it's not an encounter that's over in four seconds. The Four-Second Encounter is the one that you didn't plan, aren't ready for, and the players are already knee-deep in it. I'm turning it into a GM tool, and it looks like this so far: Just like the monster, anything you write up in four...

...which is...fluffy vs. crunchy? We'll break out of "cottage" when enough video gamers decide to cross over to tabletops. Then a gamer will be a gamer.

I think Indie is any game not published by one of the big 5; Paizo, WOTC, FFG, Steve Jackson Games and Pinnacle. Everything else is basically Indie at this juncture. Small press, small group, freelancers and outsourcing. Evil Hat MAY be coming up to make a big 6, but that would be more in sales...

Since we're in the 20-teens now, do we get a new "Indie RPG" definition? Indie RPG: an RPG written by 10 people or less who were not paid salaries or wages by the production company, during the production of the RPG. Or does "indie" just mean "independent" of corporations?

Outstanding!! I really dig GURPS 4e, I just don't have the patience and time for the fiddly-bits at the moment. But I regularly STEAL stuff out of GURPS for my other games. There's just way too much great info in there to pass up! :-)

First game crashed for various reasons. I'll run another one for any diehard Skyrim fans with the following solutions: - Game time determined by whole group, I guess weeknights are possible too. - Roleplaying/combat blend is flexible, but the default (at least in Skyrim) is 75% combat. -...

    1) Require them to watch your favorite sci-fi movie before the game starts, and be sure to give them a sizeable chunk of fiction to read based in your campaign setting. 2) Just go ahead and lose players, since that's why you're starting a new game anyway. 3) Star-Quake sounds cool to me, but...

I'm officially a supporter. I don't need compensation for my meager contribution - that would be akin to buying something, and then getting your money back with the purchase. So thanks for the great site, admins! Keep up the good work.

How many languages are there in Trollworld? If they're like Spanish, Italian, and French, then sure - not that hard to speak each of them. If they're like Japanese, Indian, and Norwegian, I'd call it a telepathic link.

AKA: Translation spells, how the **** do they work? (Which presents another possibility: what if hard-to-translate concepts -- or words the gods don't like -- sound like meaningless noise when the spell translates them?) As another data point, older(?) versions of Tunnels & Trolls allowed...

Yes fm, there's always that issue: what does the spell actually do? Does it create meaning in the recipient's head, so that he's hearing the actual words spoken -and- the translation? Does it give him perfect understanding of the words, so that no translation is needed? Or does it make the...

I always assumed that translation spells operated telepathically: they convey what the target means to say, not what he says. Plus, hey, it's magic. Even then, things can get strange if the target is non-humanoid, e.g. a sapient spider, or comes from a very different reality or plane of...

What are you looking for?:
I'm not currently looking for a group, as I found a great bunch of players through pen and paper. However, what I look for in a group are people who are laid back and just have fun with the game, some kind of role playing, and a DM who isn't so hard core and lets his/her players progress through their story instead of forcing them along it.
About Me
Biography:
I am currently playing in a D&D and Star wars Campaign that is on a rotating schedule. I use paper and pen to keep in touch with group members and as a way to find other players who might be a good match for our group.
