- What are you looking for?:
- I'm pretty open as far as games go. As long as there is some semblance of reality/continuity involved. I do tend to shy away from a lot of the more recent games however, simply because they tend to get too bogged down in rules-lawyering for me.
Ideally, I am looking for a local group with similar interests more than a specific game. In my experience, how the group interacts is generally more important than the game system when it comes to an enjoyable experience. Although, in a perfect world, I would love to find a group who has managed to work the major bugs out of a universal system like Chaosium's Basic Role Playing and enjoys using it for different genres.
I am available in the evenings to travel (we have kids) or pretty much any time if we play at my house. I have a couple of teenage kids who would be interested in playing as well if someone wants to try and work that in somehow.
About Me
- Real Name:
- Jeff
- Biography:
- I have been playing RPG's since the early 80's, although I haven't played much since moving to Maine. Currently, I am playing a little CoC and World of Darkness online and on the phone with an old friend, but would be interested in a local game. I have played a lot of Fantasy and Cyber/Horror, but am open to just about anything run well with the right group.
I am looking for a few old-school type gamers who understand that the specific rule system is just a tool to allow roleplaying in whatever genre you choose. It isn't about shelling out endless cash to some big company for a huge line of books that will just be replaced in a few years with a new edition.
A GOOD game is one you buy ONCE and play for a lifetime. Of course there are always adventures and supplements to buy, but the system itself should be inexpensive and run smoothly in the background. If I wanted to play a board game, moving from square to square, with detailed rules about facing and "attacks of opportunity," I would play a board game. If I wanted to play a video game, sitting around with my trusty calculator figuring just the right combination of feats to allow me to execute a flying-double-scissor-hurricane-decapitation move, I would play a video game...
What I want is a ROLE-PLAYING game... where if there's a cooking skill and no-one took it cause they were trying to min-max their damage output, we go hungry... where if there is a complicated scenario involving movement and combat in an area that is not neatly broken up into 5-foot squares, I can just say "I do such and such, what do I need to roll to hit?" and the DM can give me a number and we can MOVE ON... instead of looking up skills and feats and arguing all night over what our characters should be able to do.... just sayin'.
