I was reading a clip from an article about online games, and the writer appeared very excited about putting a team together. This is an imaginary team with real world influences. It got me to thinking about some of the modern rpg stuff out there.

Would/should Fantasy Football be considered roleplaying?

I would say no, as it would be more akin to a Stragey game at best or gambling at worst.

The only role you fill is in the picking and choosing who is on your team.

Does anyone remember Blood Bowl? It was a football type game where your teams of goblins, orcs, and such could kill players on other teams and other similar things. I think it was put out by TSR. That's my idea of fantasy football.

Some of the old Runequest material (I believe) had Troll Ball, where the "ball" was a live Trollkin. (Trollkin are degenerate trolls, puny, weak, and despised by real trolls.) Like football/rugby the object was to get the trollkin across the field; points off if it was dead, or if parts were missing.

Now that's a man's sport. Well, a troll's sport.

Mutant League Football, was originally on the SNES if I recall correctly. Don't recall who put it out, but all the controls were the same as Temco's football game.

I'd say it's definitely gaming, but not really roleplaying. People are putting themselves into the environment, not acting out a role. It's the "Mary-Sue" sort of thing.
