What version of D&D are you playing? Any of them will have a table that says what XP totals characters need to level. If it's D&D 3 or later, it will even be the same table for everyone.

it was originally set for 4e with some 3.5e mixed in, but after playing with the 3.5e basic set im more geared toward 3.5

The formula for the XP needed to reach a certain level in 3.X is:
(Desired Level-1)X1000 plus the sum of each (previous level-1)X1000.
For example:
XP needed to reach 5th level=
1000 X ((1st level -1) + (2nd level -1) + (3 level -1) + (4th level -1) + (5th level -1)
= 10,000 XP

Which could be defined as N * (N-1) * 500 where N is the desired level.
For N = 5 it results in 5 * 4 * 500 = 10000 xp

Again don't forget the table. It will be found in the first couple pages of the chapter on classes. It also points out when the characters get feats and attribute bumps

It's on the second page of the Classes chapter (At least in the good version of D&D) and is rather undersated at the bottom of the page. It's easy to overlook.
In retorspect if I was the editor, I would have placed it at the top of the page and made it stand out more. Then again the entire look and layout of the 3e core books sucks, always has, always will.

Yes. They tried too hard to be "artsy" with the page interiors. Sometimes, less is more...

Less 3.x, more fun.

i would have to disagree. fun comes from what the players do in-game, not from the rules. they are suggestions after all, ignore what you don't like, use what you do.

The basic truth. Yes, but people like us will always argue because we are flame war addicts, it seems. Hah!
