Crowblaze, who was still intent in looking at the specimen jars, didn't notice what was going on with Sparkle until the book dropped.

Upon Sparkle's request, he approaches the table, getting between the table and Sparkle, motioning for her to step back. He holds his longspear pointed towards the figure, looking for signs of more hostile movement.

He looks at the hand to see if he can figure out what sort of creature it belongs to.

the hand appears to be humaniod in build and size. Sparkle, you feel the bile in your stomach rise as you note that the flesh on the hand has been completly removed from the appendage. Crowblaze and Sparkle both note that the red cloth is actually a cloth caked with blood, this is the reason the cloth appears rather stiff, and also explains the deep red coloration. bits of caked blood lie on the table, having broken free of the blanket when the arm moved.

Crowblaze watches the creature for a little longer, showing no emotion. He is unconcerned about the blood or implications of experimenting on living creatures in such a vile manner.

Crowblaze tells Sparkle, "I don't think there is anything left for us here. This creature appears to be no threat if we do not disturb the book, and I don't believe there is anything to further our quest in this room."

He then bends down to see if he can see any details about the book (without touching it). Is it written in a language he knows? How old does it appear? Does it smack of the arcane?

"If the book is important, we should take it" Rok says in a very serious voice.
"If nothing else, than to destroy what evil is contained inside of it to prevent it from falling in someone else's hands. These deeds must stop." Rok gets out a flask of oil and a torch. It appears that he wants to "cleanse" the place.

a wet weezing sound issues from underneath the blanket, a small stirring shakes bits of dried blood off of the ragged cloth.

Crowblaze, you look at the book and as you watch the rune encrusted cover, the symbols seem to move, like muscles under flesh, the cover is a pale white. the runes are shape and jagged, it almost hurts the eyes to stare at them the runes are written in a deep red.

Highlight for a hint (The book is written in a dialect of infernal)

(Unless there's something obvious that would prevent Seryl from exploring this possibility) Seryl approaches the figure underneath the blanket, concerned that the person/thing underneath it is hurt or in need of healing. She reaches for the blanket and throws it off.

With a sound like ripping cloth, the blanket is pulled from the table. underneath the fabirc is the blod covered form of a man. The mans lips move, and tears well up in his eyes at the sight of party. his body spasms and convulses as oxygen reaches the patchs of his body that are now exposed to air. you realize that the mans body has been completely flayed of his flesh. the pulsating muscles and viens clearly visable.

you wonder how the man could still be alive, until you notice several small vials. upon your inspection you deduce that the contents of the vials were healing potions. and minor ones at that. it seems that the owner of this domain has been torturing or experimenting on his captives, then healing them just enough so that they survive. (you also realize that if potions can heal the man, so can your magic.)

THe mans form jerks and spasms as Seryl lays her hands on his twisted and bloodied body. as the party watches, the mans skin begins to regrow in several places, the mans breathing eases, and his eyes become more clear and focused.

shaking, and weak the man moves to sit up, but after a moment is content to rest his back against the cool stone wall. "Thanks, May Lyindril's blessings fall upon you. I am Surish. from a small town in the valley near the base of this mountain. My son Rulmath and several others from the town. I found a passage several feet above and followed it down here. I managed to kill some kind of humanoid with pale white skin and huge black eyes, it fought like a demon with stone weapons. I was making camp when this creature, it looked like a man, pale as the others in elegant robes appeared. before I could react it cast several spells, many I think, it had in a ring and an amulet that it wore. I was stuck. unable to move as it ran its tests on me, my flesh. that book, its some kind of relic of an older civilization. It, that man, his jet black robes blended into the surrondings as if made from the shadows. I could never tell if he left, or was standing next to me until i felt the sharp pains of another test. (the man stops, his breath coming faster as he becomes caught up in his tale.) I couldn't move.....all I could do was scream, and pray. it seemed amused to let me pray. it would talk to me as if it hadn't seen the world outside in decades, fascinated by what I told it. I never told it the truth though....stupid thing. I told it that the world was covered in Ice, that few things lived above, and that we had lost much of our powers with magic, and that most of the gods had long since left. it cackeled then. like a man enjoying a good game of cards. its eyes, or the red orbs that served as them, glowed brighter.

Please, we must kill that thing before it can find my son and the others. My equipment must be her somewhere. I never saw the thing take it. I saw the man stuff something under this table. it might be there. but be careful, i couldn't see if the area was trapped."

You, sir, have my protection, and we will seek to protect your son and the other villiagers from this vile shadow. It seems that the evil you have faced is probably related to the quest we have accepted."

Crowblaze' mood lightens. He stares at the table and what is under it suspiciously. "Possibly trapped you say? Unfortunately, this is not my specialty."

