For somebody who hasn't read any SW novels since the early 90's, which ones would you recommend? Which are essential reads to know what is going on in the universe?

Well as a fan of the EU I recommend reading all the novels but to acquaint yourself with the universe then reading.

The Black Fleet Crisis, the Corelia Trilogy, The New Jedi Order series, and the Legacy of the force books. Thats like 30 books there but you could skip a couple of the New Jedi Series but be careful which you do because it will confound you to no end if you skip the wrong one.

I've read maybe 5 SW novels. I prefer to get all of my EU from the comics and RPG books and other sources.

If you want to be caught up with the current continuity then the Legacy comics are the place to start. Not to be confused with the Legacy novel series.

I would also recommend the Dark Times series of comics. They are covering the time between Episode III and IV.

Both are great stories.

The Thrawn trilogy is, and will always be, one of my favorite series of books, and it definitely sets a lot of the tone for some of the novels.

I would of course recommend the Jedi Academy series with Thrawn and the duology with Thrawn but he said that he hasn't read since the early 90's and so I assumed that he read the trilogy already.

I also recommend the Legacy comics, but you might not understand them if you have not read any of the New Jedi Order since Legacy is written by the same authors and build on those books.

I don't like the Thrawn trilogy. Basically, I recommend the Han Solo stuff and Shatterpoint, and that's about it, strictly on their literary merit.

Literary merit?

That's it.......I'm calling the Star Wars Kid to come and give you a lesson in literary merit.

I understand he wields a dual broomstick!

Shatterpoint is a bit of a kicker for me, in that it does provide a huge amount of background info and character development, but also offers some of the more brutal retconning as far as the accepted physics of Star Wars goes: I.e: Hypeing through a planet.

So thats where that idea came from!

I always wondered this. Now I'll have to make rules for it for the RPG.

Just remember that the Republic Commando books are the best!

Kote!

Kelbin might be a little bias in favour of the Republic Commandos.
