Javelin, Spear or Other?

I have a small question (actually a series of questions) about 4e combat and weapons but didn't think it warranted it's own thread because it's so specific. So I'll post it here. If you happen to play or DM 4e, I would appreciate your input. So my character uses a Javelin as a ranged weapon. If my character were to use the same Javelin as a melee weapon, would it fall under the weapon category of Spear, Javelin, or is it an improvised weapon (since it's intended purpose is as a thrown weapon)? Basically would it do 1d8, 1d6 or 1d4 of damage as a one-handed melee weapon. If I swing it like a two-handed club, does that make it a two-handed improvised weapon?

Why does a Long spear do more damage than a regular spear when the only real difference is length?

What kind of damage does a shield do as a weapon?

    if you look at the table, it is under the spear group. But it isn't a true spear (head's are probably different) so it only does 1d6 dam even if used melee. As for using it as a club, that's iffy, but club is still 1d6 so it would be up to DM. But it is one handed. It doesn't say versatile, so you don't get extra dam for using it two-handed. Think of it as a light spear.

    Long spear probably has a bigger head on it so it makes a bigger wound.

    Shield is probably improvised unless you get the magic item "throwing shield." Which is my favorite heavy thrown weapon. There is also a spiked shield that does 1d6, but it is a superior (vs. military) weapon.

    Pointy is pointy, but okay, I can see that argument. Well, it does not say it's versatile but one could argue that it would be classified as spear when used as a melee weapon and thus would have those 'Properties'. Damage still might be 1d6 but I think I could squeeze an extra point of damage out of it. LOL
    Well then, I want to use a Spear for a Javelin.
