Interesting. I like the feature to be able to create a graphical representation of your character. I wish they had shown some screenshots from this digital table they keep touting though.

I saw something like that on the D&D staff blog forum... let's see...

There we go-

Three screenshots of the character generator-
Oh wait, one's the same as in the article, but the other two are different.
Also, once again, the media gets it wrong:
"make it feasible to play a game of D&D with your friends over the Internet and without having to pull out the thick, iconic, hardcover books that have for so long been an essential element to the experience. "
As far as I can tell, you still need the books- I don't think that GameTable is going to include all the rules you need. (And, as I noticed was posted elsewhere, we now live in a world where 300 pages is "thick". Gods help us.)

Nope, the media was actually right this time.
You missed one of the primary benefits of D&D insider, the Rules Database. Read about it here at one of the Developer's blogs:

The Rules Database allows you to see all rules released up to the day in an online database, so you don't need the books at all if you subscribe to D&D insider. Even if you don't subscribe, it still gives you a nice reference which will tell you the book/page to look up the rule yourself.

They still haven't said what the monthly fee is going to be for being a member of D&DI though, have they? At the previous price point they were floating which they said was comparable to the subscription costs of many of the MMPOGs out there, that would be somewhere in the range of $15 a month. That's the equivalent then of spending about $180/yr to "rent" your access to the online rules.

Hadn't thought of it like that- GameTable is going to suck if none of your potential remote players can afford that fee. Has anyone heard if GameTable can be used peer-to-peer after you install it (without an ongoing DDI subscription), or if they're really expecting people to pay MMO prices and still have to provide their own content and imaginations?

If I recall correctly from the session I attended with the WoTC folks, no, you can't play it peer-to-peer. It is online only.
But on the other side, each person with a DDI subscription gets a number of "gift card thingees" per month where they can give someone a 24 hour subscription to DDI to play in their game.
Hopefully more information will be forthcoming soon. DDI is going into a beta phase next month, so I imagine they'll be revealing more details.

so, has WotC created a way to digitally share seven layer dip and beer?
