Check out this new article Wizards of the Coast posted recently:

D&D Miniatures: Vintage and Standard Tournament Formats (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mit/20080124a)

Starting on April 15th, 2008, the DCI adds a new format to D&D Miniatures tournament play. The Standard format creates a more dynamic metagame. The current format, now called Vintage, allows play from any expansion that receives an official update.

Vintage?!!? Vintage?!?!?! Darn you, WOTC, darn you straight to the Nine Hells!!!!!!!!

PS-Hhhhmmmm... upon actually reading the article, it seems as though they might eventually update all the sets. Maybe I'm misreading. I've gotta be...

Wizards of the Coast is committed to the promise that “you can bring your plastic with you” into the next edition of the Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures Game by announcing that all sets will be updated to the new version of the D&D Miniatures rules.
Seems pretty clear cut. WoTC is the best in the business for a reason.

This is good news indeed. If only they release rules for updating 3.X content to 4E. Maybe somewhere down the line they will do just that :)
