I don't care if they're broken, unpainted, archaic, non-official, homebrew, downright ugly, or made out of last nights corn. I want to see pictures of your beloved miniatures. Massive group shots encouraged :D

Will post a few here, but will have to take a few down somewhere else I think as I have too many jpgs on already. :)

Ok, will have to delete first, then post. Duh!!!

Gnorg was a gnoll character for a D&D 2e game, where I got to play one session as a gnoll before I got Kobayashi Maru'd and reincarnated as a human. And I worked a long damn time on that mini.

No idea where the goblins came from, I've had them forever.

The Oro and my modded Wolfhound are my best Btech jobs. The rest are pending touchups.

And the Citadel ogre is my most recent work, first shot at something more than flat colors and drybrushing.

My Battletech army. The plan is to have a full regiment and a battalion of vehicles.

The Gear in the middle is just a proxy for now.

Hey Mead, give us a better look at your minis. Closer so we can see some details. I have a few Battletech mechs I have painted a few decades ago that look pretty bad. I use them for when I GM sci-fi games but have been on a shelf for years. :(

Mead

Well I can save you some time on the Battletech stuff.. mostly it's just exactly like the Wolfhound above, with different base colors. I'll shoot the nicer ones though.

Here's a closeup of the Airborne - sorry about the cat hair, it's inevitable around here.

And this gives me an idea.. might start photographing the primed mini before painting so I can see it at a zoomed-in level without exploding my eyeballs.

 Hey Mead, you found out the same thing I found out. A mini that looks pretty good just looks like crap when using a macro. You should see some of my minis. Some that look like a total hottie in real life look like a two hundred year old zombie at 500% magnification. Actually, I think the same thing holds true with most real people. Very few people can stand that kind of scrutiny. Why do you think magazines uses the airbrush so much?

It doesn't look like much. No paint, it isn't fantasy.

However it is all mine. I made the master, I made the mold, I poured the molten lead.

It's my first successful metal casting. It is poured into a mold I made for casting resin models. RTV rubber is still Vulcanized and can take the heat.

Holding something like that in you hands makes one rather happy. So the casting is not clean, what we buy in the store in a plastic bubble is pretty much in the same condition. Take a bit more time and clean it up a little and that my friend is something you can hang your hat on. May want to not even paint it so as to showcase it. Congratulations!

1/2500 scale model. It wasn't intended for gaming at all.

Yes the casting can use some additional cleaning. You should have seen it before I took the gates and pour stub off.

It is a "taj" (dagger) class Klingon scout. 121 meters long (The model is 1.9 inches.)

Here is a resin pull from the same mold fully painted.

And the same model, the original on the left the unpainted resin copy on the right.

As for how much cleaning the pieces need after casting I understand. What kind of mold material do you use? I used to use a plaster type of material. We would recycle the old stuff and mix it with about 50% new stuff. And the release material also needs to be cleaned off. And all the sprue's need to be cleaned off as well. Yeah, I remember how much work goes into cleaning a casting. Still, your piece looks good.

Silicon RTV rubber. Great stuff, and good for 30 to 60 copies depending on what you are pouring.

Release material for the lead is talcum powder. I use a waxed based release spray for resin and for making molds. Do not forget the release when making molds. Otherwise your master is embedded in a nice block of silicon.

For those that wonder the professional miniature makers (at least the pewter ones) use a natural rubber mold, it lasts longer and is vulcanized as part of the mold making process. The originals are placed in the mold disk. The disk placed into the vulcanizing machine and bang, mold for a spin caster. I watched this process at the Ral Parth factory in 1995. You better not forget the talcum either, or that one is a solid disk.

I imagine the plastic minis are made with an injection molder. Much more expensive process mold wise.

For me the average mold is a 20 dollar item.

I should have more minis to show in a bit as I am assembling and painting Ogre minis.

The manticores were done with acrylics.

I mostly use craft paints. I like the translucency, so that I can play around with painting green on top of yellow vs. green on top of grey. It doesn't show well in the picture, but the wing panels are brown over a bone white, which gave them a textured, membranous look that I was pleased with.

And now, a few trolls and a fog wraith. (These are enamel.)

mrken
07-04-2008, 02:09 PM
Wow!!! The wraith looks real good. You have given me new inspiration to maybe paint mine. The way you made it looks like fog there at the head and hands made me think of using cotton balls to give it that fog like look. That was really good painting.

