Something tells me it's a problem. Phone pile. All the phones in the middle of the table. First person to reach for one before the game is called pays for the pizza.

Eastern culture is pretty blood soaked too. Actions have consequences. I have always played that way. If you want a low/no combat game you neeed to offer appropriate conflicts. 40 Orcs with swords are not the deal. You also need to offer your players a satsifying means for resolving...

Agreed - the GM must be the proponent of non-combat options. And I think combat should have some negative outcomes too, like killing something means you can't gain information or you garner bad reputation. (Reputation rules, then?) But Western culture is against us: video games, movies, and...

Okay, how about an app that sets off an alarm anytime a social media app runs? The GM hears this, and knows to dock XP - or add an extra damage point or two to the next attack.

tesral started a thread [Campaigns / Adventures] Twelve Worlds Setting in Campaign Resources
The Twelve Worlds Setting It kind of grabbed my brain, moved in, and set up shop. None of this existed two weeks ago, ships, logos, descriptions, none of it. In short an outline for a space fantasy game. Still plenty to do to make a real setting out of it.

Role playing is a game, a game is a conflict. Ergo you cannot write conflict out of role playing games. If you don't have it you are writing poetry. Stories required conflict too. Now that said conflict can be resolved various ways. Combat isn't always the best. Yes, you can design and play...

Tools are as useful as you make them. Too much reliance on a given tool can flavor things and not always well. I'm all in favor of anything that make the mechanics of the game run more smoothly and not in favor it if gets i n the way. If index cards speed things up for you, do it. If a spell...

The Ancient Greek aphorism "know thyself" Is I think one of the wisest ever. Once you have reached that you have a handle on everything. Congratulations on reaching the epiphany of knowing thy gaming self. Sadly it is the journey that no one can make for you. Now you can make progress...

I've only read D&D 5 Basic, but really it's not far off from Red Box if you ignore some of the tedious prose. No feats in Basic; they're optional in the PHB, I hear. Skills are still there, but only Untrained (raw stat bonus only) or Trained (stat + level-based Proficiency Bonus). "Backgrounds"...

Lately I've found myself fascinated by minimalist D&D rules like "Searchers of the Unknown" and its worthy successor "1974 Style". I also like the d20-only philosophy of True20 and Numenera's Only Players Roll principle. All three have collided in my brain to create the following incomplete...

Yeah. We want details! I shiver to think of diceless games though. The dice are magical little gems that hold the answers to everything within them. Why pass up such cool, little baubles? One reason to skip them is that most dice rely on numbers, which require mathematical thinking instead...

Malruhn - good points. Some bad guys are all about death, but let's be real here: the only creatures that don't have an interest in self-preservation are undead, robots, and living things who are guarding something more valuable than life (like their kids). Don't let the thread name fool you, by...

"(Pacifism) is unrealistic and undoable in a game." Sign of the times, huh? The question, to me, is how does the GM keep things interesting? I've thought about a pacifist Skyrim game, but I'm not sure that it's possible. I feel like half of the quests require the death of a creature, even if...

Hm, I never really drank the D&D kool-aid. My introduction to RPGs was Metagaming's Melee and Wizard. Maybe I should dust off my old The Fantasy Trip books? (Or Dark City Games' "Legends of ..." series.) Realistically, though, RuneQuest and Call of Cthulhu are the first games I truly fell in...

I have very bad news: I'm almost done reading a Dance with Dragons. Which means that my only exposure to a medieval setting in which combat is a bad thing will go on hiatus. Have you played in or run a campaign that shuns combat? Have you seen players maintain interest when something less than...

So, I've come full circle. I'm back with my first love - D&D. This is my "why". It's important for me to share, as my hope is to provide insight into the mind of a habitual system-addict, manic seeker of the "perfect medium complexity depth because #feelings" RPG and perhaps help other...

Hello gamers: I'd like to GM a Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones style game on a weekly (evening) basis. Day of the week is pretty flexible - depends on what the group needs. Also, I'll be using a learn-as-you-play style to teach the game system, which is pretty easy. The game is very...

Spell cards: I wouldn't use them. I'd just use my character sheet. Playing cards: to me, these have a pretty heavy wild-west flavor. Which would be great in a wild-west game, but not in other games. Maybe I should just focus on the "kings," "queens," and Alice in Wonderland... More cards...

As one of my favorite parts of the game, modules need to be done right. Iíve cut a lot of subjective material from the modules chapter, and Iím hoping that whatís left is short and sweet. Each sample module is getting a makeover, and the rules module is complete, although I canít code the...

Welcome, fellow 'Zonie! This site has a chatroom that's great for online games, and the best way to get involved in the forums is to start a thread. I'm designing a game as well, and I'm a recovering 3.5 addict so if you want to bounce any ideas off me just say so!

What are you looking for?:
I'm not currently looking for a group, as I found a great bunch of players through pen and paper. However, what I look for in a group are people who are laid back and just have fun with the game, some kind of role playing, and a DM who isn't so hard core and lets his/her players progress through their story instead of forcing them along it.
About Me
Biography:
I am currently playing in a D&D and Star wars Campaign that is on a rotating schedule. I use paper and pen to keep in touch with group members and as a way to find other players who might be a good match for our group.
