Looking at the concept art for the Tiefling ... I wish they'd used a different concept. Maybe from someone who knew anatomy ... a tail as thick as the woman's leg just won't fit anywhere, and horns that big and heavy would snap her neck.

I think you might be exaggerating just a tinsy bit on the horns thing... As to the tail -- what tail? That picture doesn't show one.

She's turned with her butt facing us. See that thing sprouting out of her butt with the segmented mail armor? That's the root of her tail.
Compare that to the other Tiefling pictures in the PHB; same gigantic tails.
I'll give you the horns, but with tails like that they only have room for saurian hips and a reptilian cloaca, not the hips and behinds we know.

Well if we're going to nitpick. That just the armor covering the tail, it's going to be much broader than the actual tail. Look at the first wallpaper and the shoulder armor/arm thickness ratio.
