Could I use a nonpsionic version of the Skill Finesse feat from the 3rd-party book Hyperconscious?

Choose one skill. With it, you can use your key ability score modifier instead of the ability modifier normally applicable for the skill.

It blows combat casting out of the water if you have a low Con score. It might be a bit overpowered, though.

Caligula
07-24-2008, 02:53 PM
I'd perfer if we stuck to the WotC published material....and that does seem slightly overpowered. I'm gonna have to say no to this one. ;)

Me again. The dread necromancer's undead mastery ability makes the corpsecrafter feat (Libris Mortis) redundant. Does that make my character qualified for feats based on corpsecrafter or do I have to take it anyway?

Caligula
07-24-2008, 06:23 PM
Nah, just assume that you have corpsecrafter for this specific case.

what kind of general suggestions do you have what would be considered appropriate for the bonus feat flaw?

Oh, yeah, extra feat.....sweet.
DMG2 okay?

It's a three page scan of DMG 2 feat: Apprentice.

Zane
07-24-2008, 11:02 PM
Ahh, I tried to get to it, even used a friends google account, but one needs the proper permissions. All of which, of course, got me curious as to what it was. :D

what kind of general suggestions do you have what would be considered appropriate for the bonus feat flaw?

Think about something that you might encounter in a dungeon environment....here are some examples: phobia (heights, slime, fire, water, one-eyed monsters (:D), etc.), physical deformity (missing limb, limp, blind in one eye, colorblind, etc.), mental issue (excessive greed, pyromania, gluttony, paranoia, etc.) If you need more ideas, drop me a PM and I can get you a big list from one of my GURPS manuals...

Yep. :)

Hmm...it didn't work for me either...

michaeljearley

Basics. You choose two skills, these are now class skills. You get 1 skill point in them. You have a mentor that you must stay with for 5 levels (not attached to, but checking in with). This mentor either gives you a +2 during a circumstance, or provides some kind of "Favor" you can make a skill check to try and use sparsely.
Literally an apprenticeship. Apprenticeship is a prereq for a mentor feat that I havn't read into so far, but you need alot of skill points, and then can teach others that skill.

Hey Amy :) I was wondering if you were ever gonna show.
Yeah, she'll do fine. Get her sheet up in the Character Sheets thread when you can.

Caligula
07-27-2008, 12:33 PM
Alright, in response to Addis Hellfire's question in the Announcements thread:

About turn order, I think we should only use it when in combat, when turns and rounds are enforced. Initiative will decide who gets to act first. As for non-combat, I don't think it will work very well. (I haven't seen it in play before, so this is only my guess.) Hmmm. Anybody have some thoughts on this?

Genzodus Thoth
07-27-2008, 02:27 PM
I doubt it will work unless everyone's all online at the same time. Otherwise, it would just slow the game down.

Abbadon
07-27-2008, 02:33 PM
For combat: Yeah, good idea.
Outside of combat: I think it might be a good idea to wait until everyone has posted at least once so that we know if anyone intends to react to another PC's actions (this has come up in games I've played before). If someone posts something that noone could react to (stuff that takes no time such as making knowledge checks or glancing about, etc), then they could post again. It will increase the post count some, but I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to post "I do nothing" if they aren't going to do anything that cycle. This isn't enforcing turns, but keeping rounds in.

nijineko
07-27-2008, 05:16 PM
having a post order can work, so long as no one disappears for a week or so. limiting it to when turn order can make a big difference is a possible comprimise. =D

michaeljearley
07-27-2008, 09:43 PM
Combat yet, non-no, but yes let some time pass for responses.

Caligula
07-28-2008, 02:39 PM
Alright, we shall go with combat yes. Outside of combat, just use common sense and let others respond to what they logically could. I really don't think we need strict rules....just keep it fun.

Also, I talked to Amy (Tempus) yesterday night and she thinks it good that she should not join, seeing she might not have enough time once school starts again, so she probably won't be joining us.

Caligula
07-28-2008, 02:54 PM
Alright! Almost time to begin!

Two other people need to get sheet to me. I imagine we can start, and anyone who has their sheets and wish to begin meeting with the merchant can post and get to know the other characters that are there (that decide to show up). When the other two finish their sheets they can walk in when they choose. Otherwise, I'd like to get this rolling now so the PCs have a moment to speak with one another.

