The games I run have seem to have a tinge of Lovecraftian horror to them. My favorite type of fantasy game would be to take REH's Conan and Hyborian Age, The Black Company, Thieves World, Lovecraft and a smidge of D&D, put it all in a blender mix and pour out. I like grim and gritty styles of play. In modern I like to have a X-Files, Hellboy, Torchwood feel to them.
A good candidate for my games would include the willingness to participate in the campaign by doing the required reading and doing the assignments that are given out the the players. I don't require a lot from my players but if I'm going to put effort in making the campaign and running it, I would at least like players who are vested in the world by creating a small character background and keeping a small journal or notebook about the campaign. A big plus is having at least read some of the mentioned novels or authors.
What ticks me off is players that show up and have no clue about what happened the last week, or players that no show or are late without giving some notice.
I've been playing since 1980 and since that time I've mostly been a game master. I do enjoy a break now and again and taking a turn at being a player, but the lure of game master is to strong for me to stay away for long.
RPGs that I've played or am familiar with are Spycraft 2.0, Fantasy Craft, D&D all lines since 1st edition, Rolemaster, Rifts, Shadowrun, Battletech, Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, Conan TSR & d20, Thieves World d20, The Black Company d20, Paranoia original & d20, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninjas & Superspies, Star Trek FASA, Alternity all lines, Babylon 5 d20, Traveller, and prolly a bunch of other titles that I've forgotten.
Card games that I play - Killer Bunnies, Munchkin (all lines), Lunch Money, Star Fleet Battles, Stargate CCG, Spycraft CCG, Inn-Fighting, Girl Genius and others.
Board Games - Tannhauser, Arkham Horror (all expansions), Tide of Iron, Last Night of Earth, and a bunch of other titles.
Miniature Games - D&D minis, Federation Commander, Axis & Allies, Babylon 5, BattleTech and others.
My favorite game - Fantasy Craft. This is the game system to end all game systems for me, in all the years I've played, ran or tinkered w/ the rules this game system is MY One Ring. I think it does everything the way I want things to run.
