View Full Version : How many RPG forums do you typically frequent?

Farcaster

I'm curious - isn't that how these all start??? In anycase, I was wondering today how many other roleplaying forums our members actively frequent. As for me, just keeping up with all the topics on this forum is a full load. I occasionally visit wizards.com community, and the forums over at enworld.org. I almost never post there though, so I couldn't categorize myself as active in either.

How about you? How many and which ones?

I also visit wizards forums with some regularity. I guess my posting there was always a bit sporadic depending how much time I had on my hands. My visiting there has declined greatly since I found this site and the 4e nonsense changed Wizards. It just never really felt like home.;)

I also visit enworld occasionally, although I was never very active there.

I visit the forums of a local game shop once in a while. I used to be the top poster there. It was surprisingly active and friendly, until the spam started coming in like rain in a typhoon. Everyone became increasingly irritated that every other post was spam for porn sites and cheap airfare. The owner deleted every account and made it private. Then the site was hacked and down for over a month. Then he changed hosts. Now the site is nearly dead as only a handful of members bothered to continue.

There was another site I used to visit daily. It was a site where my PBP games were held. It suddenly fell off the edge of the internet one day without warning. Myself and another Mod tried repeatedly to contact the sites owner via his home and work emails, but never got any response as to what happened. :(

Currently, I find myself visiting here most often. Lucky you :p ! There's no place like home, there's no place like home,...

I peruse bits of RPGNet (http://www.rpg.net) from time to time, and recently I've started frequenting Basic Roleplaying Central (http://www.basicroleplaying.com), especially since the author of the upcoming Basic Roleplaying (http://www.chaosium.com/article.php?story_id=246) omnibus answers questions there.

Hey cool, I was considering doing a thread just like this.

Anyway, I voted "more than 5" because I visit:
Eden Studios (http://p205.ezboard.com/bedenstudiosdiscussionboards)

Cafe Risque (http://p088.ezboard.com/biridiumbooksmultiversalroleplaying)

The RPG Site (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/index.php)

The Master's Council (http://www.skyseastone.net/masters/index.php)

The ShadowRun (http://theshadowrun.net/index.php)

rpg.net (http://forum.rpg.net/)

Misfit Studios (http://www.misfit-studios.com/forum/) (Based in Toronto for our Canadian roleplaying brethren)

And of course, here!

so most of my activity is in that Wizard's forum. I used to post elsewhere in the forums (rules related: races, spells, feats, etc...) but a lot of those turned into quote fest pissing matches, so I pretty much frequent the CO now because they play and think the way I do...

I frequent RPG.net, Atomic Think Tank (M&M), Traveller's Aid Society, Pen & Paper of course, Citizens of the Imperium, EN World, Hero Games, True20 Forums, Steve Jackson Games, Green Ronin, Ronin Arts, Atomic Sock Monkey, EABA, etc

I used to frequent WotC for both D&D and d20 Modern, but I found that it is very confrontational on those boards. So, I limit my posts there. I frequent the Basic Role-Playing forums often lately in anticipation of the release of the new edition of the Basic Role-Playing system by Chaosium. I just recently discovered the Retro-Clone games by Goblinoid Games, and so I joined their forums as well. I very occasionally check out GURPS, Mongoose, and White Wolf forums as well. Lastly, my group has a private forum that we use for most of our RPG posts, and general BS.

as well as this one..

RMrpg.com (Rolemaster and a lot of non-d20 games)

ukroleplayers.com (place to advertise mainly UK based games, clubs and conventions)

I'm a member of wizards, and the forums from a local club at my university.

Wizards has too much stuff going on, and the local forums are as dead as they come.

I mainly go here since I get good answers to my questions and I don't have to worry about my post being buried before anybody even looks at it.

Great community here, keep it up!

I was amazed to see how many members are active in other forums. However, I am not ashamed to say that I currently only visit this one. I visited Wizards for several weeks before I found this website. Once I started posting here I knew I was home. I do visit other forums on occasion but only to read. I am drawn more to quality (PNPG) than quantity (WOTC). The knowledgeable and experienced members here put other forums to shame.

While I used to visit a great deal of non-RPG forums before I revived my love for pen and paper gaming, I have pretty much gone dormant in them all since I have taken up residency here. Between visiting PNPG, working from home, reading novels, and reading pen and paper material, I have no time, nor desire, to "shop around" :p

I have several hobbies and they all have a few forums.

Gaming, in order of activity: rpg.net, local Meetup site, Steve Jackson, Dumpshock, here. I drop in on Paranoia-Live and yog-sothoth.com (Cthulhu) from time to time.

Motorcycles: Sport-Touring.net, Colorado Sportbike Club, Sportbikes.Net. I drop in on the SV forums, Transalp, Hayabusa.org, and MRA (local motorcycle racing group).

Computers: slashdot, unix.com, currently hanging out on phpbuilder.com.

As to mailing lists: Shadowrun, Sun-Managers, Virginia Sage, Colorado Sage, General Sage, Colorado Linux, Colorado Honda Sport-touring Association.

