October 18, 2019: Autoduel Weekly: Vehicle Build Points

In Car Wars Sixth Edition, you will need to construct a car before you're ready to enter the arena. Each car in the game is designed using Build Points (BP), an abstract measurement that suggests the relative power of the selected weapon, accessory, or upgrade card. Items range in cost from one to eight build points, and the start of every game session includes deciding on the number of build points that each player will work with for that event. The Car Wars Sixth Edition rules suggest two game sizes a small game (16 BP), and a large game (36 BP) though you're not restricted to those two choices. You want to run a 20 BP game? Go for it!*

What do items cost? Here are a few examples to give you a better feel for the Build Point system.
 • Spoiler - 1 BP - This grants you a bonus Ace token at the start of each round. When you are forced to spend a Control token, you may instead spend 3 Ace tokens.
 • Standard Steel Plate - 2 BP - When attacked on a side with this defensive structure card, you gain 1 extra yellow die when rolling defense.
 • Heavy Machine Gun - 3 BP - This shred weapon rolls 1 yellow and 2 green dice when attacking. Wrench results = tire damage.

There are several weapon, accessory, and upgrade cards in the Car Wars Sixth Edition box set, giving players several choices when sitting down to design a new car. And in addition to the cards found in the core game box, the miniatures expansions also include new weapon, accessory, and upgrade cards to broaden your car design options.

October 16, 2019: Deadly Doodles 2: Another Success!

Thanks to our amazing Kickstarter backers, we had a successful Deadly Doodles 2 campaign.

Our Kickstarter backers will be receiving 12 double-sided dry-erase boards with a total of six different maps, enough for four players. They also unlocked two holiday-themed PDF maps and three custom Deadly Doodles dice in different colors.

We created this expansion to give players challenging new ways to play the game. There are now different approaches to earn points, including Diamonds, Magic Doors that will open or close each round, Skull Coins and Cursed Emeralds that can become huge (but risky!) rewards, and Rune Gates that challenge players to make tough choices that they can't take back!

Of course, all these fantastic new features we added to our "Draw 'n' Draw" game would not have been possible without the support of our Kickstarter backers. Thank you all so much! To be the first to learn about our future campaigns on Kickstarter, make sure to follow both of our pages below.*

October 14, 2019: Limestone Caverns

This is a pair of 24" x 24" playmats for The Fantasy Trip (or GURPS, or any other game that uses hexagons). They represent a naturally formed underground labyrinth. Here's the neatest part: they geomorph, with the left edge of #1 fitting onto the right edge of either #1 or #2, and so on. So you can go from big, to bigger, to ludicrously big, just depending on how much table space you want to use. And it's a symmetrical geomorph, so you can flip any of the maps upside down and it still fits. Just because we could .*.*.

These maps were created by Ben Williams, based on a horribly crude sketch by me and the wonderful cartographic art of Dyson Logos. Here's a picture of the two maps in one of their eight different possible configurations. In the largest cavern, you'll see the 14-hex blue dragon from the Legacy Edition. Now, how does he get in and out? Clearly, magic is involved. (I suspect that it can take human form.)

The two Limestone Caverns maps will be offered as part of the Hexagram #3 Kickstarter, which launches on October 21 and closes November 1.

This great little beer & pretzels game by Tom Jolly goes all the way back to 1983. I am happy to report that*–

It's still fun, and

We have bought the rights to do a new edition!

We are just starting the playtest process, so all I can say about release date is "probably 2020."

For those who haven't seen it: Two or more wizards slug it out in a square-walled labyrinth, trying to steal each others' treasures. They cast fireballs, create and destroy walls, move the whole map around, and, when all else fails, punch each other. It's fast and it's silly, and we know those are both things that our fans like. I like them, too, so I'm having fun with this project.

One of our favorite artists has expressed interest in illustrating Wiz-War, and when we sign a contract, I'll post an update.

October 7, 2019: Looking Forward To 2020

We announce our upcoming titles to distributors and retailers four months ahead of their projected release date. This is for a couple of reasons: One, so distributors can get the buzz out, which lets them then make arrangements to preorder the titles. Two, so retailers can plan their orders accordingly and have the titles available on that release date. But there's another facet to that announcement – and that is letting you, our customer, know what's on the horizon .*.*.

So with no further ado, we present: new titles for January 2020!

We have one new*Munchkin title coming:*Munchkin Zombies: Grave Mistakes, a 30-card mini-expansion. We Kickstarted three mini-expansions back in March, and this is the first one to reach stores. We had a contest to name the mini-expansions, and this one was named by David Martin. It's a good fit, and the only real mistake is not picking this one up!

Also releasing in January is a new dice game, Texas Roll 'Em.**Designed in-house by our own Sam Mitschke, it's a fun little game you can take anywhere. Roll the bright red, white, and blue dice to see who can come up with the best hand!

