What's your favorite cherry-picked combination of classes? Thought of any interesting ones?

Cherry picking=using a handful of classes to augment your main class. I consider "classes" as a meta-game concept, which is why no one walks up to you and says, "man, us Fighters need to unionize."

Ever since Final Fantasy I've had a fascination with these guys:

Main Class: Wizard (Abjurer)
Cherry: Cleric 1, Magic and Healing domains (or up to 9 for raising dead)
Popular title: White Mage

The cleric adds healing, turning for divine feats, and the ability to use cleric scrolls and wands. Or how about -

Main Class: Rogue
Cherry: Barbarian 2
Popular title: Saboteur:cool:

This creates a rogue with a speed boost, medium armor, shields, martial weapons, and a bad temper.

Old School: Gnome... Thief/Illusionist.
4E: Gnome...
Main Class: Rogue
Cherry Pick: Illusionist
Popular title? Gnome

I heard or read somewhere that the illusionist class will be in 4th edition. Maybe this time it will get the respect it deserves.

In 3rd I loved playing as a Rogue 2 / Paladin 3 / Sorcerer 15. Run around with fear immunity, Charisma bonus to saves, and evasion, on top of spell casting ability. So much fun.

Now, in 4E, I like to pick Ranger or Rogue for the nice damage boost it gives to do so. Not a player yet, but I did throw the PC's against a Fighter / Ranger so far who really gave them a reason to fear death. :D

Main Class: Fighter
Cherry: Rogue 3
Popular title: Raider

Coulda gone Ranger with this, but the Rogue gives you Move Silently ranks and 2d6 sneak attack damage, for taking out unsuspecting guards.

I was thinking close to the same thing, only..
Main Class: Ranger
Cherry: Rogue
Popular title: A Robbin' Hood :drum: (sorry couldn't help myself)

one of my characters has taken the targetteer (alternate fighter class, ranged specialist, from dragon magazine), some levels of guardian (alternate ranger class, no spellcasting, slightly more skill points, some ranger abilities, and a few special terrain based abilities), cragtop archer (mountain top, high ground specialist archer), and deepwood sniper (forest based, sniper specialist). considering that the character is a grey elf, the only elves with an affinity for stone, the combination of mountain and forest is quite appropriate.

his catch phrase? he claims to be the second best archer in all of the lands. and when he is questioned as to who is the best, he replies that he doesn't know, having never found them, but he can always hope.

one of his life goals is to succeed in becoming an arcane archer... but due to backstory reasons it has not happened yet.

He'd have Best Archer pretty well nailed in my campaign - the next best would only be a Fighter 4. Although Weapon Specialization, Focus, Point Blank, and Precise Shot are nothing to balk at...

Main Class: Fighter
Cherry: Diviner 1
Title: Best Archer Alive

The key to this one is sneaking in a True Strike spell when you need it.

heh. turns out his specialty winds up being long distance shooting. he can theoretically hit someting almost a mile away. according to how the special abilities are written, anyway. the spot check is something else....

i'd have to crunch the numbers, but as he is currently built, he could probably outshoot even a specialized fighter. he gets 15 range increments with sufficient head room, bonuses for higher ground, and a passel of archery specialized abilities, some of which boost the distance of his range increments. his targetteer abilities are very sweet.

Primary Class: Anything melee oriented for 4 levels. . .
Cherry: Any of the Tome of Battle classes
Title: Varies

Why wait for 4 levels, simple, you can take 2nd level maneuvers with your starting picks. And if you never take another ToB level, you still have a pile of combat maneuvers you can use at any time.

combat manuevers would have been good as fighter moves in the first place.

Does no one like Improved Sunder? What about Improved Critical?

Main Class: Cleric (Domains Strength and War)
Cherry: Fighter 4
Title: Acolyte of the (insert weapon here)

Fighter 4 ensures you get specialization and a few steps into a combat tree (Power Attack and Cleave, anyone?). With your Spiritual Weapon domain spell, your weapon of choice takes on otherworldly dimensions as it slices foes into bits - seemingly at supernatural speed.

Main Class: Rogue
Cherry: Shadowcaster 2
Title: Nightcrawler

The Nightcrawlers might not be a bad name for a guild, but these guys can cast darkness and get major stealth bonuses as a supernatural ability. 9 times (or more) per day. Just make sure the character has a good reason for being in touch with the dark side.

paladin-2/wilder-4/battle sorcerer-4/metamagic specialist/cerebromancer-10 (all cha based...)

get cha to saves, cha to touch ac, and get to wear light armor with no asf, plus metamagic spells without increased casting time several times a day, and 14th level equiv in both psionic and magic. take practiced caster and practiced manifester feats to boost manifester/caster levels to 18 each.

The single most fun character was a Halfling Rogue/Ranger who was a master chef and womanizer. He could get in more trouble in a saloon by himself than the party could get in an average dungeon. Only reason he lasted so long was his bonus for being a Halfling and all his skill levels in jumping, climbing, balance and tumbling. He finally got ate by a very large critter but he was a blast for 3 campaigns.

If you dont mind, i'm going to have to steal that character concept for my next WFRP campaign. I can see the potential fun in playing him.

i had fun making a character who was an ancient old man and heavily based on the mental stats for all his classes. the +3 to all mental stats is nice, even with the -6 to all physical ones. it was kinda fun playing a crochety rampaging geezer who constantly griped and moaned about all his physical aches, pains, and various gastro-intestinal problems. i even petitioned for a breath weapon and a nauseating stench ability.... (halitosis and bean-for-lunch-post-digestion, respectively.....) ^^

talk about having a *blast* playing him. :D

Quirky characters are fun to play. I once had an idea for a Dwarf cleric who had denounced his church (not his god) for what he percieved as their greed and decadence and took a vow of poverty. He was not to be "skilled" at survival and as such, he became homeless and was forced to subsist on whatever he could scrounge up. Ragged clothes, spoiled food, no clean baths and an unkempt, scraggly beard. He looked awful, smelled worse, and had some distinct speech impediments as he was missing a few teeth. Not to mention constant dysentery from his pitiful diet. ;)

I made a character very similar to yours, including the stat bumps and subtractions acording to age(he also had a great background profile which i wont go into here). This human sorcerer/druid 1/1 was a 6ft 7in albino in his 90s, weighing in about about 130lbs. What a blast he was to play. Unfortunately, he was killed off due to some stupid decisions from two other players(details written elsewhere on this site). I took the idea from this guy, see in the far right of the pic(click pic to enlarge)...

btw, notice the fighters in the pic? Notice how they look like normal Joes and not bodybuilders? Yep, what youre seeing here is good old-fashioned 1.0 DnD. Back then, you were lucky if your best stat was a 15. Ahhh, the good old days when charcters werent superheros in stats, but i digress.

I think that pic is less about stats and more about art budgets, and thank goodness for that. :)

Perhaps, but it sure did represent the stats of the day: average all the way.