Ok, so this guy above was what I had, and at the time it was one of my best pieces. So then I found Jeremie Bonamant and Miniature Mentor, and decided to do something about it. Ditched my Anita's craft paint (well, gave to a buddy who does scenery), bought the P3 line from Privateer Press, some good brushes, better lighting, etc etc.

I've only "finished" the cloak and the Continual Flame on his weapon. Trying to get a jewel effect on the cross on the shield (which looked better on the first iteration, going from bad to worse here =), plus the shading isn't right. And I haven't even touched the face or armor yet.

Here's another one I'm practicing on:

Finished scraping some more old job off, redid the weapon shaft and the face. The old paint is easy to remove, cos I used to really slab on the primer, plus the first few layers are thick Anita's craft paint.

I should have scraped the cloak before repainting it, but I've got it looking ok now, and it's mostly smooth surfaces anyway. I suspect a corner is going to chip before long anyway, may as well enjoy it while it lasts. Figure if I really wanted to do it right I'd have to get another copy of this guy, there's too much primer in hard to reach areas. Good practice though.

If you're trying to remove paint, soak the mini in Simple Green for a few hours, then scrub it with an old toothbrush. The paint will come off pretty well, even in the crevices. It will eventually soften plastic, but it's pretty safe for plastic with a shorter soak.

Twist of greenstuff, lines textured with one of those rubber wedge paint brushes, forget the name of it.

It's supposed to be a Continual Flame spell, so that's why part of the weapon head is still showing.

These are some amazing models.
I am perhaps one of the worst model-painters in the world.

My hands shake more than a hypoglycemic, mercury-poisoned alcoholic with Multiple Sclerosis, in the throes of heroin withdrawal. ...on uppers.

When I played WH40k, I played as the Ulthwe Eldar and just sprayed my figurines with black base paint, and left them like that. I couldn't risk or trust my own hands to detail them.

Ill see if I can get a pic or two up.

Yeah, I've stripped minis before, but the deal with the cloak was, I painted the cloak up nice, liked it, then decided to redo everything else too, so I picked away the old layers and repainted the rest, but there's no way in heck that I'd strip it now even with the cloak painted on the old stuff. Thus, I'd get another copy if I was going to change anything else or redo the cloak.

Might get another one and try some different techniques, just to see how it turns out.

Can do. They're reaper minis, and at most I'd want 2 or 3 done. Some examples

Hey, GG...

Not to interupt...but...

I'm pretty adept at painting minis...since i'm heading to our meet up in dallas on the 23rd, i can bring a few examples if you like...

(amidst the sound of crickets chirping...)

So....anyone ever consider maybe doing a minis painting competition by post?

I've seen it done before...it shouldn't be a problem, given we can post our pictures in the thread...

might be fun, if there's enough people envolved...

To my knowledge there has never been a mini painting contest. Would be cool though I think, but would best be run by someone who can post a poll. This way everyone can vote only once. We could have a month to paint and then post the photo. Then a month for everyone to vote. Or would it be better to have three weeks to paint and post the photo and then a week to vote?

Could do the same with terrain, and maybe even do the same with homegrown adventures or dungeons, and short story fiction. Would be nice to see some of the talent that posts around here. You know there is more than a ton of talent with some of the names we got here, old and new.

Alexei_von_Carstein

The way we ran it before, it had a structure similar to a tourney bracket...
(just for simplicity's sake)...after the parameters are set...fantasy...sci-fi...vehicles...monsters or other large models...we pair off two people at a time...they have exactly one week to find a figure and one month to complete it...on a given day...they must submit photos at different angles to show the figs paint job...the judges...not participating have one day to compair each of the pairs...and vote...judges decisions are final...and the winners move up the bracket...then it starts again...one week to find a fig, a month to finish...if you want, each level can change...month one is fantasy...month two is monsters...etc...and it doesn't have to be a month...the timeline is subjective...on other sites we had a credit prize for amazon...but maybe someone can come up with something else...like i said just a thought...

SilenzZzz
06-16-2009, 09:44 PM
i would gladly participate in a mini painting contest ... i think having a timeframe would be good tho ... and also the possibility of limiting the contests to mini's from the same set ... so the 'canvas' is equal ....

or you could have someone with a badly moulded mini from the 80's going up against a GW multi part plastic peice ... both painted great ... the GW peice will likely get more votes.

