I'm use to playing AD&D 2E a lot in the past. My old DMs had these rules for specific experience gained per class. For example, a fighter, when killing a creature, would get <character level> * 10 * <hit dice of creature> in additional experience. Other classes wouldn't get hit-die bonus, but instead get bonus for doing something for their god (cleric), casting/learning spell(mage), or stealing(thief).

I've moved and now my new DM has never heard of this. Were my old DMs liberal with XP or do these rules exist? If so, do you know what book?

It's in the DMG on page 48 table 34 is individual calss awards and it list who, what, and how you get them. If you don't have that book want a copy of that page pm and I'll try to get it to you.

Yes, Raven21 has pointed in the right direction. The only trick is that what this is talking about is an Optional Rule. It could be that your current DM doesn't use this and the old ones did. As for myself, I use a version of this that is expanded off of the concept put forward in this optional rule.

Cool, thank you. I started google-ing and it seemed like the internet had no idea what I was talking about.

EDIT: I do have the book, thank you. I was searching in the PHB for some reason.

Liberal. I ditched the whole individual awards as too cumbersome. I award based on a percentage of an average level.

I like that rule as a guideline. It encourages players to look beyond just hack and slash of the game for exp.

This in my oppion was one of the best rules 2nd ed had. It relly got to the point that their was more to xp then killing the monster. But on the flip side it does cause lots of book work. I had copyed this chart and had it taked to my screen so that i always had it in front of me but after a few yeras of of using this it became second nature.

That's all you have to say. There are no rules just guidelines that players and GMs agree too before the game takes place. I have believed that since the day I started GM'ing. I think a good GM will tailor the "Rules" to his style of play and as long as he is fair and communicates these changes to the players they should have even a better experience.

As for the individual xp guidelines, we used those as well. We of course changed them up a little.

Anyone got dlb monster xp for a solo kill, and 1.5 times experience for a kill you shared with one other person. All casters got 10xLevel of spell when ever they cast a spell that benifited the party in some way. Rogues for successfully completely any rogue ability that helped the party. (Detecting Traps, Removing Traps etc.) Every player, class had chances to gain extra xp by participating in the game. I think this rule went a long way into getting players to do more things then sitting back and letting others do the work and just getting the "party" xp.
