I'm on the staff of a new magazine dedicated to old-school D&D called & (And). Here's a blurb with info and the web site, where you can download a free copy:

A new magazine dedicated to old-school Dungeons & Dragons has arrived!
Entitled &, the quarterly publication focuses on 1st edition AD&D and
features fan-driven content such as fiction, editorials, rules variants,
adventure maps, original adventures, and a variety of game aids such as new
monsters, spells, and character classes. Each issue will focus on a particular theme.
The first issue, whose theme is low-level adventuring, is available as a free PDF at the magazine's website:
http://www.and-mag.com/ . The second issue is due out in early August.

The magazine is currently seeking manuscript submissions, so if you would
like to submit an article, click on the "Submissions" tab on the website for
further details.

Any chance that this would expand to include AD&D second edition also?

Any chance that this would expand to include AD&D second edition also?

We aren't against publishing material for 2E or other non-1E editions of the game, and those versions may be represented on occasion. The primary thrust is 1E, though.

This looks fun. Have you posted over at knights-n-knaves dot com? One of my friends was involved in the creation of OSRIC (which reminds me I have to get to work on the cover image for that product he is launching). In any case, good luck with the mag.

Lost ships.

Missing crews.

Disappearing cargo.

3889

The King is not pleased, and it's your job to find out what happened and bring a stop to it! To do so you'll have to unravel a mystery that's stumped the king's advisors. There are minimal clues: one ship that made it back with a stabbing spear of unusual design and some odd blood on the deck. Be warned though, the rough and tumble sailors in a bar and even a sea monster or two aren't nearly as deadly as the answer to this riddle.

&2: Rage from the Waves is the first non-collaborative adventure published by the & Publishing Group.

Four to eight characters of 4th to 7th level will figure out the mystery, including who can tell them what they need to know, and rescuing the survivors before it's too late. The adventure includes two completely detailed businesses, a full set of deck plans for a carrack, a second set of partial plans providing design variations, and an island with room for additional adventuring if you so desire. Add to this over 80 fully documented characters for use in this and other adventures, including several ship's crews, and you have an adventure that is also a resource. The adventure pulls from multiple sources ranging from our own magazine issues to articles from The Dragon, to provide a setting steeped in the varied and dynamic resources of the OSR.

So visit http://www.and-mag.com (http://www.and-mag.com/) today and download it for free! And while you're there, go ahead and download &1: The Valley of Eternal Rest and our first four issues if you don't already have them, all free and available now.

& Magazine Issue 5 Now Available!

The & Publishing Group announces their fifth issue, an issue focused on magic items and their creation. Give your magic-users and druids staves as foci of their magic, let your clerics create magic items that grow with the character’s level, discover ways to manage magic-user apprentices and assistants, and feast your eyes on large numbers of magic items, including more new magic items from Len Lakofta, along with other articles and our regular columns.

http://www.and-mag.com/download/and-mag-i05-thumb.jpg

There’s also adventures, creatures, foes, maps, and other useful materials we feel you’d enjoy, along with the usual things you’ve come to expect from &, so download it today and feast your eyes on 92 pages of new material for your OSR game!

But wait, there’s more. Magic items are such a big topic that we had too much to squeeze into one issue, so we’ve moved some of it into its own supplement, &5002: Mundane Magica. This 36 page supplement gives you a new table of non-violent magic items generated from submissions from readers and folks on different forums and newsgroups, additional information for the original 100 item list from The Dragon #73, and a full table of stealth weapons and armor. Add that to the magazine and you’ve got 128 pages of magic item goodness to use in your game.

Hey PnPers!!

BtB folk need not apply ;) , & Magazine is starting a new regular feature called "House Rules" exploring the modifications various AD&D 1st edition groups make to the rules to make them more fun for them. Through this we hope to expose the community to alternative points of view on what the rules are and mean, and perhaps give you some ideas to incorporate in your campaign.

We cannot do this without your help though, so we are looking for submissions from the community. If you are interested in being featured please send a copy of your house rules and a brief write up on your group (IE played together since - usually play at - seeking members / or not - and other info you deem pertinent) to submissions@and-mag.com .

Thank you for reading and thanks for any help!