Next, continuing our recent dice offerings, we present the Meeple d6 Dice Set. Yes, it's just what it sounds like. Dice. With little meeple pips! They come in six colors, with eight (same color) 16mm dice per pack. Collect them all!

On the cuteness front, we're introducing the Dungeon Survival Pack: Kitten Adventurers. With adorable kitty art by Katie Cook, this set includes a dice bag, three journals, and three kitty-themed dice.

We also reprinted a GURPS title that we'd been out of for a while. GURPS Basic Set: Characters is on its 7th printing! The demand continues for this companion to GURPS Basic Set: Campaigns.*(That Campaigns reprint will arrive in October, by the way.)

And one final fun announcement: The time has come to "unvault" our holiday goodies! You can now pick up the Munchkin Gift Pack and Munchkin Christmas Lite. The Munchkin Gift Pack will net you three popular Munchkin titles, already gift-wrapped and ready for giving. (One is Munchkin Grimm Tidings, currently unavailable except in the Gift Pack!)*Munchkin*Christmas*Lite is, well, lite! It's 112 cards in a tuckbox –*just the right size for teaching or traveling. Add a die and something to keep score, and you're ready to roll.

Today is the last day to preorder Munchkin Pathfinder 3 at the special Kickstarter bundle deal of $25 for Munchkin Pathfinder 3, the Munchkin Pathfinder Kill-O-Meter, and a bonus: Munchkin Pathfinder Goblin Dice! We've made this special preorder package available for those of you outside of the United States who were unable to participate in last month's Kickstarter campaign, and for any of you who simply missed out on the project.

All three of these expansions for the Munchkin Pathfinder series are at print and we're almost to the close of the manufacturing stage. If all goes well, Munchkin Pathfinder 3 will land in our warehouse before the end of 2019; we're on track to deliver the Kickstarer rewards (and Warehouse 23 preorders!) as originally estimated.

You're reading this after the preorders closed? No problem! All three titles are scheduled for distribution release in 2020; nothing offered as a part of last month's campaign is exclusive to Kickstarter.

Check out this new article from the Daily Illuminator that Steve Jackson Games posted:

September 29, 2019: Autoduel Weekly: Front-Loading Work

By now, it should go without saying that work continues on Car Wars Sixth Edition. We've invested tens of thousands of dollars –*as well as several years – into the creation of the new edition of our '80s hit tabletop game, and every step of the way has been guided by the desire to produce a fun, fast-playing game that can survive beyond the excitement of Kickstarter.

One of the ways we hope to maintain the momentum we gain during an active crowdfunding campaign is by reducing the time between close of the project and delivery to backers. If you've supported other miniatures games on Kickstarter, you're well aware that it can take a year or more for a successful campaign to deliver. (I have a few projects that I backed as far back as 2016 that have still not delivered.) Two to three years between the close of a project and actually playing the game is a long time to wait, which erases all the excitement generated during the game's funding stage.

What are we doing to reduce the time between project funding and delivery? One of the big steps we have taken is to move ahead with some of the early stages of manufacturing, even before launching the Kickstarter campaign. We've already told you about the custom dice that have been tooled up and are ready to go. That cuts weeks off the manufacturing process, and when the project goes live, you can rest easy knowing that the dice shown during the campaign already exist. The images aren't computer renders of a thing we hope to make; they will be the actual dice that we are already holding in our hands.*

What other steps are we taking to reduce your wait to play Car Wars Sixth Edition? Well, the absolute biggest and most expensive manufacturing stage we've tackled is the one that trips up and delays a lot of minis campaigns: the preproduction work to make plastic miniatures. Unlike a number of Kickstarter projects, many of the miniatures for the Car Wars Sixth Edition campaign will be actual prototypes produced by the factory. Rather than open the project with computer renders of combat-car miniatures that we hope can translate from digital files to reality, we will show photographs of the master miniatures –*raw as well as painted – so you can see exactly what we are making.

Now, none of this promises that there won't be car designs where all we can show are 3D images of CAD files. We cannot afford to produce scores of masters without some guarantee of demand. But we have over a dozen prototypes in the works and we are now reviewing those masters. And work continues! We haven't stopped designing and preparing miniatures, but if the Kickstarter goes big, we will have to share CAD images instead of masters for later stretch goals. We will identify if (when?) we are using computer images rather than photos of physical models.

It is our goal to deliver the game as quickly as possible after the crowdfunding campaign comes to a close, and moving into the prototyping stage with the factory before launching on Kickstarter will help us to achieve that goal. And if all goes well, we'll be ready to go with a second Car Wars Sixth Edition*campaign once the core game has shipped to project backers. As we said, we want to see the game live beyond the excitement of a successful Kickstarter launch, and bringing you more miniatures and expansions shortly after you receive your copy of the game is just one of the ways in which we will keep the game alive for many years to come.

