Another way to do this is almost a Matrix meets Shadow World meets Call of Cthulu scenario. Joe and Jane average _KNOW_ that magic and monsters and stuff is bullcrap, impossible, AND just the stuff of stories. Those few (Neo and crew) that have been unplugged start out with the knowledge that...

I make my players roll LOTS of perception checks... just to keep them on their toes. If you don't, and then, from out of the blue, ask them to roll a check, they suddenly get mega-curious and it ruins any idea of surprise. By making them roll 40-50 a session, they then stay curious... or not... but...

The websites are great, but my favorite reference is always the local gaming stores. Just ask the geek at the front counter about local groups that play and if there is a gaming bulletin board where the groups advertise for openings in their groups. MANY stores allow gaming IN the store - and...

I've run both - and can say from personal experience that "fate" is nothing more than railroading on a grand scale. I run a sand-box style campaign, and that means that while I may present wonderful adventure hooks, it's up to the characters to make their own decisions and "choose their own...

I find the second sentence hard to believe. The DAY BEFORE 4E was dropped, Wizards issued yet ANOTHER press release and spammed their forum boards with, "There is no new edition in any stage of development. Stop asking." Then, the next day, they had the unveiling of 4E. They ticked me off -...

Are you currently conducting a game? I've been playing D&D since the 70s, but haven't done any PnP since the release of 3.0.

I'm mildly confused (which is an improvement, really). Your about me says your in Mass. but the map has you in Burlington VT. I'm gonna assume, since there's more evidence for it, that you're in Mass., which is very disappointing for me. Anyway, I wasn't sure if you knew that there was a... discrepancy, I guess is the word I'll go with (as an English major I can never seem to decide on just one, lol) there... so... Best wishes.

Malruhn ran a game (in which I participated as a principal character) for about two+ years (?) from ~89-91 I think. He is an incredibly creative, fair, and fun GM. Give him a shot if you can. It is time well spent.

Due to attrition and professional success, our gaming group needs more members. We meet biweekly in Weymouth.

Currently we meet on Mondays, though that's slightly flexible.

We're just finishing a campaign and have started looking for more players. Collectively we're conversant with every major RPG. We're also individually nice, well-adjusted folk who want to play games as much as tell stories. We don't really have a system preference - its more "GM's choice".

The current plan is to start a DnD v3.5 game with me GMing. I'm a decent GM but we're always willing to have more GMs in the group and our next undertaking isn't set in stone.

If you want a group to GM for then we may be it. If you want a group to play with and don't ever wear capes to games, then we could be a good fit for you.

    Also, we're desperate.

What are you looking for?:
I've been DMing for well over 30 years, and have played most game systems but always came back to the core of D&D. After several years of resisting, I sold my soul to 3.5 and then Pathfinder and have loved the changes. I am looking to play weekly or bi-weekly.

I have a homebrew campaign world that may prompt some to recognize portions that have been lifted from other sources (I plagiarize freely!). CHR is definitely NOT a dump stat in my campaigns. I run a high fantasy, RP-heavy game.

My world has been well play-tested, and has an established history and many things for the inquisitive to find. I run an open, sandbox-style campaign, where I may drop adventure hooks from time to time, but if the group wants to head straight West until they run out of world - I can do that, too! Your characters can - and WILL - impact the campaign world - for better or for worse. Are you up to the challenge?

Player age isn't as important as maturity level. I've sent 40-year old's packing that weren't mature enough to play, and I've gamed very happily with very young teens.

Fantasy Dungeon Creation

by Malruhn on 12-11-2010 at 10:26 PM
After getting a comment on how I build campaign world maps, I've decided to talk about how I create dungeon maps. I have a confession... it's easier than I want to admit.

There are three sources for dungeons - natural caverns, man-made (creature made!!), and combo dungeons.

With natural caverns, I just use squiggles on a piece of graph paper - or download an existing cave map (http://www.climb-utah.com/WM/Maps/NuttyPuttyCaveMap.pdf). Then I arrange the monsters with as

World Building for Budding DM's

by Malruhn on 11-12-2010 at 06:52 PM
After a question from Blud about how to create a campaign world, I decided to create this to show folks just how easy it CAN be... if you LET it be easy.

I started with a Google Map of a town with which Blud may be familiar (it's his hometown!!), Republic, Missouri. I start with a new name... and welcome you all to Morlic (twisting the actual name around)!

I then get a screen shot of the map version of the town, and decide which direction the local port is, and which direction

The Fall of the Aspen Lord

by Malruhn on 02-08-2010 at 06:42 PM
I've been playing with the idea of writing a fantasy novel for about... thirty years. I am finally taking the first step of letting someone else read the prologue to the novel. Comments are most welcome.

Background Info

by Malruhn on 01-24-2010 at 05:29 PM
After reading lots of threads and several different boards about how to establish a campaign world (or just a campaign!), I thought I'd wax poetic here about my methodologies that have developed over the years.

I went on forever about how I do the big background stuff in my first entry, so here's more of a nitty-gritty view.

My world works... that's as clear as I can get to it. There are kingdoms that are foundering and failing, to either just disappear or be subsumed