If anyone objects to this, say I. If not, I'll get the opening posted tonight.

michaeljearley

We've barely even introduced ourselves yet.

Zane
07-30-2008, 12:25 AM
True, 34 posts in, and we barely know each other's names - and not even everyone has that covered. Of course, the first night had a *lot* more posting than tonight has...

BTW - now that the majority of the party is there, I was planning on having Lalitil introduce everyone that has offered their name (since she has been there for the everyone that has given their names), and likely make a snide comment to those that haven't. :-P Of course, if someone beats me to it, that's fine.

update on progress. between feeding and comforting the teething baby, playing with the older hyperactive little offspring (whom is trying to learn the lesson that temper tantrums are NOT allowed), helping the wife, things around the house, and family time, i was able to get the first character almost done. and start on the second. ^^ just the assignment of a last few things, and the first will be done. the second will be a pretty focused character, so in many ways simpler to make. (as in faster.) =D

a note about the second character: i will likely assign several levels of the primary class, a few of the prestige class, and then another level of the primary class. this is due to the fact that the prestige class is very limited as to which abilities they can select, while the primary class does not have that restriction. as a healer-type, there are certain abilities that i want this character to have that a straight progression in the prestige will prevent, hence the mixing up of levels.

posing is hard work! holding a pose for so long is even worse! i'm starting to envy those who had time to order something. ^^ not that we actually need it right now. just body habits, you know.

i'm starting to think that we should start a new thread of "rp'ing while we wait for the dm to return", or something!

starwolf013
08-25-2008, 12:32 PM
Indeed. I don't think I know of the clerical spell to alleviate muscle tension from standing in one place too long.

Cure Light Charlie-horse perhaps?

Zane
08-25-2008, 02:15 PM
If you got something to say, I say go for it. We can always suspend realism temporarily for the sake of keeping the game half-way alive and then get back into it when the DM returns.

Oh, I tried to locate an email for Caligula, but couldn't. I thought I had emailed him at one point, but I guess I only used PMs through this site.

nijineko
08-25-2008, 11:10 PM
grrrr. oh well. remind me to always get instant message and email contact info from the dm (and fellow players) from now on, ne?

i didn't really have anything else to say specifically, unless we want to take some time so that i can try to alleviate some of the misapprehensions that have occurred concerning my characters. ^^

Addis Hellfire
08-26-2008, 09:06 AM
Indeed. I don't think I know of the clerical spell to alleviate muscle tension from standing in one place too long.

Cure Light Charlie-horse perhaps?

That won't work, this is a curse, I think . . . who cast kill GM?

nijineko
08-26-2008, 11:57 AM
rather than a cure, as a charlie-horse isn't technically damage, per se, would be some kind of pain-blocking spell. that or something that would counter the effects somehow. perhaps something that would remove paralysis?

i think we must have scared 'em off! that or rl is interfering. now if anyone should post about an absence, it should be the dm. ^^ we'll have to tease the dm about it, if we can find the dm again.

maybe we could beg farcaster to send an email on our behalf.

Sorry for intruding, but do any of you know if Caligula is accepting more players? You're not too far along are you? And I'm really looking for a game that isn't cold-molasses s-l-o-w !

From what I read, an Archery Ranger wouldn't hurt your group any, would it?

Zane
08-28-2008, 10:40 PM
If you can get ahold of Caligula - ask away. Right now, we are at a standstill and have been for almost two weeks I believe as he hasn't made it online to help get the story along. So, I think that kinda qualifies as "cold-molasses s-l-o-w !"

michaeljearley

*walks in from the rain*

Wow. I'm surprised there are still people in here. Needless to say, I had no internet connection the past whatever eternity days since my computer crashed, and the freakin library is too far to get regular access...and when I do get my visit, I find that they have no internet. What kind of library doesn't provide internet?? Anyway, we bought a new computer, so now I have some access to the forums again. I am a little out of it since I havent really been on or around this, but we shall see if I can't get things goin again. Ha. No access to the manuals either for the past whatever, so I'll need to go get them again.

Either way, I apoligize for all the hell recently, and hopefully ill be able to get on once a day to keep things up. To Anodyzed: The game, like Zane pointed out, has been at a standstill, but if it gets back up, will go as quick as the players allow. Yes, I wont be on all day like i used to, but I would think enough to keep the flow going. If you are still interested, I'd like to see your character.