What is this monster???
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk104/rgredmond/JohnF-harpoonopus_zpsa12d09b5.png
An & editor saw and really liked a picture the artist, John Fredericks, drew and posted on his web site. When asked if we could use it for & Magazine, John indicated it was an iconic monster from Star Frontiers and he was concerned there would be a trademark violation if we used it.
Fair enough.
The & Publishing Group strives to observe both the letter and the spirit of the law, so we switched to Plan B. What is Plan B you ask?
The picture above is Plan B. John drew this, not the same as, but inspired by his original drawing. He calls it the harpoonapus. Is it a malevolent intelligence? Is it a benign animal?
Is it an organic dust mop? What is it???
THAT is the question we ask of our dear supporters – what is this thing?
YOU decide what this creature is. Good, evil, in between? Huge (10' across), tiny (3"), or in between?
Intelligent or non-intelligent? Is it from the Prime Material Plane? Is it from an Alternate Prime Material Plane? Is it from an elemental plane, or from an outer plane?
Tell us what you think!
Name the monster and provide its statistics and a basic description (one to two pages). Send your result to submissions@and-mag.com
The staff will vote for their favorite, and we will publish the favorite two or three in a future issue of & Magazine!
Many thanks to our fine readers, and we hope you find this enjoyable!
Be well and happy gaming,
Ron

& Magazine news:

Issue 8 is due to come out this Saturday, February 15th no matter rain, nor sleet, nor even more snow!
The focus of this issue is Urban Adventures!
What could be more urban than druids trekking around in town, or monster hirelings… someone’s gotta do the dirty work. But then again, the name of the game is Dungeons & Dragons; nothing can do more damage in town than a dragon. Here’s Del Teigeler’s awesome rendition of a dragon visiting a town near you. Enjoy and read & Magazine! Thank you.

The first segment of the Castle Triskelion Mega-Dungeon has published!

The Castle Triskelion is a sprawling multi-level castle/dungeon that has numerous levels above and below ground! This free supplement for Old School role-playing games is being published in segments. The first two segments are the Introduction and the Ground Level. Click either image to navigate to the & Magazine web site:

http://and-mag.com/web-images/triskelion-introduction-thumb.jpg (http://www.and-mag.com/2014/05/castle-triskelion-introduction-ground-level/) . . . . . http://and-mag.com/web-images/triskelion-ground-level-thumb.jpg (http://www.and-mag.com/2014/05/castle-triskelion-introduction-ground-level/)

The Introduction provides background on the Castle, including new monsters and items.

The Ground Level is the first module in this exciting series — it details the ground level (1st floor) of the Castle in 20 stimulating pages. This first segment is designed for low level adventurers. As with all mega-dungeons, the level of future segments will ramp up along side of the character’s level.

Stay tuned for more segments!

The Castle Triskelion mega-dungeon is written by Tim Stypinski, and is published through the & Publishing Group (http://and-mag.com/) web site.

& Magazine Issue 10 Is On It’s Way!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk104/rgredmond/Issue10Ad02_zps0f146961.png
Art by & Magazine artist Chris Letzelter

It’s August, and that means that & Publishing Group is putting the finishing touches on its tenth issue, an issue focused on the Shape Changers. How’s a shape changer to survive in a world where ‘solids’ are always looking to kill you? Len Lakofka explores whatever happens to the clothes and possessions of those who shapeshift, polymorph and the like. And Issue 10 would not be complete without an analysis of the etiology of lycanthropy. Andrew Hamilton continues his exploration of the Otherworld; a fairie realm inspired in part by John “Gnarley Bones” Turcotte’s Red Tam’s Bones modules. As well as an intriguing NWP for “Monster Lore” by Vince Lethal – to handle some of those metagaming difficulties when your players have memorized the Monster Manual.

There’s also adventures, creatures, foes, maps, and other useful materials we feel you’d enjoy, along with the usual things you’ve come to expect from & Magazine. As well as more on missile fire from Len Lakofka, more spell lists from Tim Moore, text-based gaming by Thomas W. Thornberry, and magic items and spells from Stuart Marshall with that OSRIC flavor of course. Tim Connolly continues a favorite from last issue, his BrewMaster column, this issue’s topic - “For Crits and Giggles”. As well as much, much more from all our fantastic regular authors, artists, and cartographers that our readers come to expect!
