View Full Version : Mapping Keep on the Shadowfell - Very cool terrain building blog series

I just stumbled on the "Mapping Keep on the Shadowfell" series of blogs at The Gamer Dome. It's a five part run of blogs that shows how the writer took the paper grid maps from H1 - Keep on the Shadowfell -- and turned them into full terrain.

Even if you have no intent to run the module, this is a very impressive (and picture laden) series of blogs.

The only down side I see to the work is; can it be used for something else? I don't like to put that much work into something that has has one use.

It could be used for a number of games really. Depends more on what the person is into than potential. Storing it is the challenge I'd have to figure out. You don't want something like that to get broken, or dusty.

If making it myself I would create the various elements as separate pieces on a standard bit of terrain. The stream, the standing stones, watter fall and so forth, so they can be used separately or together.

Yeah, I tend to make each feature a separate piece. It keeps the piece clean and not too cluttered. That helps create more uses as each piece is then called into use separately and can be used to represent other features rather than using the same exact location. Standing stones can be in multiple locations as can pools or stands of trees.

Still, I would take nothing away from this piece. I really like the falls, in fact, I am waiting on the day I build my own water features. Have four different methods I am dieing to try. lol

The only down side I see to the work is; can it be used for something else? I don't like to put that much work into something that has has one use.

I was wondering about this myself. It really is a wonderful job. But an incredible amount of time and resources ($500) for 2 or 3 games sessions.

If you are running the module repeatedly at cons and such it's a nice addition. I would not put that kind of work into a one time only piece.

Once you have terrain, you find ways to use it. This could easily be used for Warhammer or any other fantasy based mini's game (such as the D&D one). I agree on teh cost/utility factor... but I've always found time to abuse what I had.