Alexei_von_Carstein
06-17-2009, 04:44 AM
That's part of the fun...we could set up parameters...but i think the best thing to do is say...pick from Reaper, GW, or Privateer Press...since they are the most common around the country, unless someone else can come up with another company or companies...

as for types of models...as in age...i've seen great GW and PP look like they've been dipped in the paint pot...while i've seen Ral Partha look spectacular...like i said before...judges decision...

When and how?

Alexei_von_Carstein
06-18-2009, 02:29 PM
Depends on how many people have an interest...i'm thinking if we have about six or eight people...plus a judge or two or three...

We can figure out what and the where after that...so if you know anyone who is interested let them know...then someone can start organizing...

You say your minis don't set flat on the table? Try using a flat metal file. Lay it on the table and run your mini back and forth on the file. You need to be careful to keep the mini flat so as to continually file it flat or you can round the edges. I like to use a very aggressive file, and it will need to be cleaned out every so often.

I recently spent time cleaning off the work area/bench that I use for fig painting. It's in my home office, and got a little cluttered when my wife started working from home. But I have finally persevered and have managed to clean up the space so that I can start painting there again!

Here's a shot of the twin computer desks.

http://www.johnprime.com/photos/gaming_room/computer_desk.jpg

Attached to the left corner desk is a straight desk, where my work bench is at. I've got two shots of it below.

http://www.johnprime.com/photos/gaming_room/workbench_one.jpg

http://www.johnprime.com/photos/gaming_room/workbench_two.jpg

There's a hutch with cabinets and shelves above the desk where, where I keep various supplies for the workbench. Below the desk is a rolling file-cabinet, which has supplies in it, various household papers and part of my dvd collection. Right under the desk are more supplies, mostly casting supplies. I want to get another rolling cabinet for under there but I think I'm going to get one of those Tupperware ones instead of the kind for the desk like the current one is.

Thanks.

When I was looking to switch from my old desk to a new one, I looked for quite a while before I found the modular desk system that I'm using now. Having the two semicircular desks is nice because I just turn my chair 45 degrees and I can switch from my gaming based computer to my work computer.

Or at least that was the idea before my wife moved into the office!

Heavens no, she'd never get any work done! ;)

Actually, she's not working from home anymore, but my plan is to shift the right one to the right about 3 feet or more and put a filing cabinet that I have in the opening it creates.

Right now, the filing cabinet is to the right of the right desk, so it will just be a matter of shuffling things around.

So yeah, I'm slowly becoming a miniature whore. I don't know how to paint so all these minis are prepainted. Most of them are Heroscape, which is an awesome game, some are D&D, and a few are heroclix. I've never played Heroclix, I just bought each one for 50 cents so I can have some fill in guys, the generic bad guys and what not.

Here is my full collection of Minis I use for D&D.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200298.jpg

Here are the 5 Heroes of The Campaign I DM.

Left to Right: Belgerath (Human Druid), Halek (Half-Orc Barbarian), Colin Slide (Human Fighter), Frank (Human Cleric of Pelor), Raithar (Elven Ranger) and his boar, aptly named, Boar.

http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200296.jpg

There was a wizard, but he drowned, and a Rogue, but the Player left for college.

So now onto everybody else

My Undead

http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200301.jpg

There was a guy off to the left but he got cut off.

My Orcish dudes.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200310.jpg
(definitely gonna need better looking Orcs)

My Knightly Guys

http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200311.jpg

My Dwarves and Barbaric Fightin' guys.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200313.jpg
(sorry the pictures a little fuzzy)

My Romans.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200314.jpg

Halflings/Gnomes and Kobolds
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200312.jpg

My Generic Monsters.

http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200315.jpg

And lastly, everybody else who doesn't really fit in an aforementioned category.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx317/Kvicks59/P1200316.jpg

So these aren't ALL my Mini's, just the ones I generally use in D&D.

Yeah, I really should learn how to paint ;)

Made and painted in 2005:

Barbosa Alric, Techpriest - This is my character in a Dark Heresy campaign I participated in. The gray is existing GW parts, heavily converted. The green is all original. I haven't gotten around to painting him yet.
Made in 2010:
