Just want to make sure I am reading this right;

a weapon that deals splash damage is centered on a SQUARE and you count the number of squares out from that square. Meaning you end up with something looking like this:

Bursts are centered on an INTERSECTION so that you end up with a series of squares that look like this:

I know that is correct.

The issue is starship scale, concussion missiles have a 4 square splash. According to the above image that is a massive splash area considering the scale of a square in space.

Is that right? Do concussion missiles REALLY affect THAT many squares in space? Or should that splash only be applied to character scale?

Thanks

I'd have to say that the concussion missile splash range is correct. As I posted in the equipment thread (http://www.penandpapergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8554&page=2), the size of a square in space is abstract, representing hundreds and occasionally thousands of meters. Even if you assume that a square in space is 1,000 meters wide, this means that the splash of a concussion missile is effectively 4 kilometers.

My personal preference is to keep exact measurements to a minimum, especially given the speed of combat in space and of the ships involved. In a fight between starfighters, squares might only constitute 100 meters or so.

it is actually cleared up in this thread:

Turns out that listing is only for character scale attacks.

Wow, that is interesting. Guess I should've dug a little deeper into the starship combat section. My logic was that the splash for a concussion missile or proton torpedo would probably be larger than four squares in character scale.

Thanks for digging that up.

Pg. 173 of the Saga Edition Core Rulebook states that "because of the size of starships, area attacks...are resolved as attacks on single targets in starship scale unless the weapon is specifically listed as having a starship-scale area attack" as does the Gravity Well Projector on the Interdictor Cruiser listed on page 100 of Starships of the Galaxy (errata'd to "3x3 square starship-scale area attack")