So, if everyone is still here (can I get a headcount?), we can get rolling again. It's good to be back.

Its not too bad at a 1st level, and I think that would give a player the chance to learn his character and all it entails AS the game progresses... quite literally as the character got better, so would the player comfort level with a new system. And it really is new enough to have some major 'get used to' involved. BUt a 10th level... whew! Overwhelming to start one there with all the powers, spells, feats and whatnot.

I'll have Tannar done tonight or tomorrow. Have to go through and 'buy' stuff now. Human, not elf, but still archer specialist.

I am right in posting here yes? i saw a post from Caligula that you were looking for a Priest. i would be most happy to fill the roll. also Caligula stated that there are infact several different position slots open if that is already taken. i do enjoy Clerics so i would be happy to be one. though i would like to know before hand if there is a specific deity the cleric must follow, it's important for back story.

Alright i have finally come to a Monk/Cleric/Sacred Fist. i cast as a 6th lvl cleric and i do a damn good job as a monk. my character set up was the standard 18 through 8 that was the frist character gen option, he had a low starting con but when he hit lvl 8 he had 10 con instead of 8. he is a gentle soul and the reason he is helping the party is because he heard they were trying to get to the bottom of the incidents happening to the town. unable to turn a blind eye to the people's pain he would go to great lengths to see these people succeed. this is probably the most goody goody character i have ever played haha

Starwolf...it seems Bruenor does not have an alignment on the character sheet. If I missed something, do inform me, but otherwise, it would be nice to know his alignment for the record. Well lets just say that it's not the first place the average person would want to visit. Drow can be scary. Very scary. I know this because I had a character (Human Fighter, like level 19 or something) that got his tongue ripped out by a drow (with it's teeth). Good thing he lived or I woulda been pissed at my DM :D

Nice Version. You can post whenever you want, but make sure to be considerate of others.

Not-So Nice Version. Don't make me confine everyone to a strict turn based game when this should be a fun game. This can be a fun day at the fair, or military camp. And since our heroes are already gonna go through hell in the game, lets not make it any harder than need be. :p

In other words, just think before you post. If someone else hasn't had the chance to react, give them the chance (obviously though if they dont want it, theres no problem).

Fair enough. All that has happened was absolutely nothing. Everyone is all sitting around the table. Anything else should be on the last page, such as mr. zombie heading for the door, and Otik standing up. That enough info?

[boots of landing] always land on your feet, 2 fewer dice of falling damage then normal.

it doesn't save me completely. but it definately could save me from my own rediculous jumping.

Well - we're needing a clarification from the DM on the money, and now the number of bags. I read it as there were only two bags, but now four have been taken from the merchant...

Once he gets online he can clear this up, and maybe also let us know OOC what kinds of shopping might be available in town? Pretty please? :D

Zeneak
10-19-2008, 03:01 AM
Agreed, though i have an OOC agreement that i would like to make. my character is not much of a taker, so if the group agrees to take care of me on equipment, i will only plunder a 10% gold intake of the standard.. or to make it simpler.. for every 100 gold the group makes, i'll only take 5 gold. which he will still probably give some of that away, but it is his living expenses. so keep me well geared and OOC i will take very little and IC it will appear that my character is a very kind and supportive character. though the likely hood of me finding gear all the time is slim, as long as people OOC are looking out for him, things will work out. not to mention the money grubbing will love this set up. just put out when we come across something that will keep me alive.. like an item that will keep me from being a plaster mark on the side walk hahaha.

Zeneak
10-19-2008, 03:29 AM
Also i would like to ask if the DM here considers clothing to be enchant able like armor. if so get landing on them.. lol 5 gold monk's outfit enchanted for 4000g so i can fall 60 and not take any damage. lets see... using the DMG magic item creation tables: feather fall lvl 1 arcane spell x lvl 1 caster x 2000g for continuous effect x4 for a spell that is 1 round/lvl so the final cost for these boots would be about 8,000 gold. give or take from GM. if i could figure out the numbers for 3/day i would do that and it would be a lot cheaper to make. have it last 5 rounds, which feather fall goes at 60ft per round.. 300ft fall.. if i fall farther then that.. then i'm dead anyways. but i think the continuous on is easier.. i just have to find a mage willing to make them for me. <.< unfortunately for my character to search a mage out to make him special boots.. he is going to have to find out the hard way.. that falling hurts.. here's ta hoping my character doesn't die from a bad jump hahaha.

