Typhon
Monday 08-06-2007, 12:49 PM
I cast bull's strength on Typhon.
Wait until I need it, like when the dragon(s) return. That spell has a limited time duration. Dragons have good armor and like breathe fire from beyond the reach of a sword. I'll need to be able to pump it full of arrows that have some real punch.

Suddenly when Moadin hears the word Dragon, a brow raises. Then after the many words exchanged about how the dragon may be running from the party along with pumping it full of arrows, Moadin lets out a slight 'humph' followed by a slight chuckle.

What color was that dragon? I hope it wasn't a red fire breathing one.
It sounds like the orc and the dwarf are experienced dragon slayers, that's good. Anyone else here ever fight a dragon? No offense Sorrel, I'm referring to the evil kind.

Suddenly when Moadin hears the word Dragon, a brow raises. Then after the many words exchanged about how the dragon may be running from the party along with pumping it full of arrows, Moadin lets out a slight 'humph' followed by a slight chuckle.
There are four kinds of people who have fought dragons...
- Those who have fought and won, as I have.
- Those who have fought and are now dead.
- Those who have not fought and ran away.
- Those who can only talk about fighting a dragon.
Which are you?
I've served with many a dwarf before, and they were very good at killing whatever they could hit. Unfortunately speed and reach were never there strong points. Do you carry any ranged weapons? I doubt this dragon would stand and fight us hand to claw on the ground. They never do, they toast you from out of reach.
What color was that dragon? I hope it wasn't a red fire breathing one.
Ha!!!
Sorry your excellence, it was as red as red gets.

Turning toward the voice of 'reason' that is called Typhon, Moadin shakes his head slightly and says, "Fifth. Never met, fought, nor wanted to fight a dragon. They're not beasts to be messed with less you've got an army or the strength of one. Even if this dragon of yours is a youngling, he's still got the means to bite off yer head and use it as a Pelo ball. I don't fancy running into a dragon, not least till I'm a little more seasoned."

I was much younger and less experienced back then. 30 of us saw a young red dragon and we let loose a barrage of arrows. I don't think any of us hit it, or at least stuck an arrow into it. That pissed off the dragon, so it kept flying over us and toasting us with its breath. It killed more than half the party before it made the mistake of flying too low. We had a druid with us who entangled it in a tree, and we eventually brought it onto the ground where we could pummel it to death with our weapons. Out of 30 mercenaries, only 4 of us survived. But we ate well that night!
Now here's the difference.... we have a stronger group than I did back then, and I have arrows that can penetrate its thick hide. Plus we have more magic too. I'm not saying that I want to hunt that dragon to fight it, just that we shouldn't panic should it return.

Having spotted the Red Dragon, most likely on her way back, Adara keeps in close to the group, and kaughs to the other Raves, who quickly scatter, keeping low. They know a predator when they see one.
Adara will land quickly and for as short a time as possible on Sem's shoulder, to give the information about the Fireball, and her supposition that it was the Dragon who did it, and wants to keep people away from that mountain ridge. And maybe they shouldn't think about going in that direction any time soon....
She's feeling nervy, what with something more dangerous than an Eagle hovering overhead.

Hearing about the siting of a red dragon, I try to recall what I know about those foul creatures...

Realizing that the Fireballs that I've been relying on won't work against a red dragon, I go into meditation and change my spells for the day.

Nodding to Typhon's words, Moadin agrees with what he has to say - at least in theory. He intones, "I just don't wanna get caught flat footed or on horseback against that beastie. And I've yet to see just how powerful we are. There are stories of dragons that wipe out entire cities. I'm just hoping it's not one of them."

The ten of you have been traveling for almost six hours this morning, it's getting near time to take your midday rest. The trail has gotten narrower, steeper and rougher, and the mountain that it snakes around is steeper. There are some trees and bushes, and those that are are not very tall. The ground is rocky with cacti, colorful flowers and vines. You spot a small lake up ahead and figure that might be a good place to stop.
Without warning a small landslide starts a few hundred feet above you, and it's wide enough to cover the entire length of your caravan. There are hundreds of rocks rolling toward you, most are from six inches to three feet in diameter. It will be upon you in a couple of seconds, so spell casting or running away is not possible. The slope is about 2:1.
Sorrel: Would it be a safe assumption that you put up your Toughness aura (30 ft radius) as an instant action?

Kaughing, the Other Ravens fly up the mountain, to harass the big uglies, diving for their faces, but never quite reaching, and making lots of noise (you can decide what they need for a DC save to not get hit, I trust you, DM.)
Suddenly, the earth beneath the nearest three of the big uglies starts falling down the hill, along with the landslide (Soften Earth and Stone-under their feet, along with part of the hill they were thworing at us.) I watch as 3 of them come sliding down towards my group for a split second while I consider my next move.

