Adventure Idea #1: The Necromancer's Test

I was reading a section of The Complete Book of Necromancers by TSR and came across the mentioning that sometimes a necromancer would have multiple candidates vying to be his/her apprentice. So (while I'm sure this has been done already) why not have a necromancer build a multi-tier dungeon as a kind of "testing grounds" for them?
SPECIFIC IDEAS FOR THE DUNGEON:
1. Within each level could be a mini-boss. Perhaps an undead apprentice who failed that tier and is now tasked with guarding it agianst intruders.
2. The final fight could be with the undead form of the necromancer, his likeness or his final apprentice.
3. Each tier could focus on a different aspect of Necromancy (in some form or another).
4. Each apprentice guardian could have a journal or diary with details of his/her story along with hints about the dungeon, locations of secrets the characters might have bypassed and how to defeat the final boss.
NOTE!
This is just an initial concept idea that I felt like sharing with some folks who might like to use it. If you do, knock yourself out. Just let me know if you do, so I know people like it enough to try it out. Thanks!
