I just finished this one and since my players don't have accounts here i can post here for comments and reviews. I'm sure its still got spelling errors and grammar... but i'm not too worried. One of my own players who GM's for another group is running this as a play test. I tend to write sparsely and fill in as i go, so this is more verbose than normal. I run plot heavy, but this is pretty short; more of a side trek. I just did it so Arabus (my friend) can run something and see how well it went. Keeps my own writing skills sharp. I should probably fill in some more details with more creepy elements - but again i tend to make that up as i go so its a challenge to put it all down ahead of time like this.

Comments on the basic ideas are always welcome. ]]>

Of course it is, and rightfully so. Even hardcore gamers appreciate the better weather to a certain degree. What that means for me is generally gaming sessions go down, but i get a chance to write more. I dont have to stay on top of the campaign, so i get to catch up on writing more adventure notes, updating the world and rule sets, and just play with ideas in general.

But, its been more difficult this year.. i just want to tune out more and more. Not sure if thats an side effect of getting older, stress, or what - but it means less stuff is getting done overall. I'm not even getting the lawn mowed... i'd rather watch movies, drink a cold beer, eat cheese and take a walk.

Where is all this going? Who knows... but i know i have adventure materials written for years to come so i am not worried on that front.

But, I'll tip my cold brew back and salute all you hardcore gamers out there still going at it in the heat and the summer, telling stories, experiencing them, and dreaming them in your own worlds. My hats off to you... ]]>

I just am on the other side of 3 days of severe neck pain and being dosed with anti-inflammatories, ice, pain meds, and sleep medicine gave me a burst of creativity. In the middle of it i had a great idea for an adventure down and wrote it down on the backs of 3 pieces of a character sheet print out i had next to my bed.

Now that i look at it a little clearer to type it up, its absolutely brilliant. And it takes place on a ship, not many of my adventures are on water. It surprisingly well crafted with good background - full NPC's; names of places, ships, people, etc. In fact, its less fighting and more of a "contents" - lots of scenarios which test skills, not combat itself (though there are a few of those).

All things considered, it was... well... "drug inspired" one might say. I'm still hazy and cannot type fast, but i'll get to it soon. It involves halflings, gypsies, knights, and pirates... a jail break, lies, one heck of a storm and a silver tongue. I'm pretty happy with it... about an 8 out of 10 i'd say. ]]>

I gave my players an opportunity to earn rewards - action points in the system we use - for blogging about their adventures in their characters voice. More if done from a literacy view limited by appropriate level of literacy. A couple people clamored for it, but it turns out in several months not one player did it. I'm not sure what point this proves, or why i'm even bringing up the point, and i wont say i'm not disappointed... but i'm not surprised either.

I guess i was hoping in some weird way to get some feedback as a GM. The players give me some pretty heavily filtered feedback in offhanded comments, but i was hoping to get some better ideas on character directions coming straight from the "characters" themselves. It could help me tailor the campaign more to the group as well... so now i just go back to keeping things told mostly as i feel they need to be told. Maybe i just have a lazy group. Everyone's got a life - including me (more so than most), but a few moments of expressing myself seems like its pretty easy.. oh well. I think i have a pretty good group of players - some are power/meta, one more MMO and "points" driven, but most are very story-centric and go along with the epics i tell. I wish i would get them involved more somehow. Sometimes i wonder if its because i do so much that they do not feel like they have to. One player is taking over GMing, and here i am writing materials for him to test running... I need to stop obviously and enjoy my short break. ]]>