The group is able to finish off the Giants with little trouble. Adara heals Vi with a Cure Serious Wounds spell (everyone is healed, right?). Tronja makes it to the mountain side where you just killed the four Hill Giants. In searching the bodies you find that each is carrying a bag full of silver, as they just raided a silver mine. They had a total of 480 pounds of silver, equal to 24,000 silver pieces. One Giant had a six inch brass key (not magic). They were armed with clubs and rocks, and wore crude furs.

They're quite dead. The bodies are a bit burned, and they have a few slashing wounds as from a sword.
Adara is flying ahead, Ghezryln is riding, the other eight are walking. Moadin the dwarf is the slowest walker.
Once the party arrives they see a 150 foot high waterfall which is 12 feet wide. Over the years it had formed a tiny (100 foot diameter) lake that is very deep. Around the lake is a slab or rock that extends out 50 feet in all directions. Beyond that is brush and some small trees. The trail passes by the lake, but you'd have to cross a 20 foot wide stream that's two feet deep at the most. The two dead bodies are on your side of the lake and stream, about ten feet from the lake.

Tronja has a couple of seconds on Sorrel and Ghezryln, the benefit of a 60 pound anchor, and a current pulling her along. Those advantages are too much to overcome in getting to the bottom quickly. By the time Ghezryln, Sorrel and later Kadion arrive at the bottom of the lake (pool is a better description) she had been swept into the side tunnel by a current. The newcomer takes in all that occurs and figures out that they were not just simply go for a swim like it appeared, but having no way to help with an underwater adventure, he concentrates on the party members that remained dry. As Vi begins speaking to him, he takes that as permission to further approach the group. As he does, more detail can be seen about the individual.
The individual is a human male of just shy of average height, standing only 5’ 5”. His light brown hair is pulled back to keep it out of the way, which only shows off his brilliant green eyes even more. However, what he may lack in height he makes up for with solid muscle definition. He wears a well crafted chain shirt that appears to be quite light, yet apparently quite sturdy. His left hand holds a large metal shield with a trio of spikes protruding from it, although right now the shield is held down - just being carried. All in all, he seems looks like one might picture a traditional well trained fighter – until one happens to notice what he wears on his hips. Instead of the standard blade or axe or such weapon, Roh carries a pair of whips. To his left is a fairly standard whip, but it is the one on his right that catches most eyes - this whip has barbs running down the length of it and what appears to be a dagger blade at the tip. He walks at a relaxed pace currently, exuding a nonthreatening manner as he approaches.
"Vedui' Vimachipal (Greetings, in elvish). My name is Roh, unfortunately I too have been traveling some distance and only arrived at this lake shortly before you and your companions; so I know nothing of this area. In fact, it would seem you already know more about it than I do, since you mentioned some underground cavern. I can leave you alone while you work on rescuing your companion, for my question is not as important as your companion's immediate situation, if you would prefer." For his part, Roh does appear to be a little embarrassed that he so completely misunderstood the initial situation.

From what I read Draconic Adaption gives you Water Breathing and the ability to talk or use any magical abilities while underwater. It does not give you Freedom of Action (Cleric/Bard spell, level 4). [PHB-2, page 13]
The swim DC=10, which is easy. I'll give you full base walk, but not run without the Freedom of Action spell. You can put your boots on for more speed.
It's pitch black once you go a few feet into the tunnel, you stumble on the rough floor and have to use your hands to follow the sides of the tunnel.

Once Ghezryln arrives with the Daylight rock from Adara you can swim along. Ghezryln swims a bit quicker than you (50/2=25 > 30/2=15). The light reaches 60 feet ahead of Ghezryln and you see Sorrel at that distance. Once Sorrel gets the light he moves at the same pace as Ghezryln but 60 feet ahead. He can move faster in the light, but can't make that speed in the darkness.

If nobody takes me up on the offer I cast Detect Evil (L1), look at the two dead bodies, the new guy Roh with the whips, then into the water.
You detect a very weak but lingering aura of evil on the dead Giants (they were evil) and around them (they were killed by evil).
Roh is not evil.
You detect a lingering aura of evil slightly stronger than that was on the Giants. Judging by its shape and location you guess that there was a Water Elemental there recently, which would explain the current that is no longer there.
Spoiler: Tronja jumped with a 60 pound anchor and quickly sunk to the bottom, then was swept away by a waiting Water Elemental. That's all for now, there are still many questions. With her head start and help from the Elemental, Sorrel would not have caught her in the water even if he had Freedom of Movement.

Hey Big guy, this is a little to heavy for me, do you think you can carry this (gesturing to the large Bag of Holding.)