As Rok works on ruining the table, Surish rumages though the room for anything of value. Finding several pots of ingrediants he hands some to Crowblaze and Sparkle and mixes the rest in a small iron pot salvaged from a shelf.

You don't know much about what Surish created, but you do realize that the potion is not magical, and that most of the items that the man choose and mixed were varieties of poisons.

Greenbrier (a slow moving poison that slows bodily movement)
Hackweed (slows oxygidation to body)
Oak sap (thickens the mixture, also keeps the liquid on what ever it touches)

as well a a few other powders and liquids that you don't recognize.

Damage

The Wandering Bard
Monday 05-26-2008, 05:16 PM
the sturdy table collapses under the blow of the attack, the damage was not enough to break a small glass vial filled with a smokey vapor how ever (you got really luck with a roll :) 1 away from the glass breaking ) inside the table you see an assortment of small books, journels most likely as well as a large canvas sack. as Rok removes the sack, the man shuffles over and digs though its contents. with a pleased sigh he takes out two vials of blue liquid and drinks them. as the party watches, color returns to the mans palid skin, his eyes seem to clear even further as the pain subsides.

"thank you my large friend. That was just what was needed. It i'm still a little sore but I can get along find now." the man begins pulling out several items. A suit of very fine supple black leathers, studded with metal rivets, dulled with a black grease to reduce the chances of light glittering of the metal. he also pulls on a pair of thick black gloves and boots. a quiver of arrows, several daggers which he places all over his person in various places. a small bow is placed in the quiver as well. then with a smile he pulls out a long thin curved sword. its metal is dulled by a black grease as well but it is obvious to everyone that the blade is very well made, and twin blue saphires sit in the hilt of the blade. the man fastens the blade to his side.

"Thank you all again, I believe however that we have to make a choice. will you help me find my son and the others, or do you wish to part ways. I will continue after them either way."

Mursharr notices that the ground is becoming ever increasingly more moist. in several places he can see the small trickles of water as it seeps out of cracks running down the tunnel. just as the tunnel seems like it couldn't get any tighter the tunnel widens suddenly and the party finds themselves in the honeycomb like structure of the caverns. the party emerges from the smaller tunnel to stand on a wide ledge looking down over what appears to be an underground lake. the area is lit to a dim shadowy world by massive patches of glowing fungus. (the area is light enough for a anyone with out any special visions to see 50' night vision can see very well, and low-light vision can see 100ft.) Surish appears out of the shadows, his sword has gone missing, he now holds his small curved bow. the man jestures to a set of, what appear to be individual ledges at a close to regualar pattern that could easily work as stairs. they lead down towards the lake.

After a couple moments Mursharr takes a step back from the ledge and draws his attention back to the party. As Surish notes the 'steps', Mursharr hesitantly nods to him. He then points to the man and one side of the path, followed by pointing to himself and the other side, placing himself against the wall of the cavern. the party makes their way down the steps. after traveling for nearly 400ft. down the side of the cavern, the party emerges on the shore of what appears to be an underground lake. the low drone of the drum sounds in every ones ears (-1 to listen checks for now.) the village consists of roughly 2 dozen huts that form a C around the alter, the huts are in 4 rows of 6 with different spacing between them, making it impossible to see the alter from the groups position. there is no one that Barravas or the others can see near the last row of huts (closest to party) and they are about 50ft. from where the party is standing.

the cavern is very wide and long, the village is only on the shore of the lake. the party would be able to go around the village to the left and have a vast amount of room to move around.

the cavern looks to be, from wall to wall a mile wide. and is so long that even BArravas cannot see the sides. the village in in the center most part of the lake shore which is on the right at the base of the stairs. the village itself is only 600ft. long, and roughly the same wide. the lake fades into the darkness, which Barravas can assume means that the lake is huge, and the party would be unable to transverse at the moment.

(If any part of this is unclear please let me know I will try to explain it another way. also I'm working on a map to make it easier.)

After the commotion on the dias the thin black skinned creature throughs back its ragged cloak revealing a thin glittering shirt of chainmail, and a long thin bladed sword, as well as a long thin dagger. It moves into a defensive position its back facing the villages, his face staring in the direction of Rok, who fired to fire at it. "MEDDELERS...(its voice hisses) How dare you interrupt me. I will add your souls to my sacrifice." the thin and lanky creature looks to the shorter squat creature at its side, the smaller creatures skin is milky white, large eyes gaze at Rok clearly able to see in the dark. its lips are pulled back revealing jagged broken teeth. it pulls a large stone axe, from its holster on his back.

"kill".......the word barely leaves the things mouth before a curved blade bursts from its chest. A thick black gloved hand reaches around from behind the chainmail wearing humanoid. it pulls the black creatures head up exposing its throat. the man's scimitar raises to sllice the exposed neck when the creature seems to flex, throwing Surish from its back. the man lands on his back, several feet from the dias, the wind knocked from his lungs and his eyes blurred from the impact.

