August 8, 2019: Autoduel Weekly: Gen Con Report

We are back from Gen Con and several days of successful demo-ing. The games went well and finished as quickly as they were supposed to. There were good comments about the car models, even though the ones we had at the show are only HO scale and have the textured surface of 3D printing.Questions Answered

 • Are the Car Wars cards sleevable? Yes. We are using what is called "mini-European" format: 44 x 68 mm. Mayday, UltraPro, and Fantasy Flight, among others, sell card sleeves for this size. UltraPro (and maybe others) sell binder sheets that fit.

 • Will there be a CW tournament next Gen Con? Maaaaaaaybe. There was a lot of interest and we'd like to do it, but we don't want to schedule it unless we are sure that we can do six or eight games at once with – if not actual copies of the game – at least accurate printer prototypes. And we don't know yet if August 2020 will be a safe commitment for that.

 • How long does a game take? Our target is "30 minutes times number of players," and in playtest we are hitting that target. It would go even faster with pre-generated cars.

 • When will the Kickstarter be? Probably before the end of the year. Whenever we start it, we want it to last more than a month, because fans have told us that they need big campaigns to overlap more than one paycheck. When it's about money management, we hear you .*.*. we are grateful for your support and we want to make it as easy as possible for you.

 • How can I make sure not to miss the campaign? Follow our two Kickstarter accounts –*Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 – so Kickstarter will send you an email notification when the project is active and ready for you to join. We also recommend following Steve Jackson Games on both Facebook and Twitter. We share pics, videos, and information on both platforms, and following us will give you an even better chance of noticing when the project is live.

August 4, 2019: Autoduel Weekly: 1/64 Scale

This is the first installment of a new sub-blog that will run here in the Illuminator, at least once a week, to talk about Car Wars as it enters the final phase of development. Most of the entries will be written by me (SJ) – except when they're not. We will try to provide photos, and maybe the occasional video, to go along with the words, so you can share our excitement as this project barrels down the road to completion.

I'll continue this blog until the Kickstarter begins. At that point, the Kickstarter updates will take over the job. Maybe someday, if the blog posts are any good, we can collect them in a book or something.1/64 Scale

* * We had a four-hour CW development meeting last week. Some was just review and direction-check, but a lot of things came out of it, including:
 • An awesome new artist who we'll introduce soon;
 • Rules that we can call 98% finished, because they include diagrams and layout;
 • And a change in scale, from HO to 1/64.

That's a big change to make so late in development, but it is straight from your feedback. It was the one suggestion that came up at nearly every playtest: "Why don't you go up to Hot Wheels scale?" Well, there were reasons for HO, the biggest of which was that you could use all that neat model-railroad terrain for scenery. But we hashed over it, and decided to make the change. The illustration shows an HO-scale car and base (red) beside a 1/64 car and base (white).

This will cost us a bit of money. Not only will the plastic models be twice as massive, but the bases, turning key, wreck markers, and so on will get bigger. But there are advantages.
 • Bigger vehicles will show off the detail already in the designs and make that detail more paintable.
 • A lot of modelers really like the idea of modifying their toy cars and putting them straight in the game.
 • Trashed toy cars will make really great 3D wrecks!
 • We don't have to increase the arena size, just modify the setup rules a bit.
 • And you can still use model-RR scenery for buildings. It's a bit small (1/87 vs. 1/64), but as Randy said, "Buildings come in all sizes!"

Next time, a report on our Gen Con games. Come by our booth and play Car Wars! Who knows .*.*. you might get your picture in the Illuminator!

July 20, 2019: Kickstarter Reports, July Update

The majority of our Kickstarter efforts over the last month have been centered around dealing with international fulfillment. It seems that no matter how much time, money, sweat, and stress we throw at the situation, international fulfillment of Kickstarter rewards is a painful experience. It is bad enough, many times, that we have to start weighing the pros and cons of even offering international rewards. For many nations, the number of backers is so low that we potentially lose revenue by including that country in a campaign. But we continue to look at the situation seeking a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective solution. No luck as of yet .*.*.

With that said, here's the latest news on our active Kickstarter campaigns.

The Fantasy Trip: Decks of Destiny

 • 2 at the factory.

As we mentioned last month, our ability to produce new titles is running into the limitations of the Kickstarter platform. We're exploring new crowdfunding options –*see Ogre Miniatures Set 3 –*and working out how best to use the various crowdfunding tools available to us. It may be possible that we need to create and manage a crowdfunding system on*Warehouse 23; right now, all we can say for sure is that we're looking at all possibilities when it comes to direct-to-you titles and crowdfunding new projects.

To keep close track of our Kickstarter efforts, we recommend following both the Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 accounts, as well as liking and following our Facebook page.