Resurrection or New Character? http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1630-Resurrection-or-New-Character Mon, 04 Jul 2011 16:43:33 GMT Sometimes its hard to decide... I've long past the power gamer stage where i need a character that is the hero and can do everything in every situation. Heck, i don't worry about dying so much as i worry about a good death when it comes. But... what do you do when you are faced with the proposition of the possibility of resurrection vs. the opportunity to play a really cool new character concept? On the one hand, there's a lot invested in the old character... but its old hat. Its known and understood, and while not boring, its a little mundane. Its less challenging from a role-playing perspective. The new character is untested, has a lot of work to figure out their role in the group and social pecking order, where best to use their abilities, and what to focus on development so they compliment others in the party and maximize their own advancement. The known character is about how far i can take story threads and how well the character can build their connections, family, reputation - things the new character will eventually come to as well... can i wait? What's most important? And this changes of course depending on the mood you are in as a player... a crappy day just makes you want a clean slate - screw it! GIVE ME THE NEW GUY! I good day with friends makes you miss the comradeship the old one had and want to do anything to bring that back. Hard to decide... ]]> templeorder http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1630-Resurrection-or-New-Character <![CDATA[Encouraging players to blog about their character's experiences]]> http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1587-Encouraging-players-to-blog-about-their-character-s-experiences Mon, 04 Apr 2011 18:39:42 GMT I'm finally trying this again. I've had two players convince me its a good idea to encourage blogging to add flavor. I'm afraid its going to be self-rewarding to only a couple characters, but i will try it again.

I've laid down the law for the campaign and set some some basic blogging protocols.

Too much going on, not enough time to blog http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1444-Too-much-going-on-not-enough-time-to-blog Fri, 12 Nov 2010 15:50:22 GMT Well, so far i'm done with 1 of 6 solo play scenarios (all connected in a series) and about 1/3 done play testing the first one.

I'm also working on a group play called the Sickness of Braddon Bog - that goes really well. In adding some finishing touches i think i've made it too convoluted. It seems to twist the fate of about 5 different groups or powers together, painting a bit of a dizzying picture. It would take a un-ordinary group of players to really appreciate the complexitites - especially as it was integrated into the campaign (lots of history which is unknown).

I started a FaceBook page to support the gaming system: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/p...5258981866107; this has taken a lot of extra time to keep going. And yep, the rules are going through a 3.5/4.0 revision cycle (because 3.5 never got officially published i'm adding to it and calling it 4.0 - major re-organization of content, some changes, trying to make the materials as stripped down for core as i can. Also freeing up materials which were once under subscription - having to put caveats about the condition of the materials though... ugh.

I am switching my play testing from google groups (older offering) to a FaceBook group under my personal account. In fact, i now have 2 game play groups, dev group , and playtest news list under my personal account.

Not getting in enough play time. ]]>

OF little strategic importance, the North-West lands of the swamp bordered Lowlands were the seen of a massive struggle for power between His Lorship Earl Berithor Aelishan - the current and rightful ruler of the fief of Bar-Innis, and his usurper sister Dierdre and her Riverdan allies. Months of carnage lead to Berithor's Umbakian allies trying to exert both local rulership (in Berithor's name of course) and to force their faith upon the local, predominantly Wyld Faith followers. Waging a crusade against the Orrish of Dwindor Swamp from the west at bergen and beginning at Prencross, Berithor and his Umbakian allies tried to squeeze the Lowlands in a vise. Lead by Sir Robert Wheglin, Baron of Osmail Mark, and aided by Dierdres personal agents Gide's Gallants, the Lowland was trod under the wheels of war. Hundreds perished, thousands maimed. Entire villages gone - but in the end, through treachery and fortitude both, it was Sir Robert and the gallants who stood in the field. In its hasty retreat, Umbak emptied the town of Braddon Bog - a sleepy stop over point between Bergen and Small Mark. Also the ancestral protectorate of Xarharan, Geraldine and Taer of Gide's Gallants. Though Taer and Geraldine were both far too wounded to enact any defense, Xar grabbed a few of the Gallants and went on his own and pursued the slow moving loot caravan. Waiting for the majority of the advance guard to speed forward to Bergen when they approached within 4 hours, Xar made his attack. Against a single knight and a squad of men, Xar and his already wounded companions used range and deception. At last the knight fell and was hacked through his armor. The remainder of soldiers and baggage men fled and the loot caravan was slowly turned and rolled north first to Osmail Mark - along a much better road. Since then, the town's goods have languished... but it is time to return to Braddon Bog and bring a measure of happiness back to
the community who suffered so much at the hands of the Umbakians and Lightbringers.