Mursharr you are 40ft. from the dias, and behind one of the huts, I figure you can lean around it and fire. also with the hieght of the huts (6ft. tall) and the height of the Dais, shooting from this range shouldn't be and issue for line of sight.

OOC: ok, I've been trying for a few days to get my maping software to work on my new computer (with Vista, the operating system from $%&#) it doesn't seem to be working right so I will try to be as descriptive as possible for clarity sake.

Think of the cavern as a large rectangle. the party entered it from stairs that emerged from the bottom center (the bottom is the long side) to the left the cavern fades from view do to its size and the darkness, to the right 50ft. from the stairs is a lake, the lake reaches across the cavern (but only takes up 1/4 of the rectangle. ) the village is built on the shores of the lake. in a semi circle the Mouth of the C faces the lake. the Dias is in the center of the C. the village it self is made up of several huts that form three rows of C's (its confusing now I know.)

the party could have gone around the village completely and with out being spotted, but the characters noticed the villagers from the town that ROK was looking for, as well as Surish's son is tied to the large dias at the center of the town. after a few moments the party realizes that the villagers (from the surface)are going to be killed by two beings on the dias. thats where the battle began.

ROk went to the left and fired Kelgores Fire bolt, from his ring. you went right, and followed the lakes shore, the rest of the party infiltrated the huts, and is making its way to the center to the dias.

(I hope this helps, but I get the feeling that I might have just made it more confusing....)

the rat swarms engage the lich, the biting wall of fangs and claws slowly begin to tear the thing apart. (the swarm caused 8 damage (awesome rolling on part of the swarms) )

Barravas's axe finishes off one of the skeletons, bone chips and dust being all that is left of the shambling creature.

in return none of the skeletons managed to hit the dwarf.

the lich steps forward pulling a long gleaming dagger from its sheath on his side. he begins slicing wildly at the swarming rats. (rat swarm one takes enough damage that it fades from sight.)

The lich manages to evade the snapping clawing swarm of fur at his feet. as he moves away from the swarms of vermin however he is taken in the chest by a golden ray of fire. the liches dead dry skin bursts into flames. moments later Firefang slams the lich from his feet. lying on the ground he takes an arrow in the side (the trip attack lowered the liches AC just enough for Mursharr to get through, well played)

with a cry of rage the liches body burns away. (reaches 0 hp) but Seryl can still feel its evil in the area. (made a knowledge roll for Seryl) and she knows that the lich cannot be fully destroyed until the item that holds it's soul is destroyed.

all around the party the Grey creatures move nerviously look at each character. they hold no weapons and look very malnourished. they look more afraid then before when Rok gathers up his flaming chain.

The Human villagers now free from their bonds move to thank you, all except a small boy roughly 16 years of age. the boy rounds down to the edge of the water and kneels next to the floating body of a man clad in all black. the boy drags the man to shore. tears pouring from his eyes. the man moves slowly at first. struggleing to his feet. the boy moves his shoulders to support the man and walks towards the party.

"Thank you....." the words seem to weez. the sound of a punctured lung.

OOC: nope the lich's body was destoryed and the skeletons crumpled away after it.

Seryl know that the in order to become a lich, one most place its soul in an item from its past life that held value to it. the key is finding the item. when it is found it must be destroyed in order to finally destory the lich.

The Grimlocks whisper to each other in a grating voices, they point at the party and many step back in fear.

(now back to the villagers)

The man in black leather reaches out his hand to each of the party, taking it in his firm grip before he looks to the villagers. "I will escort these men home, they have families to attend to and many a crop has been nearly ruined. the village will not survive if they fail to return. I will pray for your safety, and I will tell your glittering friend of all you have done, (his eyes seem to say, Yes you know of whom I speak, but I can say no more) The gods willing, we will cross paths again."

the man turns and ushers the villagers towards the steps. stopping momentarily to step forward menacingly towards the Grimlocks, who flee several feet away from the man.

(Time to make a choice Ladies and Gents. What do you do now???)

the Runes etched onto the surface of the alter seem to form a strange and eerie partern. Crowblaze only takes a few seconds to realize that runes that are carved into the black stone serve a mulititude of purposes. first, the runes act as a shield to prevent the alter from physical harm. second, the runes are a summoning base, if blood fills the entire rune it opens a gate to a selected plane of existance, you can tell that they open a gate to one of the upper levels of the nine hells.

the alter is magically protected from harm, and no spells or items you have can destroy it. But who knows who the party will meet along the way that might be able to destory the cursed stone.

Rok: the Grimlocks manners suggest that the creatures are in being truthful, they have no real intention of attacking unless nessicary. The Grimlock cleric is a little more aggressive in his demeanor but you suspect that it is more for show then harmful intent. after all. It is trying to establish its dominance.