That's all I can think of off hand. The first two or three on each are the ones I generally have up all the time and the others I'll drop in on when the "standards" aren't as busy or don't have threads I'm interested enough in to post.

I prefer mailing lists to fourms. Less work on my part for the same degree of content. I check a dozen mailing lists in less time thant one fourm.

Tesral, you could setup subscriptions to the forums you are interested in and receive an email when any new posts are made or even a daily digest if you prefer. Of course, you still have to login to be able to reply.

Ayup, and there be the rub. I prefer not to subscribe, since I check the fourm at least once a day in any case. I just get an inbox full of notifications.

Tesral strikes me as a person who has too many daily emails as it is :D. One thing I've really enjoyed about these polls is everybody seems to answer honestly. Polls on forums, in general, are worthless as often too many users pick the one answer that tells you nothing. Then you start to wonder how many people just voted for the hell of it and if the other votes, for the real choices, are reliable. Good stuff here ;)

I don't know of any other forums that are even close to this one, in any respect. RPG.net probably has a nice community but I don't know many of those people are active gamers. Just about anybody coming here is looking for a game, for players, or for gaming resources.

I believe it's owned by a gaming company but not one that puts out games.

http://www.skotos.net/

It even has its own forum. But rpg.net may simply be a second project that happens to be owned by Skotos.

I had only been on WotC untill I saw a mention about this forum. Like was said earilier, the WotC boards seem to be a contest between a select few that are always on there. Some of those same few seem to get a lot of joy out of trashing others on there. Since coming on board here, I am mostly on this forum.

well, let's see. i check 4 forums on a regular basis, including here... and i check another 30 or so on an infrequent basis, and i keep tabs on about 25 yahoo groups aside from the above. ^^

but since the poll was for active forums, i voted 4-5.

in case anyone was curious, here are the other three:

oolite, fun with retro gaming (http://www.aegidian.org/bb)

gametable, simple straightforward shared whiteboard java program for online rpg with real-time maps and dice. (gametable.galactanet.com/forum)

epic orb of the dungeonmaster +10 (dm/player all-in-one util for d20) lite version is cross-platform.... (www.crystalballsoft.com/messageboard)

I used to frequent WotC for both D&D and d20 Modern, but I found that it is very confrontational on those boards.

My sentiments exactly. I have been a member of the WotC forums since 2005, but I have posted perhaps four times, total. There are simply too many trolls/flamers/generally irritating postings there for my taste, and so I find myself coming here more often.

I really enjoy the forums here. While things have gotten a bit heated in the D&D forums with the release of 4th edition, people have maintained their respect for one another, despite differing opinions on the subject. That alone makes it worthwhile to come here with my questions and (rather limited) game knowledge.

If there was only one thing I could ask for, it would be more members coming here. After all, forums live and die by their members.

I agree, people tend to be more friendly here, I've been on WotC since 06 and I concur with Talmek, most people on there are not looking for information or civil discussions, but rather flame anyone that does not think like they do.

I visit between 4 or 5 RPG forums, and this has to be the friendliest. I've never been flamed or trolled here, but about half of the time I've spent on WotC has been in defense against a flamer.

Thanks Farcaster :whoo:

I've said this on another forum topic already but I agree. I only joined prior to 4th edition so I'm pretty new but the atmosphere is relaxing. I think this site has something that the wizards board lacks which is the fact that here it just seems like players from all sides of the map hanging out and talking about the games they enjoy to play and experiences they have had. It feels more like a social gathering than other sites I've been to. I've had some debates on here (mostly reguarding 4th edition) but I will agree with what has already been said..they've been debates and I haven't seen a single post yet that has disrespected a fellow gamer. I agree...this is a great place to be Farcaster :)

i just finished looking around on some of the other boards out there. man, im glad i picked this one. some people out there are just downright rude and snarky. for the most part, in here, even in a heated debate, civility isnt thrown out the window. its nice to be a part of a mature forum, instead of a troll and flame farm...

Some of the others are good of one thing and others for other things, but this one I come to because the members tend to be pretty intelligent, well informed and thoughtful. Perhaps I feel like most of the members would be friends if we didn't live so far apart.

I am now going on my 5th rpg forum in a matter of a week. I am an "all of the sudden" type of guy. Since I needed to find players for my game, I figure that the more I post in these kinds of websites, the better off I'll be picking up people. I must say, it has gone slower than I had hoped (Eltomate taps his finger nervously on the desk at the prospect of not finding any players). ;)

Anyway, I will say that of the four websites I have joined, this one is pretty together in comparison to the others. Not even Wizards is as good as this. This is very organized and I like this place a lot. Great job, Farcaster.

Other than here and Paizo, I look in on Canonfire and Candlekeep from time to time (gotta get my GH and FR fix, ya know, although Candlekeep has slowed down considerably since most hard core realms fans have no use for what they did with the setting for 4e)

EnWorld and RPGNet are dead to me.