Into the fall rains, mud, sickness and cold goes the group to return the rightful property.
However all is not well in Braddon Bog. Even the occupation cannot compare to the fear they find themselves in now... a fear borne of eerie hapenings, superstition, and a force they swear has a thirst for their very blood. Can the group unravel the mystery and solve that which plagues the town, can they heal.... THE SICKNESS OF BRADDON BOG? ]]>

We tested the lowest to the highest challenge levels and all sorts of styles, techniques, and abilities - all combat related. Lots of stuff broken and easily cracked. Now on to the editing phase where all the notes get entered and rules updated - the tough part. I got lots of notes and a lot of questions to answer - balance in the system is always the hard part.

Posted the campaign materials on Obsidian Portal...

The connection part is optional, but they all fit together well if done in order. Still play testing them, but i will post all 6 when i am done. Only the first one is complete and i need one interactive test session where i obeserve to see if some of the little features i built in (hey, the web offers a lot more than paper!) are being used and worth it to keep in.

Sadly i was on another forum when it was asked what your favorite game would look like as a board game. As a designer, i could not resist the call and i sat down and pounded out a board game in a couple hours. I cut a bunch of card stock up and plan on testing it in the next couple weeks. I started typing up the initial mechanics and then a single "Tale". You can find it here:

http://www.incarna.net/iweb/game/form/board/tale/

Of course i am in the middle of another rules update: 3.5. Since deciding to make everything 100% free i find the mechanics too "advice heavy" or "explanation heavy" and am ripping out as much text as i can to move to player and GM services and keep the core mechanics light weight. Throw on top of that a heart surgery, mothers back surgery, wife's kidney infection, and a looming deadline at work of October 15th to release a full year's worth of labor for UW Medicine.. well, things got crazy (again). But i wont stop developing and designing. Had a 10 hour session last weekend - needed that.

Looking forward to some Munchkin, Arkham Horror, Kobolds Ate My Baby and who knows what else tomorrow. ]]>

This is of course along side the 3.1 mechanics update. Solo quests are very different from the dynamic interactive GM. As a GM, i want to preserve that same sense of depth and immersive experience buts its impossible to do without addressing so many options at each decision point. My first set of play testing feedack was not to over complicate. I'm taking that to heart and scaling back things to make it easier and more fun for players. Its a choose-your-own-story approach which means the emphasis is on giving clues and hopefully the PC's see them - they usually just have to be more obvious because i'm not there to assess if i've been too harsh or difficult and adjust the difficulty if need be. So far its been fun. I realized it could not be a normal sized adventure as i wanted the first to be short and sweet. Good feedback already as well on what the purpose of a solo quest should be - most agree its a "fix" for when groups cannot meet. I'm kind interested in maybe "Assigning" them to players - make them for players and letting them individually or in a pair at most go through them. Of course, i have to rely on their honor if they live or die. I often have time early morning to make these sort of things on the weekend, otherwise i would grab a couple players and do an online game for a couple hours - but schedules just do not jive, especially in the summer. ]]> templeorder http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1288-Solo-Quests ENNIES vote http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1270-ENNIES-vote Fri, 23 Jul 2010 14:13:40 GMT Cast my vote for PnPG... surely there's enough users here to get it in the top three... ]]> templeorder http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1270-ENNIES-vote The perils of running your own game site http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1225-The-perils-of-running-your-own-game-site Sat, 12 Jun 2010 22:43:34 GMT I always prefer the control over simplicity. 9142, Month 7, Day 12; The party returns to the surface lands of Belmain only to find that all their mounts and any equipment has vanished. The ruins of Gnedfort City stand in the distance, and the party decides to put as much distance between themselves and the dead city as they can. The village of Terrovere is the closest locale – where they were threatened before and likely where the hunters followed them from.

The group approaches, tired and sore under the cover of darkness. It is easy to steal back their supplies and mounts form the unsuspecting villagers who believe they are dead. The locales have not even made much of an effort to hide them – they must have believed the party to be dead. Beeddel remarks that the theft of the horses and gear seem more of an act of opportunism than outright hostility. There’s no evidence to connect the locals with the quality and organization of Steel Eyed Pete.