Hmmm... I don't believe the "Big Guy" ever accepted the bag. In fact I believe we were set up by a lousy thief who was playing us for fools. I don't think she commit suicide and drown herself. Judging by the wounds on those giants I'd say that those desert riders are nearby and helped Tronja escape. Vi: You're tracking the location of the Bag of Holding. As soon as it gets 200 feet inside the mountain (west), it starts moving north which is parallel to the trail in the direction you want to go. Your Message spell no longer can reach your three associates inside the caves under the water.
Sorrel, Ghezryln and Kadion: You follow the tunnel upward a couple hundred feet and it ends inside a subterranean pool. The pool is by the side of an underground passage that resembles a road with a flat surface, 15 feet wide by 10 feet high. You hear the sound of horses running echoing inside the tunnel, and see horse tracks and wet footprints leading out of the pool. Ghezryln's light illuminates the tunnel, it is very old and the walls are full of art work.
Semaria (and whomever else): You head toward the side of the mountain to start looking for caves. You see a humanoid near where Roh came out of hiding, and it starts running to the north.

Roh stops in his tracks at Vi's questions and turns back to her. He wanted to go find his new companion, but he also didn't want to leave this group with such accusations in their mind either. Hopefully he will be ok for a little while, Roh thinks.
"Lady Vimachipal, I have told you the pure truth. I only just arrived at this place recently, with a companion in tow, so I have no idea what killed those giants over there, much less whoever this Tronja is. Although it may seem I was hiding my little friend, it was he who was hiding out of a general fear. I found him this morning along the road, almost dead. After healing him with the one potion I still had, he told me how he had been separated from his companion and was being hunted by a group of Shar worshipers and others hired by them. As he was still weak and needed aid, I agreed to aid him in trying to find his lost companion, as Helm would have of me. For that reason I approached your group, to see if you had seen any solitary adventurers recently. However, something happened to spook the halfling and thus he ran. I only hope that he does not meet any harm whilst I explain this to you. If you wish, use your truth spells, for one who worships Torm (since he noticed Jannys' outfit) will know that I am speak only the truth. And if others try to 'help' me to remember as you put it, they will have a tough time I guarantee." Even at this though, Roh breathes a calming breath and does not even raise his shield in defense, hoping that it would not come to that and he would not have to hurt anyone today.

Who and where is this halfling? You as a follower of Helm must recognize priestesses of Torm and Selune as friendly and opponents of those who follow Shar. In fact we are hunting an elf and a halfling who as agents of Shar are thieves and assassins. They are the only agents of Shar we have seen, other than two desert riders known as Amalites.

The assassin that jumped into the water. The Amalites call her their "Trojan Horse", they use her as their infiltrator because she lies so easily and so well. There is no more disgusting creature in this region than that fiend, except perhaps her four companions.
The Black Trident is an evil artifact of unspeakable power. Ages ago the Travelers Aid Society captured it and we kept it hidden away to protect the world from it. Two weeks ago the Amalites broke into our fortress, which the Selunite Temple was an extention of, and stole the Trident.
Thate trident once belonged to Amal Shoon himself, who was the last Emperor of the Shoon Dynasty a millenium ago. There are five followers of Shar who trace their lineage back to Amal Shoon, and they seek to recreate the old empire under the rulership of Shar. Those five are:
- Yanjidijian "Daemon Yang", who is a priest of Shar and their leader.
- Trolvius "Shar Trap" who is a master of disguise, deception and traps.
- Kamiel "Trojan Horse", who is their infiltrator and lies like a devil.
- Justicar Melias, who is their enforcer.
- Ikrom "Eye of Shar" who is an evil arcane spell caster.
Cyrus, Ziggy and I are members of the TAS, and we're trying to find the map and prevent the Amalites from finding the lost city of Monrativi Teshy Mir and the book of great power called the Tome of the Unicorn. That trident knows where it is. Three members or TAS were killed dyring the attack on our fortress.
We learned that the Amalites lost the trident when they tried to find the city, so Cyrus, Ziggy and I set out to try to recover it. That's when I noticed the Amalites put out a call to hire some mercenaries to help them recover it. I stopped by to se who was responding, and that group is you. As you saw they killed Cyrus after we tried to prevent you from crossing the river. The fireballs were not aimed at your group, just Kamiel. The ferry (that we built) was sent down the river to prevent your crossing, hoping you'd go back home.
Ziggy and I escaped, but the Amalites were in hot persuit. They left some chumps behind to slow you down. Earlier today they caught up with us, and Ziggy and I were separated. Here, I have a map to Monrativi Teshy Mir.

Then why did Gofling Halfpints shoot an arrow at me back at the river? I never heard of this Travelers Aid Society before I answered Rashpart's call for adventurers. To me this whole mess sounds like two rivals at war with each other, and now we were dragged into it. Both sides are going to say that they're right and try to demonize the other. I really don't care. I want my gold. And I'm going to take the head off anyone who stands in my way be it Cyrus, Ziggy, Halfpints, Tronja, or anyone else.

