I gave the Character Builder a spin this evening. Although I did have some trouble getting it installed because of some .NET component that was getting hung up during install, I was finally able to get it working after a few End-Processes and a reboot. Once I cracked it open and started using it, I was pleasantly surprised.

It really sped up the character creation, since I didn't have to crunch any of the numbers myself. And, unlike other generators I have used in the past, this one actually had full write-ups of the powers, feats, etc, that I was taking. This is a huge time saver, since I didn't have to look up anything in the Players Handbook or other sources to understand what I was looking at. On that note, it also had feats, powers, equipment, and rituals from not just the core books, but also the Adventurers Vault, Dragon Magazines, and Forgotten Realms guides!

I highly recommend you give this a whirl. The beta version only supports creating a character up to third level, but hopefully we'll see a full version out real soon.

This is indeed a handy tool. One of my favorite parts is the character sheet setup, which allows you to customize the arrangement of your character sheet.

Having the rules at your fingertips helps a lot, no more flipping back and forth through the rulebook as you go through the creation process. And no more hunting through the feature lists to see which one your character is qualified for.

This tool alone may make the 6$ a month investment for DDI worth it as it adds in the latest rules from all released books.