Having found the proof they needed from the crypt of the Crithomyssis family on Rom’s Mount, they wearily head back towards Tadeus, hoping to report back to Sir Stuart on their success, and to get healing and replacement supplies from the Darrow Brothers Crofters – agents of the Shady Rock Merchant Coster… Tadeus lies only a few slow hours travel in the dark away. The group can probably make the Darrow Brothers farm before sun up, before anyone can see them.

False dawn breaks in the east as the group sends Beedel to rouse a couple hands on the farm. Two teamsters and the groomsman – a man named Jiles Swone – aid the party in unpacking and stowing their gear. No one asks questions, despite the wounded nature of the party… Jiles takes Belim aside and says that he wishes to speak to him of a serious matter later. He shows Belim his holy symbol – the lord of beasts – and says that Daruphet the father and Rastur, lord of lions wishes his servant to assist their party. Belim looks grimly and nods…”Later though – there is much to discuss”...

As Vraxen files past, Jiles steps out and offers his hand. “Its an honor sir… to meet the famous Vraxen! Your duel with Dolgrath Pritchard is legendary in these parts. Well, sir, its just amazing that you are here… i hope to talk to Belim about joining you group and it would be my pleasure to serve in your company.” Vraxen just sort of stares and grins… everyone has stopped, the exuberance overwhelming all else momentarily. “Gosh kid, maybe after i get some ale and shut-eye we can talk…” He shambles off to throw himself down on a pile of hay, kick his boots off and shout for ale. ]]>

It may take a couple sessions to finish, but at least a few people are excited. I'm hosting all my materials at Obsidian Portal.

I'm going to offer the players a choice of characters from a bunch of pre-defined ones consisting of various western governments secret service agents, native tracker, secret society agent, ex-military (union and reb), freed slave, even an asian agent to interface with railroad workers. This should be freakin awesome!!!! ]]>

We all want more, and must balance out the family, friends, work and other hobbies. Ah well. Got a couple fantasy games - one is only a few times a year. One is regular. I got one on hold (Thug Life!!!), Stormbringer we do occasionally and i'm going to run a Weird West (think Jonah Hex meets Wild Wild West) game soon - i'm really looking forward to that one. One sci-fi that gets reviewed yearly and we all keep swearing we want to come back to it.

I have enjoyed moving my campaign to Obsidian Portal. Could be stronger, but its perfect as a generic solution for table top gaming. I really like it. I'll do my western campaign there too. ]]>

The role and approach to luck http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/1181-The-role-and-approach-to-luck Thu, 29 Apr 2010 00:16:53 GMT Does anyone use "luck" in their games as some sort of official mechanic? Is it personal or group based? We have both good and bad as an actual mechanic. I've tried to come up with a good way to approach a "shared" luck approach without much agreement. The 2 prevalent solutions are
1) All personal luck can be conferred on another party member
2) There's a sep. luck for the group that is less powerful but can be used by any in the group.

The first one is easiest but the most out of balance. Just send in your best warrior in a fight and then let the other PC's grant their measure of good luck as needed. Seems out of balance to me. But i hate creating a whole separate mechanic for group luck. The one conditional factor i thought of was to say it could only be shared when the encounter is shared. IS that it, as simple as that? Anyone out there have any other ideas? ]]>

We have a discussion going in our gaming group about the definition of a hero or villain in gaming terms, that is understood by both player and GM.

Is "heroic" usually based in good/evil or malicious/virtuous? I would guess its gotta be good/evil since evil may act virtuous in pursuit of their goals.

Here's the initial text -
Hero or villains are labels for those characters adopting roles center to the game plot who also choose a code of conduct (evil or good), and choose a "side" or "cause" (IF such is available and willing to let the character endorse them) to champion so that they may work the code to the benefit of their allies. Hero's and villains are visible, public, and quite obvious about their goals and intent to further their cause and as such attract attention - wanted or not.

So gamers out there - would this work for you as a technical means of assessing hero/villain status in order to have some extra benefits conferred on you? ]]>

There is so much feedback from the 2.x rule set that while i was compiling 2.5 changes, i decided to make the full leap and implement some large scale changes. Many of them affect unfinished non-core mechanics. So far roughly 300 change items across many products and materials.