Good idea, lets move. We lost these guys before, lets not lose them again.
Stinky... can you describe the five?

Sir Moadin, would you object to riding on the horse?
Your heavy armor on short legs doesn't make for good speed on foot.

Yes.
Now you need to find the spot in the mountains that corresponds to that big black X.

Moadin drools a little as he contemplates shiny things, gemstones, jewels, and precious rocks. After wiping his face, standing on his toes a little higher, he tries to get a better look and almost stumbles into the nearest person to him while losing his balance. The loss of balance was perhaps due to the thoughts of riding a horse again, and he grumbles to answer, "No objections, but they're so ... unstable and high off the ground."

The Amalites call her their "Trojan Horse", they use her as their infiltrator because she lies so easily and so well.
Tronja Resho = Trojan Horse
Trolvius "Shar Trap" who is a master of disguise, deception and traps.
Rashpart = Shar Trap
Harsprat = Shar Trap
Could it be that we met Trolvius at the warehouse and didn't know it?
I never met nor heard of any Captain Rashpart before, and those two militia men at the river just met Commander Harsprat.

Please slow down for a moment and consider what has happened so far, and what you're rushing off to do without thought. We have two maps in our possession, each presumably drawn by by the wielder of the evil trident. Both lead to the identical place. Now that the Amalites have that trident, we know exactly where they are going. Kamiel (Tronja) knows that we have a map, so they know that we will be following them. Past history has tells us they will look for a strategic place to prepare another ambush.
I would rather camp here for the day, investigate the surroundings, learn what we can from the dead giants, and get to know the newcomers to our group a bit better. If we travel stealthily at night with forward sentries we can prevent the ambush.
And I have some good and bad news for the group. First the good news. Our mission is no longer time sensitive. There is no secret burial chamber to rush to. Trolvius (Rashpart) set us up to be in a rush, hoping we would catch Cyrus and Ziggy, then kill them without asking questions. But they did not expect the trident or another map to show up, or our group to grow. They're still hoping we're going to rush right into another trap.
The bad news, and I'm sorry to break this to you Typhon, is that there is no reward waiting for us back in Almraiven. The Amalites did not want us to look at the map, or go inside the burial chamber. They want what's inside. That is where we will find our reward.

"Go ahead you should be able to be back following us. I don't want to lose the trail again. Also who's crazy idea was it to got through the mountains instead of following the last set of tracks we had. I think that person set us up for this attack on the mountain and the get away by water. Pass this on to the others. Get going so you can find us quickly."
You follow the horse tracks which keep to the trail. Other trails branch off, but you've left good markers. After an hour you're wondering if and when the others will catch up with you, and how far ahead the five riders got.
Then you hear a loud STOP!
You wonder where it came from, but see nobody around. You've been part of enough Message spells to realize that's what it was. But you don't recognize the voice. You search around, then up ahead and off the trail you spot a desert rider on a horse. He's carrying a black trident and talking to a some others. It's not rocket science to figure out that they're planning an ambush.

Vi is right, they'd probably split us in half where one half couldn't help the ambushed half out. But we're stronger now, and we're not traveling with two wagons, or even by horse. A big problem is that Trolvius is a master of traps, so we're in danger no matter how sneaky we are. Too bad we can't all fly. We need to ask these two dead giants some questions. Maybe those four dead giants we just killed too.
Jannys, how about if I question one giant and you question the other giant? Then if we need to we can go back and question the others. As an open question to the group, do you have any suggestions for questions?

I'm going to cast Speak With Dead on the giants, one at a time. But before I do I'd like to get some suggestions from the group. Some ideas are...
How long have you been dead?
Who killed you?
What killed you?
Why were you killed?
I suggested these questions before that thing jumped into the water. I can only ask three questions of a dead body, so I'd go with...
1) Who killed you?
2) What killed you?
3) Why were you killed?
If we need more details, Jannys can question the other giant.

I've seen their kind before, they're looking for something in the mountains. All four had sand colored cloaks with hoods. Two carried swords, two carried staves. They were also looking for an elf and a halfling.

You have no problem following the five sets of tracks.
Your move speed (20 ft/rd) on this trail is 2/3 base. How long will you follow if your associates don't catch up with you?
Kadion: Did you return with Ghezryln, or are you helping Sorrel?
I will keep going for hours if need be. Marking the trail and hiding and sneaking if I get close to them.

Roh nods in agreement to the recent plan. "Even though I don't know what your two other companions are capable of, I would think it best to get to them and not leave them alone. I have quite a bit of experience riding, if no one else needs the horse. Once we get everyone together, then we should probably rest up and prepare ourselves."
As he finishes, one of the ravens lands on his right shoulder (since it wasn't declared who got them. ;)). He glances at the bird and notices the other ravens doing the same. "This should be an interesting trip," he mutters.
