As a GM I like to keep my games open for anyone and everyone. I am not too concerned about party balance as an off-balance party can create loads of fun, especially watching a non-rogue trying to disarm a trapped chest!
I run my D&D Games in the Forgotten Realms primarily, since that is the world with which I am most familiar and know best. I have also played Pathfinder and open to being a player.
I do not care for powergamers or metagamers. I do like players who foil the best laid plans of the GM with clever thinking. The entire point of the game is to have fun participating in the story and really getting in depth with your character, perhaps to the point where you are sad to see the end coming. (BTW, this is the exact reason I use the name Mudgrubber!)
As a player I like action and puzzle-solving. (Shadowrun has lots of both!) Combat/hack and slash can be enjoyable, but should not define the game.
About Me
I am still married. Sons are all grown and have kids of their own. My wife Sandi plays 3E D&D and Pathfinder only, and she always plays wizards.
Times have changed and I have not played in a group for a long time. My son had a Pathfinder game but his work schedule changed, conflicted with mine, and I have not been able to game for a while. It is also difficult to game and tend to small children at the same time.
I started with the Basic Set in the mid-80s where I ran my first game and I still own. I played AD&D 2E for a while, but it kept getting more and more detailed until I just got burnt out. What books I do have are PDF and not hard copy.
3E rekindled my love for D&D after 2E ruined it for me, and that is where my heart lies, as well as my games. I have taken 1E and 2E adventures and ran then 3.5E with hilarious results! I tried 4E and not interested. I have heard about 5E returning to roots (not THACO) and would love the opportunity to learn more.
IMHO the entire point of D&D is to see your character grow as the game is played, not just in skills and feats, but in character development. It is one thing to start off knowing certain combat maneuvers, but it is the background and experiences that makes a memorable character.
