Just trying to move up in the "Poster Rank".

Does anyone else have the rule that the "Game Master" does not contribute to the Pizza & Coke fund?

In fact, groups that I've gamed with have had a lot of different food options, but the best was the couple that would grill steaks, chicken, and prepare pretty much full dinners for us. I don't see them much anymore, but I really appreciated them.

BTW, this seems like a perfectly legitimate topic to me.

Currently, our group tends to do pizza or eat beforehand, but I'd really rather vary meals than have the same thing repeatedly.

Back in the day, it used to be a standard rule that the DM/GM only brought himself and the gaming supplies (he/she's the entertainment). Everyone else provided the food.

When we played in the catholic church rectory, there was always fruit punch mix that we would make it so strong it was practically thick. That would get us bouncing off the walls to play really really late.

But in my later years, we'd just bring food with us to whom ever's house and it'd often get grilled. Or order pizza, or what have ya.

With my Dallas group we always split it pretty much evenly. The question never really came up as to whether the DM (me) should have to contribute or not. However, I think a better policy is that when ordering food, whoever is hosting the game should be exempted from paying. They're the ones that have to cleanup the mess after everyone leaves, and they were gracious enough to donate their living space at risk of any number of spills, or other calamities (for instance, frustrated players throwing large metal dice at high velocities)

The one family I played with in Germany let me crash on their couch overnight. My WOD game was EVERY Friday and one of the other 3 games was on Saturday. By saving me drive time the Saturday game would start earlier. Besides I was in no shape to drive after GM'ing for those nuts. I rented my couch space with fresh veggies from the local farmer's market. The lady of the house was a cooking addict so it worked well for all of us.

In my every-other-Sunday game, the GM (and host) always chips in for pizza in the evening.

Sometimes players also bring munchies, either to share or to devour rudely by themselves because they skipped lunch. I've been in both categories.

It depends how and where you game...

In my shed..(Where I host games)..I provide the tea/coffee & light/heat. The rest provide the food. It's a boon to me since the travel to go elsewhere is rather tiresome/tricky, so regardless I don't mind providing some drinks etc.

At our club who ever Dm's doesn't pay (their is a rental for the room) and if people want food they bring it along. We rarely have food other than sweets/crisps, it just detracts from the gaming...

At conventions...we buy drinks and food for the refferee...bribes?

That use to be our rule when playing D&D on Friday's night in the college days.

Now, the funny thing is that as we grew older and got Jobs, we started having LAN Parties once a month on Sundays, we started early at 10:00 am, and the host was in charge of having ready an array of "Tacos" (Mostly shredded beef) for the rest of the group for breakfast. Later in the day we will go out for Lunch.

Ah, fond memories of Taco Bell and gaming.

Back in '92 a friend and I were hungry. So we walked to the Taco Bell and came out of there with 15 dollars of food. I still wonder how we spent so much on .59 cent tacos.

You must have intestines of iron, Moritz. $15 worth of Taco Bell is enough to give the runs to a small village.

Intestines of iron

Look it's a new GURPS advantage!

Actually, while I don't recall ever spending $15 in Taco Bell, I can pretty well expect to spend about $10 or so.

15 now days is reasonable for 2 people at taco bell.

But back in '92, that's like 3 of everything plus cinni sticks.

In high school and college we would also split the cost of food and drinks. Most of us had jobs and coupons so we ate well and often.

Nowadays it seems we meet beforehand and share a meal together. It is much simpler and cuts down on spills and greasy fingers. I personally hate it when people paw my books, dice, and so very expensive miniatures with greasy mitts.

Sometimes time does not permit a good meal so we all bring some snack food and drinks to share. Being grown-ups and health conscience, usually its fruits, popcorn, meats and cheeses, and brewed drinks like tea or low-sugar juices.

Should we ever get to the rice cake stage, I will run out into the snow and commit hari-kari

Off topic perhaps, but how is it though that the most expensive miniatures now are made of frikken plastic?

We usually brought our own food and drinks when we were younger, but now we usually bring stuff to share.

Oh yeah...

It's because of the cost of a barrel of oil!;)

Make sure you note the smilie that's along with the above comment!

Although Skunkape is in the ballpark with his answer, the real reason D&D miniatures are so expensive and made out of plastic is because they are collectible and the polymer they are cast from is more expensive than regular plastics. This polymer is durable, self-repairing (mostly) and the one concession (pathetic attempt to quell the masses) WotC over the price.

When asked this question I usually reply with, "God hates us so very much and this is his fiery retribution in the guise of a 30mm torment."

Actually, I was being somewhat sarcastic with my barrel of oil comment. That seems to be the answer these days as to why everything is so expensive, and yes I know that oil effects quite a few different commodities we buy, partly because it’s used for fuel and lubrication of machinery, etc, etc, but I think the biggest cost of the minis is, because they can more than anything else.

Heh!

There is hope on the horizon, it's from a company called Reaper! They've just started making pre-painted plastic versions of their minis, and the best part, you buy the ones you want, not some random box load!:D

I am curious about the Reaper plastic minis, it could be the answer many have been looking for.

I always feel that a DM whom demands others provide for him is a waste of skin. Most are unethical players on a power trip and not worthy of my time.

I DM most of the time and always bring snacks to share. We like to break for meals for my Sunday game, whether ordering in or just so everyone can use the microwave and eat without making a mess. On Wednesdays, it is usually a trip to Taco Bell right before the game starts which works for everyone.

I'm way ahead of you Skunkape......they are putting out a line of monsters that come in all our favorite flavors. The best part is that you get 10 of the exact same monster per unit purchased. The initial advertisement stated they will come in painted and non-painted minis.

I purchased a bunch of their new visible spell effects minis. They have prismatic walls, and mist banks and other minis of our favorite effects.

7.88 for a mini?

Kinda expensive when I would get mine for a quarter or 50 cents each.

The sets of 10 will be somewhere between 15 and 20 dollars for painted.

I'm about to start a new game in the next few weeks! The food rule will be as it always has: Food makes life better, bring some and be ready to eat mine. It's a celebration.

D&D is best played on a long day where there is food, talk, food, D&D, food, talk, D&D, and dead characters...er laughter and fun. ;)