Note: To receive email notification when the Car Wars project goes live, please follow both the Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 pages on Kickstarter.

September 27, 2019: Kickstarter Reports, September Update

Four different campaigns – The Fantasy Trip Adventures, Bag of Bags, Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 2, and Three Munchkin*Mini-Expansions – reached Austin the end of August and we started shipping packages as soon as we could. At the moment, only the three*mini-expansions campaign has not started shipping; the three other projects are mailing out every day. Check the various project updates for the latest news.*

In last month's post, we noted that we were going to put the brakes on offering international rewards, but we've continued to look at options. So we are going to try a new fulfillment partner for the international side of our Kickstarter operations. We want to ship our games to every corner of the world;* please be patient as we work through the details. Our goal is to make international fulfillment as easy and inexpensive as possible .*.*. for you as well as us! None of us wants to sink more into shipping than we spend on the game.

Our current projects and the status of each:

Deadly Doodles 2
 • September 23 to October 11
 • Now funding on Kickstarter! If you do not yet have a copy of the Deadly Doodles game, we are offering the game along with the new expansion in this latest project. Fans of Katie Cook's incredible artwork will want to take a close look at the campaign's add-on options.

Dungeon Fantasy Magic Items 2
 • September 2 to September 6
 • 555 backers and on schedule
 • The BackerKit surveys close on September 30 and it looks like we will start shipping rewards in October. Once all of the Kickstarter rewards have been mailed to backers, we'll offer the book through the GURPS On Demand program. This will be faster and cheaper for international backers than if we had offered to ship the book as part of the Kickstarter campaign.

Munchkin Pathfinder 3
 • August 19 to August 23
 • 444 backers and on schedule
 • This experiment is working out better than expected! The factory is wrapping up production of the three expansions and we might be in a position to deliver the project ahead of schedule. Preorder today at Warehouse 23.

The Fantasy Trip: Decks of Destiny
 • April 29 to June 3
 • 1,172 backers and on schedule
 • We are waiting for tooling samples from the factory.

Three Mini-Expansions for Munchkin!
 • March 25 to April 12
 • 1,331 backers and ahead of schedule
 • We will start shipping this to backers ASAP.

Bag of Bags
 • March 31 to April 1
 • 287 backers and on schedule
 • Currently shipping to backers.

Powered by GURPS: Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 2 & Game Reprint
 • March 4 to March 22
 • 1,019 backers and on schedule
 • Currently shipping to backers.

Pocket Box Games of the Eighties
 • January 30 to March 1
 • 1,974 backers and behind schedule
 • The project is behind schedule because the scanning and clean-up took longer than any of us expected. Check the project updates, though, and we think you'll agree that this is worth the wait.

The Fantasy Trip Adventures
 • January 2 to January 14
 • 1,375 backers and behind schedule
 • Currently shipping to backers.

Ogre Battlefields
 • December 5 to December 28
 • 1,401 backers and behind schedule
 • Currently shipping to backers.

That's a total of 10 active projects:
 • 1 now funding.
 • 4 now mailing to backers.
 • 2 start shipping to backers over the next month.
 • 3 at the factory.

In addition to the listed projects, we have more coming, including Car Wars Sixth Edition!*To receive notification when we launch new projects, we recommend following both the Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 accounts, as well as liking and following our Facebook page.

September 26, 2019: Deadly Doodles Reviewed At The Inquisitive Meeple

"I strongly encourage anyone who likes fun to check this one out. Steve Jackson Games has always been more than just Munchkin and this game is a real stand out for them!"

Thank you to reviewer Benny Sperling at The Inquisitive Meeple for taking the time to review Deadly Doodles, our new draw 'n' draw family game that was released to stores last month. The game has been a hit and we've already placed the reprint order (which is expected to arrive the first week of December), and it is great to see another review of the game.*

September 19, 2019: Coming To Kickstarter! Deadly Doodles 2

Deadly Doodles was our smash hit at Gen Con last month and we've already ordered its second printing (expected to reach our primary warehouse in early December). At every event where we taught the game this year, the one question we were asked over and over (after "when is this coming out?") was: "Will there be more maps?"

Yes! Absolutely yes. And you can help us make that a reality next week with the launch of Deadly Doodles 2 on Kickstarter.

The campaign is set to launch on Monday, September 23, and is scheduled to close on October 11. The expansion includes three new maps on Day One, and unlocking stretch goals expands the box to six new maps. And the new maps offer up new mechanics that lead to some twisted, nasty dungeons that are challenging to defeat. (We won't talk about my score of -8, okay?)

To receive notification when the project launches on Kickstarter, please go here and click the green "Notify me" button.

We hope to see you join the campaign next week to help make Deadly Doodles 2 as big as it can be!

International Update: Please note that we will be offering rewards to Europe and Canada, as well as the United States, as a part of the Deadly Doodles 2 campaign.