The fur clad creature reaches out its hand and takes the small shiny ring from the Crowblazes hand. it stares at it a moment it make sure that the item is in fact the one it desires. it slips the ring on its hand and for a brief second its body shimmers with a red hue, which quickly fades away.

Anyone who scores over a 15 on a knowledge roll for the Grimlocks knows: Grimlocks are a clanish goblinoid. They are very loyal to their clan leader. they have a small system of what some call a goverment. They follow their leader or cheiftain, the then honor a Druid known as a shaman to them, or a priest of their choosen god. After the spiritual arm is covered the Grimlocks heed the words of their elders normal a group of 4 or 5 of the oldest of the clan. the elders are also seen as wise men (in human terms) they listen to disputes, claims and voice their ideals to the cheiftain. after that the rest of the clan is on an equal standing.

the Priest of this clan is most likely preparing for a display of some kind to impress his clan mates and to establish that he is now both the cheiftain and the spiritual advisor. few people have ever witnessed the secretive rituals of the grimlocks. (but then again most people generally aviod the creatures)

Rok, You know that the speed that the lich can again assume a mortal form is based on the strenght of the Phlyacary the lich has chosen as his. the stronger the item and enchantments he has placed upon it the faster he can regenerate a body. you best guess is 24-36 hours. as the crystal is a very powerful item.

(Oh and yes this is Tony. I stole a friends log-in as I seem to be having issues with mine at the moment. Hopefully It will be resolved soon. Sorry for any confusion)

Woot, I have my log in back. Ok now back to business

(The Grimlocks are working on a Big Magic, they are following orders given to them by the Grimlock Cleric/cheiftain) the Ceremony will happen about the second watch. I was actually waiting to hear from sparkle and Seryl. Sparkle would, I figured want to take notes for her guild.)

i will wait a little longer then continue the story.

OK......

The fur covered preist moves up to the companions who are awake and says

"You watch big magic. Others be safe, no come near friends, when big magic here."

those that go and watch, (and those who wish to be awaken to witness the event) watch Cleric sway back and forth singing in the groveling tone that passes as the goblin language. the grimlocks that are present begin dancing in a circle around the glowing green moss pile. Then at the peak of of the cerimony the cleric asks if there are any challengers. if so they are to step forward and voice their reasons as to why they should be cheiftan. from the back of the group a tall gray beast of a Grimlock moves forward. he husses the crowd and is just about to speak. its mouth starts to move but no words come out. (spot check, or Knowledge arcana roll)

when the creature can't seem to find the words it needs to speak, the others pull him back into the crowd. the cleric raises his hands in the air and cries out "Unthear" (goblin for light) and the staff he holds flares into brilliant golden light.

at the light, the assembled creatures cover their eyes and fall before the cleric in adoration.

Seryl, you estimate that the power of the crystal will be able to rebuild that liches body in about 24 hours.

Sparkle and Crowblaze: You both recognize the staff the cleric wields is a Flaming Staff, and the light it gave off is just a side effect to the enchantments that the staff holds.

Also you both recognize that the cleric cast a silence spell on the challenger. You realize that the creature must be pretty powerful because it was able to shape the spell to just effect the challenger.

after the magical display the Grimlocks all shuffle towards the squat stone huts. many look as if they are retiring for the day.

The Grimlock priest moves towards the party. "Big magic over, you sleep now. area keep bones away. me make sure of that. no touch sparkly runes till they fade."

Crowblaze, Sparkle and Seryl. I rolled Knowledge arcana rolls. you can all tell that he cast a warding spell on the village to keep undead out. you thing from the display of magic that it should keep the lich out as well. for a time anyways.

The night passese quickly with nothing out of the ordinary occuring. the next morning several grimlocks move towards the party cautiously. they carry several stone slabs that appear to be covered with an variety of mosses, and fish. "you now eat. Dis'sna cook you for." one says in rough common. the scrawny creature gestures towards a tiny hunched form, working over a small fire. the party assumes that most grimlocks never need light due to their massive pupils. but that they mus be preparing food for you the way they assume humans of the surface eat.

Gabriel accepts the food in kind. "Thank you and tell your cook there that it will help strengthen our bodies for the task at hand." Gabriel then eats some of the morsels and just looks up to the stairway leading up to where the lich is already probably planning to retaliate.

Mursharr rises in the morning, he turns his head to check the food and even takes a small portion out of respect to the Grimlocks that prepared it. He quickly downs the morsel he took, then turning his attention to the stairs that they have not yet used for a few moments before recalling something the cleric mentioned.

Mursharr finds the cleric/chieftain and gives a bow to the leader of the Grimlocks, figuring it wouldn't hurt to show approval of a leader that aided them. "Chief say he see home of magic bones. How far, how long travel?" he asks the new chieftain.
