Q: If I attack a barbed devil (DDM) with a creature that has DR5, does the damage reduction deflect the damage from the barbed shield?

The answer to this question is odd. ("No"). And this causes me to wonder how damage reduction is supposed to work. This example appears to be an anomaly of game mechanics rather than any continuity in story reality, but there may be something I'm missing. Damage reduction only works on attacks not on damage from defensive abilities?
