Indeed. I have the oppurtunity to DM the kids of my Dad's friend-and m Dad, and his friend- and I have to use 3.5 because:

A) I all ready have one of the books and the other two core ones were cheaper than getting the 4.0 books.

B) I have too little experiance with 4.0 to feel comfortable DM'ing it. I can simplify 3.5, my DM does.

I even have maps, dialogue, and a first encounter prepared. hopefully they'll want to keep playing instead of being scared off by character creation and basic rules.

I'd love to get a weekly game going with old-school 1st edition DnD (w/houserules), WFRP (any edition), or even Traveller (CT or MgT). But alas, can't find enough players in my area that can commit to a regular routine. I probably could if i were willing to drive an hour one way, but i am not.

One perspective that might help people to feel less constrained by the rules is to view the rules as modular.

Please explain for those of us not born when AD&D came out :)

Once again. Old School is "That which is not forbidden is permitted." D&D and AD&D did not have a rule for everything. When the player announced that his character was going to swing on a rope across to the balcony and stab the Evil bad guy with his dagger between his toes, it was up to the DM to figure out how that would or would not work. There wasn't a rule in The Compete Rope Swinging Guide and another in the Compete Dagger Between the Toes Guide. The Instant authoritative Answer is the Old School DMs stock in trade. You got fast on your feet, enguaged your imagination and fun was the object.

New School: "Everything not permitted is forbidden." There is a rule for that in the Complete Rule Book of Rules and it will take but a moment, or five, to look up. Over thirty rule books, not including setting supplment books in the D&D 3.5 set ,and it looks like Forry will surrpqass that in record time. The DM just has to set them up to be knocked down by the numbers. While fun might still be the object, the rules are in your face. It favors the person that learns the rules and learns them well.

My Saturday game can go entire evenings without ever cracking a rule book. I've never see that happen in a 3.5 game, ever.

Arkhemedes

Good point Tesral. Still, I feel like I should make an attempt to learn other rules because I certainly am not the world's authority on everything and there are a lot of new and interesting ideas out there and different perspectives on things that I simply have not thought of or realized. And its never too late for any of us to learn something.

Play the way that is most enjoyable for all involved, use the rules that work, modify those that dont, or ignore those that interfere with your creativity. Everyone in your group should have a say, but ultimately, its up to the dm/gm to weave the magic, so whatever is needed to allow he or she to express their vision and shape their art most effectively should be welcomed. Now dont get me wrong, Im certainly not suggesting an anarchistic approach, a structured and consistant methodology is required to create a world that will flourish, I just recommend utilizing the rules as ideas and guidelines rather than iron-clad laws. Unshackle yourself and wonder awaits!

keep one indoors

Inside is good. I have three cats, all indoor cats. My indoor cats do not drag dead things home (or worse, live things) They don't get into fights with strays, get killed by dogs, run over by cars, or any of the hazards outdoor cats deal with.

They are safe, fluffy, clean, and loving. They don't even want to go outside.

3.5 played with the core books and NO other books is a great game. I like it as much or more than any other rpg out there. I think it is superior than 1st edition, However you should definitely read Gary Gygax's introductions in the 1st Ed. PHB, DMG and MM.

Those introductions are the true, original spawn point of Roleplaying games in my opinion.

Meh. Pretentious prattle. He had just given his partner the shaft and was trying to assume the mantel of the gaming god. Have I mentioned that Gary Gygax was an ass? He mellowed out those last few years, thankfully.

The success of D&D went to his head. After he was chucked to the curb himself and his next several trys in the gaming market fell flat on their face I think he came to realize he was not a gaming god or a genius. It made him easier to live with.

Or it could have been hairballs.

Almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, the preacher pipes up: " Lord have mercy on your drunken soul, Brother-are you ready to find Jesus?"

Out of his skull, the drunk agrees: "Yes I am!" he replies. and with that, the preacher grabs him and dunks him under the water. Moments later, he drags the boozer back up: "Brother, have you found Jesus?"

"No preacher, " stammers the drunk,"I have not!"

Stunned by this, the preacher sends the drunk down again...this time leaving him there a little longer. Shortly he drags him back up again:

"Rid your soul of the poison, Brother-have you found Jesus?"

Gasping for air, the drunk splutters a reply: "No preacher-I have not!"

At his wit's end, the preacher sends the drunk down one last time. A full minute later, he pulls him out: "For the love of God,"shouts the preacher, "tell me you've found Jesus!"

Coughing his lungs up, the drunk wipes his eyes and turns to the preacher: " You sure this is where he fell in?"....

Read that. I have to agree from the shot they used. A 15 story hairball would look better.

Indeed. But look on the bright side. With architecture that bad, there's little chance of a terrorist attack there (too busy laughing).

Some of those buildings don't look that bad. The Chicago library, in particular, is pretty impressive - especially considering that most would be seeing it from street level.

There was an A&W built back in the eighties that "won" a local aware for architectural ugliness. The facade was best described as a post modern "sex aid".

A couple of year in they "castrated" it and refurbished the whole place in and out to 50's deco. It looks much better without the three story useless protrusion.

Which is simply a factor in his favor.

W. C. Fields, who all things considered may have coughed up a hairball now and again. Hair of the dog was a favorite of his.

The cats, or the hairballs? Cause the cats being dressed in armor and pitted against eachother doesn't seem like a bad idear. But the hairballs would be kinda...awkward? If only because I don't want to have to ask anybody in my life how to acquire "Armor for my hairballs."

Cats with lion cuts.

Thought that said Lion cults. Which makes sense. Would a cat not worship a bigger more vicious cat? One who could overthrow their human suppressors? And munch on them with much ease and delight?

...I think I just performed a sales pitch for a Lion Cult.