Zeneak: Go ahead and spend a little extra on your fancy boots.

Zane: The number of bags the merchant pulled out was two at first. Well...considering that it was 850,000 gp in platinum that would be what?...85 thousand platinums to fit two bags, and (p 112 of the Player's Handbook) since fifty coins = 1 pound, then our lofty amount would be around 1,700 pounds.

Okay. Magic bags = easy way out. To stick with my original post, lets say there are two bags (one of which I believe was taken by Zomerus). Also, as a clarification, the original post reads: "Out of one he took a platinum piece. 'eight hundred fifty gold pieces now, four times that upon completing the task. Is that enough for your fancy?' " which he said, but he meant 850K for those of you raising eyebrows.

And as for spending options, I'll elaborate on that in a few :D

Yes - especially since we got all the players except yourself in one area - so you will be lacking in RP potential. After all, even with 3 characters, I doubt you can really say that much to one another. :D

I'm hoping that we can get the other group of players split into two - as it would make more sense for getting around town with less notice. Of course, once we get the shopping taken care of and it gets to be evening, we can finally get our party into the fortress and all together - and then really get this game underway. :-)

Oh, and as a heads up - during the week I am usually unable to check the site until the evenings due to work.

No problem - I wasn't expecting to actually be able to purchase anything else before the mission - Lalitil simply requested partial payment up front as a good business practice.

Oh course, since you offered - I intend to make use of it. I've got a couple lists of a few items Lalitil would look for - depending on whether or not there would be the possibility of enhancing currently held magical items.

Nij is right...enchanting takes a while. So stick with new items, and like I said, anything from PH or DMG. We don't need to roleplay the actual store scenes, but just say what you want to do and we can handle it all. Of course, you may want to talk with your comrades (in character) about how to divide, spend, etc. the money so no one ends up killing the one that bought a hundred happy meals from mcdonalds.

What I had said was the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Handbook mainly, and if you want anything out of the other books the need to be non-magical. (I just stopped writing the last part after the third time repeating it :D). Now whether a psionic toy is considered magical...I'll vote yes just because of the nature of the town.

speaking of which, we are eying a fair number of minor items. the 141k per character correct?

Zane
10-21-2008, 05:55 PM
Well - the way I looked at it was that Guardian gave someone (I can't remember) a choice of two items of the three he mentioned. So, I sent him a PM about the two items that Lalitil would most want, and he had me roll search checks for them, as they were on the more expensive side, but together still under her portion of the starting money.

So, as far as I can tell - nijineko's character have two bags with 42,499 plat in total (subtracted the one spent for drinks for the tavern), Zomerus has a bag with 21,250 platinum, and Lalitl has one with 21,250 platinum (although, that number will drop once she buys the items she wants).

All of this money is in addition to what each of us would have started with before we ever met. So if you have something that you already bought as part of char creation that shouldn't change; at least, I can't see how it would.

BTW - the 141k was not per character, but per player. After all - nijineko could claim to have three characters, and thus try to claim a larger amount of the coin. So, I determined the 141k using some OOC knowledge of players to make it more fair for the players. Now, nijineko has half of the money anyway - so if he wants to spend it all I can't see anyway we could actually stop him. :p

That makes sense, everyone ok with that split?

As far as who buys what, I think we should all just come up with one or two items, PM the DM to check them, and move on so we can actually get the game moving again. But that's just my opinion. :D

Genzodus Thoth
10-21-2008, 06:27 PM
That sounds like a good idea. Now I just need to figure out what a necromancer who thinks he's a hero wants to buy. Also, how much black onyx (in gp value) do you think that the town has? It seems that X per HD is needed for a number of reanimation spells (probably all of them).

nijineko
10-21-2008, 07:10 PM
ah, i was considering the fact that i was only playing one character until i volunteered to play a healer type and thus added one more. as far as Ii goes, she is pretty much the same thing as a familiar, and thus counts as "part" of Oo. (but don't tell Ii i said that...) so i was only thinking that i had two characters. even though they are closely knit, they are seperate individuals and will not always agree on everything.

so this is a case of even distribution between characters not being the same thing as even distribution among the players.

to be honest, while i would obviously prefer to have equal resources for each of my characters as a player, the characters themselves do not feel that way about it. in fact, they would chide me for being overly concerned with material things. so i must bow to the wishes of the characters in this, and will accept whatever the group decides is best.

unless the group decides otherwise, i will assume a division of wealth by players, resulting in the 141k per player.