Yesterday's session we did the last test of Best Practice guidelines and integrated upbringing and weak backgrounds (3 CP max) to see if the balance was skewed at all. Seems like it was no problem. If anything, it seems like there were plenty of left over CP for character creation - maybe too much. 5 CP (thats 14 CP worth of stuff) got a upbringing and a weak background (riverfolk, bodyguard)... this left 15 CP still and already set the character skills to maximum value for their most important.

After mulling it over, i'm thinking there may be a "pathed limit" - i.e you can free form it, or you can choose a path - one or the other, not both. Time to post to the playtest google group and see what the testers think. ]]>

When it works well http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/949-When-it-works-well Sat, 23 Jan 2010 05:17:42 GMT So, its been a while since I blogged. A lot of the campaign has changed, but it moves forward. I'm thinking of using a minor plot line from a friend who ran an adventure in Dwindor Swamp with this evil tree, undead forces from Gwinn, and sunken boat and artifacts. Anyway, the old witch is dead and the new characters have to return to this evil place - so i contact LArry who came up with the whole thing and was the GM. He gives me the details on the history of the place and how the magics works.

And its like he was reading my mind!! For the play scenario i'm planning, you could not have invented a better background and plot details to aid with it all. Its almost eerie how well it all fit together, it nearly crossed that line from strange coincidence to frightening omen. Anyway, now i'm completely enthused to finish writing down my ideas for this adventure because EVERY just works now - the entire history of the place, its current use, my plot lines and even the NPC's make sense. Its like we collaborated directly on it, and it just saved me hours of peripheral thought to come up with all of it. I love it when 2 GM's gel like that and things just work out perfect. Plus, he can continue building on it with my work and maybe GM a scenario later with our combined materials. Sweeeeeeet. ]]>

The group was... The tax wagon was delivered to Christiana in Easthoof successfully - Diedre can now start her civil war with her brother for Bar-Innis. The group was only given a couple, but were healed up and re-provisioned with the basics.

Along with two recent hires placed under "LT" Gide (as christened by Christiana now) they were sent to help out a rebellion in Cerran's Grant. Arriving in the wrong place, complete with their disguises of the Count's men, they were brought into the enemies line and given command of Cage Northfort. Cage only stayed because he knew the commander of the reserves, where were fronted by the left flank. Like a chess game, Gide divides up responsibility so that each person can accomplish their missions and no one suspects the real plan devised by Geri. Cage, Gide, Xar and Taer lead the left flank into the battle. A runner arrives just as the march starts saying that a preist of Gaia
will be leading the enemy and may use the stream bed - mystical effects may be present, but Anwin warns that those who falter will face his wrath. Geri, screaming to be heard, draws the messenger closer and cuts his throat as he bends down to yell into her ear.

Edric, donning the cap thrown to him by Geri, mounts up and grabs the messenger pennon of Anwin. As the battle is fought hard on the left flank, Geri vanished to the stream, followed by the priest of Malek. Cage unleashes his berserk fury and as the left flank folds it does not completely collapse. Edric waits for Anwin to commit to the
farmstead's attack and strike him from behind, knocking him from his horse. Crying "assassin, protect the master" he performs a daredevil maneuver, diving off his horse and landing atop the magus - point first with a dagger. In the resulting confusion, he enters the combat, getting brutally hurt in the few moments he tries to pass through to a palce of safety. The bodies mount in the left flank as Cage's berserk fury holds it from collapsing. The priest uses his command of nature to shoot lances of ice into the forces of Count Badgericus. The reserve forces are decimated, but the line holds around Cage. Geri, floating down as a wounded body, leaves the stream, and tricking the priest into believing she is an innocent (she not dressed link a soldier after all), says she has information on the enemy. Surprising the priest, she gets lucky and drives a dagger into his neck and her and the priest of Malek retreat under a hail of arrow fire - three striking her. They both float downstream, Geri nearly dead. When the priest tries to heal Geri, she rips open his shirt to see the grey symbol of Malek - and only shakes her head and tells him to work his healing.

