- I prefer a good dungeon crawl with some role playing as long as everyone's involved and the action doesn't grind to a stand still. If the other player's are requesting that you just get on with it, yer probably laying it on too thick. Short of that, anything entertaining is certainly welcome.
I stick pretty close to the books for everything from background to creature stats. With D&D 3.5, creatures can have pc or monster levels so it's hard to tell at a glance what you're facing unless your character can make a knowledge skill roll on it, so it's not like knowing what's in the monster manuals is forbidden knowledge, however we do have a few DM's for different campaigns and each one has a certain monster manual reserved for him alone, just too keep the element of surprise and maintain some interest for everyone. If you've already read 'em all, that's fine too.
At 41 I'm the youngest in the group I run, save for our newest recruit who's 19. So basically any age is fine as long as your mature enough not to expect Monty Haul campaigns.
In Non-D&D games like Rifts, I tend to get every sourcebook I can find for the campaign, but start with a few base books and add others as we venture into the areas they represent. Generally I'll allow characters from most any book to begin with, and the books used for initial characters become the basis for the campaign, with other source books added piecemeal later. It's less overwhelming for newbies and motivates everyone to explore.
About Me
- Biography:
- Started roleplaying in 1988 and have played Rifts, Shadowrun, D&D (all versions except 4.0/Pathfinder), MERP, Rolemaster, Warhammer, Ars Magica, and a wide variety of miniature wargames and board games. I've run a variety of campaigns but the best were D&D 3.5, Rifts, Champions, and Shadowrun. I love Rolemaster if anyone is running it in SLO. The books are being revised and playtesting is available through at www.ironcrown.com with free pdf's.
Currently playing in several campaigns and just ran "Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil" in 3.5 D&D. We've been playing every other Sunday for four years.