Well, the items Lalitil searched for, and found, actually totaled 140k. So, if we actually split to players (still ignoring Ii, not because he's a familiar but because he really doesn't seem to need any armor or weapons or anything :) ) then we would have only about 121.5k each. I know that Androsant won't ask for much at all and Tannar is asking for well under that level - so we will have the coin. However, if we split that way, I went over her allotment. So, I can drop the enhancement on the dagger a little to get it below, unless everyone is ok with Lalitil using a little more.

my characters have expressed an interest in various forms of equipment more than weapons. given that our shopping is limited to the dmg, there are no weapon related things available that my characters want to purchase. if the magic item compendium was available, that would be different. ^^

they seem delighted by the various interesting nick-nacks that magic users have come up with over the years. psionic items aren't nearly that varied or interesting, by and large.

There is a random treasure generator in the back as well as another list by price of every magic item in both the compendium and DMG in the book. i found that once i started using it, really it was just bothersome to exclude it. ^_~ this is one of the don't knock it till you used it books i found in DnD. if i was restricted on books to use in my games, i would keep the core three, the forgotten realms campaign setting and the magic item compendium. and i have purchased 11 books, and have access to more, but those five books are what i consider nessesary to run one of my games.

Yes, there are shops. For simplicity, anything from the PH and DMG is available. Of course, with buffs to weapons and such, you'll need to try a little harder (usually a search check or something similar, based upon how rare I judge the particular thing is to be found in this town.)

Yes, what was purchased or in the character's possession before the inn scene is yours and has nothing to do with the money Otik gave you.

(Haha Zane...just had to put the one plat Zomerus spent in the calculation. :D)

Well, when Nij's three characters are taken into consideration, they would each want their own portions (unless if they are that good of friends) to stay in character. Of course, he isn't likely to spend everything on just one of the character....stay in character.

As for a split in money, it really relies on what happens with the people that have the money. Heck, if either of the three players that have the money decide to run off, it could be a quest in and of itself to hunt him down (not a suggestion, of course, but just a thought) So, if Nij decides that he doesn't want to share, theres not much more that could be done peacefully.

So, bottom line, decide among the entire party (I would have thought in game, but this is just fine if it floats your boat) how to split the money by an in character manner. Either way though, (I haven't been into the game thread yet, so it prolly changed, but Nij I believe ran off lookin for the knights and really can't debate right now with the rest.)

That sounds like a good idea. Now I just need to figure out what a necromancer who thinks he's a hero wants to buy. Also, how much black onyx (in gp value) do you think that the town has? It seems that X per HD is needed for a number of reanimation spells (probably all of them).

Lets say 100K g.

Seems to me the GM will be dividing the XP among X characters... thats the same split the loot should go.

My character Tannar is the one the GM told me two of my three wanted items, which totalled 36,000 gp value.

XP will be split evenly in most cases. As for loot, I am only going to list the items able to be found, and let the characters fight over their desires.

As a note, remember that treasure is not always found in pockets or around a monsters neck or wrist... (so I will only list that which is outward first, and then the rest upon a search of the corpse, etc.) Caligula told me some different ideas to implement, so I plan to. Keep your minds open and try different things and you might find some things you never expected.

A little off the subject, but I can't follow Caligula's exact thought of the game without his notes (and I don't even know how much outlining he did, but knowing him he did a good amount beforehand), so I am improvising with my own material.

He told me that I should ask if there are any of you that had some stuff behind the scenes with their characters between you and him, and ask those of you to PM me with the info so I at least know.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of it that way...

Also, I wasn't sure if you included Reh (Abbadon) in the calculation, so in case if you have, go ahead and take him out. I'm going to zero Reh unless someone objects (he hasn't said anything yet or become very influencial to the game yet, so I figure not to have him walk around the dungeons with a potential invulnerablity because he needs to be safe for Abbadon's return. My idea is that when he wants back in, Reh can walk onto the scene and bump into the party).

i love the magic item compendium, i find it an invaluable tool while DMing and playing. perhaps why it is not allowed is because our grand DM does not have the book?

I don't have it, but I can get it most likely. We don't need it, but if there is something in it you have your heart set on I'm sure we can make some allowances.

