Ok, there's a series of books written by E.E. Smith (as seen in the above link). I'm only in chapter two of book one, and I have to say, the writing style is so concise and amazing, that I'm already hooked. This is probably the best space-opera that I've ever come across and recommend everyone out there who likes sci-fi to read it.

From what I'm told, there is also a Lensmen anime that's worth checking out.