Fighting a defensive action, the rest of the group have to cover Cage as his berserk state does not allow him to back down. Gide
nearly dies in taking blows meant for Cage which would have killed him. The battle ends, barely a victory for Count Badgericus and
Cerran's Grant. Gide has to take down Cage after his fury will not end and he strikes down one of the count's men and they prepare to fill him with arrows. In celebration, Gide names his band the Green River Brigade. They are celebrated into the night, and Gide finally takes the patched up Cage (stabilized anyway - he'll be out for several days) and leaves at nightfall, after hearing rumors of Anwin's death and an assassin. The group meets up at the appointed place a quarter
mile down the river. In a cold camp, they can can hear some soldiers looking for the Green River Brigade and wanting to celebrate. Debating on what to do next, Geri advocates heading to Anwin's without rest - she's fearful that the magus may have survived since Edric did not stand around to be sure. Only Xar really escaped without much damage.

Cage will definitely not be able to help, and the rest of the group is very damaged. Geri reminds the group that there are only 5 more guards remaining (unless Anwin's replaced one) and surprise will have on their side. At this point, everyone's operating under the leadership of Gide, and Geri feels that Cage can be persuaded to join the band since he's
a mercenary and was only hired for the one battle. ]]>

I cannot wait to return and get some stability back in life. I did make the entire run of Lost seasons 1-4 - WOW. That sure made a lot more sense watching them back to back instead of missing episodes, trying to download and catch up, and skipping some. I am now convinced its great television. Not seen any of season 5 yet - but i wont until i can watch the whole thing back to back.

Fevers really suck. If anyone doubts vaccines, get your head checked. Stop listening to fear and those who use pseudo science. I would have got it but i got sick before i could. 102 degrees is nothing to look forward to. I feel wiped out still, but gotta go back to work - plus, i do miss the accomplishment and work i do there.

My brother's tried to cut me out of my father's inheritance, i love family squabbles. Where were they the last 8 years as my dad slowly died of dementia - did they care for him? Nope... I'm not bragging, its an awful thing to go through and no one should... but really, trying to cut me out just because they are greedy? Thats pretty low.

Well, thats it for now. I published my 2.0 version of my game game system, Incarna. Thats the mechanics, now i've got items to finish, spells, rituals, and a few minor tweaks to complete the 2.x cycle in full.... this is the first version i felt actually was stable enough to make products based on.

I'm back in the saddle again.... ]]>

Wild Wild WEst http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/entry.php/794-Wild-Wild-WEst Fri, 16 Oct 2009 15:48:22 GMT Sweet. I'm half way through Season 1 of Wild Wild West and its totally inspiring. I've begun creation of a setting where i'm going to run a few sessions in this style and setting. I've laid out the possible character group (they kinda all have to be the same) starting points including secret service, foreign governments, secret society, and rebels.

I've been dreaming about this for months, i think this is going to be such fun that i may pull my normal fantasy gamers into a long running western camapign.

Of course i'm going to throw in Jonah Hex and as much Tim Truman based material as i can! ]]>

Was supposed to GM only half time but a 4 hour scenario turned out to be 8 because the players expected me to be my devious self. Felt bad, but no character died.

I even managed to type up about 3 pages of notes for the adventure for future use.

Also me and [wulfdesign] helped to remove all the performance problems on the host's network - configuring modem, router, firewall, dhcp, and a Windows Business Server 2003 machine. Latency went down from 2-8 seconds to zero. The domain security policies were all perfectly applied and we helped get him thinking about a mail server and how that works using his domain parked at Comcast.

Got a lot more feedback on Incarna 2.0 rule set and my head is spinning. I'm having trouble figuring out where the free stuff leaves off and and secured materials begin. I've even thought of abandoning it as a commercial game idea and freeing up everything - but i'm not there yet. The biggest challenge is providing paths forward from a certain point where advancement is slow and character branch out instead of up - i don't wan't to encourage super characters with crazy abilities, but the system needs to encourage whatever innovation needed by users without my drive to make it realistic killing the play. ]]>