(Crap. I hope this isn't a damn outrageously long post...)

It wasn't too long, there were many things that needed to be answered.

I did not include Abbadon since at that time we had heard nothing from him and you made the comment that he and michaeljearly had not responded, so you didn't expect them to still play.

The characters (and players) I used were Lalitil (me), Zomerus (Genzodus Thoth), Androsant (Zeneak), Bruenor (starworlf013), Tannar (Anodyzed), Oo (nijineko), and Aa (nijineko). So, 7 characters is what puts the 850k split to just over 121k apiece - the most recent number.

And nijineko, genzodus, and zeneak have all responded with no problems with Lalitil's use of the money. So, Anodyzed and starwolf - any problems? I hate to press the topic, but I'd ther make sure everyone is good so Tannar can get his money for his couple items, and we can move along again.

Of course - once approved this shopping will likely take Lalitil a couple hours, killing some of the time they have before sundown.

Sounds like a plan - we are going to need a description of the place, including the area surrounding it so that we can make plans for how to get in. I figure you know this, as it has been mentioned - but I figured it was worth repeating as a reminder so you could get it ready.

Some details that Lalitil will be looking to note the following items:
1) the frequency of the patrols past it
2) if any guards appear to be stationed near the door or if all walk around the outside
3) the availability of trees, shrubs, stones, etc to act as cover surrounding the keep
4) how far from the walls this cover may be
5) is there a inner courtyard past the main door or does the main door enter the keep proper?

Hmm, that's it for now, I think. :-)

there is a reason why my character's are approaching the knights.... i'd like the opportunity to pursue that to it's conclusion. if need be, i can pm the interaction with goh and it can be inserted after the fact. then they will take care of equipping. after i take care of those two little things, i fully intend to head for the castle, effectively re-joining the group. then those that need their share would have an opportunity to get it from Oo and Aa.

The keep is a normal sized structure, rather primitive in some aspects of its design, while clearly updated with new pieces in places, more modernized. The guards will seem to wish to be as far away from the door of the keep as possible, knowing well enough that many had already died supposedly taking a single step within, but they must still keep within a 200-foot radius. The frequency is roughly one man every seventy feet, considering that some are moving while others are bored and standing still. Some that are beyond the maximum distance tend to wander, favoring the ability to see both another man to one side and a glimpse at the keep's door on the other. Trees are placed surprisingly dense, and it never lets up until a twenty foot clearing surrounding the keep, empty and dry save for a number of bushes and shrubs (of insubstantial size) gathering around dark crevasses and cracks. Some trees are actually thick enough to hide a man if he knows what he's doing, and the branches are indeed strong enough to hold his weight. From beyond the keep walls, it appears to be surrounded by a wall, fifteen feet high. The door is a conical shaped opening, devoid of any type of barre that might have once stood. Someone with good eyes could see that there was a small courtyard within before the keep is reached. The buildings within, if any, cannot be seen, but those from the city are quite a distance away. The keep walls to the closest building from the town is just over a mile away, but any building of true substance is nearly two.

I do believe I answered much of everything. If there is anything I missed or you would like to know, just shout.

As in, are the guards within the courtyard, or are they actually staying outside the wall as well?

i'd not underestimate them. npc's are not automatically inferior to pc's. there are some wonderful examples elsewhere on the forums of what 1st level kobolds (for example) can do to a much higher level party to reduce them to complete helplessness.

an experienced player should reasonably be expected to overcome even well played npc's... so my quibble is really just semantics. ^^ i fully expect us to be able to enter the castle pretty much when we decide, given the calibre of players we have.

So, if everyone else is confident that they can get in, once nijikeko gets to RP his stuff with the guards, it sounds like we'll be able to start making our way in.

Oh, and as long as the guards won't enter even the courtyard - that would likely be a good place to meet up as a group and enter the keep.

that method, while short or rp, would take only a few exchanges, rather than a protracted number of exchanges. i should be available on and off today, depending on what's happening at work.

what are the beliefs of the character? how "good" can you make it? you need to know what is good and what is not, as per your character's belief system. if you know the principals underlying the philosophy, then you will be able to figure out what your character needs to do. figure out what is your characters philosophy, and then run it through some paces of figuring out how it would fall out in the given situation. one thing that's interesting is if the character is still trying to figure out if some point or another of the belief system is really true or not.
